I was just wondering what everyone's rarest scores are...maybe we can all learn titles we didn't know existed. (I'm more interested in legitmate releases).

    A few I've got are:

    Marie de Nazareth (Oliver Lliboutry)
    Dolores Claiborne (Elfman's expanded version)
    The Dreamstone (Mike Batt)

Any other information would be great!

Perhaps the rarest (legit) score I own:

    George Bruns' 101 DALMATIANS

You see, a couple years back, when the film was being released on video, the soundtrack came with the tape. Somehow, a copy of the CD wound up on Yahoo Auctions, I bid on it, and, well, one thing led to another...

Would that Disney did the same with "The Sword in the Stone"...

    Also quite rare:

A Man of No Importance (Julian Nott + songs)
A Fish Called Wanda (John DuPrez)

I think one of my rarest CDs could be THE 'BURBS with authentic Jerry Goldsmith signature on the cover, and another (failed attempt to sign it) inside - really.

I also have A FISH CALLED WANDA, which is slightly longer than the Milan issue.

WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT I found online for the eqivalent of about $8, in pristine condition.

The rarest CD I have is probably the orchestral score by Edmund Butt to REVELATION, a new British religious/horror/thriller which as far as I know hasn't been released yet (certainly not in the UK). I saw the film (stars Terence Stamp, Udo Kier) at a festival in August and advance promotional CDRs of the score were being sold in the cinema; I got mine signed by the film's writer-director, Stuart Urban.

NP: MUSIC FROM STEVEN SEAGAL FILMS (David Michael Frank) - not rare at all.

Well I don't know how "rare" they are but I know people pay big bucks for these on eBay.

    Tai-Pan - Maurice Jarre
Apollo 13 Academy Promo - James Horner
    Toy Soldiers - Robert Folk
    Lionheart - John Scott
    Shogun Mayeda - John Scott
Firestorm (original composer promo) J. Peter Robinson
Legend of Drunken Master USA version (autographed composer promo) Michael Wandmacher)

maybe theres more, but I can't think of them.

I suppose we're talking about original CDs here, not about CDRs, right?

    • Spaceballs (John Morris, but only 7 minutes, the rest are songs)
    • Lionheart (Jerry Goldsmith) - Japanese Varese release, 19 tracks on 1 CD

Wanda is rare? I have that one too (the Milan), wonderful score.

But seriously...the titles come to mind that I have originals of which were official releases:

o Mio in the Land of Faraway (Anders Eljas) - CBS Holland
o The Snow Queen (Jukka Linkola) - Finlandia Records
o The Blob (Michael Hoenig) - Filmtrax
o Flowers in the Attic (Chris Young) - Intrada (I don't know if this is rare or just that no one wants to give up their original)
o The Concert Suites 4CD set (Bernard Herrmann) - Masters Film Music
o Space Camp (John Williams) - SLC Japan
o Creepshow (John Harrison) - SLC Japan
o Assassin(s) (Carter Burwell) - Milan (seems to be difficult to find these days)
o Shipwrecked (Patrick Doyle) - Disney
o The Rescuers Down Under (Broughton) - Disney
o just about all of the Fanderson limited edition releases from the UK
o Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3-D (Harry Manfredini) - Milan; actually contains music from the first 3 flicks

    ...and these promos (manufactured CD):

o Buffy the Vampire Slayer:Music from the Second Season (Christophe Beck)
o From Rumblefish to Gridlock'd (Stewart Copeland)
o Film Music by Marco Beltrami (thanks Shaun! )
o Selected Suites 2CD set (Robert Folk) - Intrada promo
    o Hocus Pocus (John Debney)

I used to have an original of The Serpent and the Rainbow, but when I was offered over $300 for it, I gladly parted with it.

Some others that were considered rare at one time are the Goldsmith Dinner Tribute which mysteriously seems to have had MANY more copies pressed than what was originally thought; Cherry 2000 and Flesh + Blood, both decreased in perceived value due to the combined bootleg which was also a pressed CD, not to mention the overrun that Varese did on Cherry 2000 which weren't numbered; Witches of Eastwick, also a victim of the pressed bootleg made from the DVD's isolated score.

I'm sure there are more, but people might think I was bragging or something (cough, cough) so I'll stop there.

There's one I'd like to find and I'm almost convinced it was never released on CD: BAD DREAMS by Jay Ferguson. I've never ever seen an original of this, but it was supposedly released on CD by Varese. I only have the LP of it. A few people have claimed to have it on CD, only to find it was nothing more than an LP transfer.

Finally, I've said it before but it's worth repeating: CD-Rs do not qualify as being RARE. Granted, the score may have only ever been made available that way such as composer or Academy promos, but to say that you have a "rare CD-R" just makes no sense. Not widely distributed? Sure. But "rare" - no. All you have to do is make another copy and it's that less rare. Original CDs qualify as being rare due to the fact that if you make a CD-R of it, it doesn't change the fact that there were only 'x' amount of CD ever pressed when they were made.

Uhm, I guess my rarest scores are...

    The Spanish Prisoner (Burwell)
    Speed 2: Cruise Control (Mancina)
    The Family Man (Elfman)
    The Jackal (Burwell)
A View to a Kill (Barry)
Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom (Williams) (Maybe this one isn't that rare anymore)

Apparently JFK is out of print, so if that's classed as 'rare', I have that too.
I didn't know Judge Dredd was rare though, unless this is a score only version we're talking about.
I also have a promo copy of Being John Malkovich by Burwell. The content is exactly the same as the CD in the shops (minus the CD Rom extras) except my copy has -FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY- stamped on it and came in a clear plastic cover.
If anyone has Conti's Thomas Crown Affair or Bernstein's Ghostbusters scores and would like to do some trades, Email me A.S.A.P.

Most of the rarities I have are LP's:

The Night of the Hunter - Charles Laughton narrating the story with selections of Walter Schuman's score

Crime in the Streets - Franz Waxman

probably a few others - I haven't checked the book values, so I'm not entirely sure what's 'rare' and what isn't.

not rare in itself, but I do have a dub of a test pressing of Corigliano's REVOLUTION that someone was kind enough to make - now this is a score that SHOULD be made available.

I also have a promo tape of an expanded version of Silvestri's "The Clan of the Cave Bear". Must be extremely rare.
And I hope to receive a Silvestri CD soon that is SO BIZARRE rare I'm afraid to say anything about it and it will make you guys drool! ;-)

I also own the original Body Heat. I'm told that from an investor's point of view this is a bad thing, as its value has dropped to zip all since Varese's re-recording came out.
Other goodies: Davis' Warriors of Virtue (the praises of which I have sung before), Rosza's Golden Voyage of Sindbad and - of course - Lifeforce.
Nearly got my hands once on one of the rarest scores ever, Chris Young's promo for Species (great main theme!), but I let it slip. Stoooopid!

well since only actual cds are rare:

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (got this for 5 bucks) is my rarest cd

I have 3 cds of the Marx Bros scores...soundtrack factory cds. bootlegs I guess. Never seen them anywhere, although they were only 5 bucks.

Is the Rocketeer still rare? It was at one point. Great score.

    kinda rare:
    Dick Tracy score
    Dave
boot of Battle Beyond the stars (not rare anymore)
