I posted a review of the movie under Just Movies-What Have You seen in November. The score for me was just okay. Given the topic and visuals, the movie called for theme and melody. I felt melodic development was sadly lacking and that the music lacked emotional punch. I felt his previous scores were better.

I'm gonna take Joan's word for it (Mom knows what she's talking about), and JJ is right, the guy is hit and miss... though I must say, I recently picked up Isham's Men of Honor, and it's pretty darn good. Formulaic patriotic/suspense stuff, but it's solid and worth listening to.Jeron

I remember seeing the film, as it was this year, and thinking that the opening music was totally Apollo 13.Shaun

Hit & miss????You've gotta be kidding?
I saw "Life As A House" and while Isham wasn't milking the film for every emotion possible (most directors don't want that anyway), I felt he did a very good job scoring the film.
So...let's see...these must be the "Miss" scores you are referring to:
Never Cry Wolf, Mrs. Soffel, A River Runs Through It, Quiz Show, The Moderns, Reversal Of Fortune, Billy Bathgate, Cool World, The Beast, October Sky, Fly Away Home, Kiss The Girls, Browning Version, At First Sight, The Net, The Public Eye, Trouble in Mind, Of Mice & Men, Love At Large and Romeo is Bleeding.
Dude...you gotta be kidding.
Those are ALL great scores and some of them are extremely emotional and fitting to the films they were written for. I don't see how they are "misses".
I love both "A River Runs Through It" and "The Public Eye" and those were both replacement scores.
You're entitled to your opinion...but I think you "missed" the boat on this one.
As for "Men of Honor" sounding like "Apollo 13" did you ever stop to think how many composers are ASKED to follow the temp track? Happens regularly.

Hey James,
You must be new. Welcome.I saw Life As A House last night. Sort of a "nothin'" movie, as my girlfriend likes to say. But hey---they used a Radiohead song! The Isham score was themeless, as usual. Nice, but themeless.
From that list of Isham "miss" scores you printed, it looks like you included damn near everything he's done. Kiss The Girls is bloody awful (I hate "electric cello"; what the hell IS that and how much different is it than a "regular cello?"), At First Sight is as directionless as the film's main character (bam!), The Net is wicked lame, but Of Mice And Men and (especially) The Public Eye are great, great scores. Well, The Public Eye gets two greats. Of Mice & Men earns one. Anyway, I'm siding with JJ (as I am wont to do, as he is always right).
We've been over the temp-tracking thing many, many, manymany times. I wish composers would grow a spine (or two, because that would be freaky!) and just say no.

I must admit, "The Net" is a score I do enjoy.

I've never been a huge fan of Isham, but I recently checked out his Fly Away Home and it's stunning.
