what current/upcoming releases are you looking forward to / planning on buying?

i'm very interested in David Holmes' score for Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven. i loved the music he made for Out of Sight and this new cd looks to have the same mix of score and retro songs as that one.

i'm thinking of getting the cd for Burwell's The Man Who Wasn't There.. anyone who recommends it? sounds to be a nice one anyway, despite there not being much of the Burwell score on it.

then of course there is the case of The Fellowship of the Ring.

    you?

Well....all the really big scores I was looking forward to are already out and I have them.

    The Mummy Returns
    Pearl Harbor
    From Hell
    Harry Potter
    Lord of the Rings

The only other one I'm interested in getting next is Spy Games. Other than that I've been buying a large handful of used/older CDs that I never had a change to get at the time, such as Star Trek TMP which I'm listening too for the first time right now.

I'm trying to buy old stuff before it goes out of print, but I'm failing miserably lately.

I've tried to get the Chapter III Tomorrow Never Dies but an idiot seller at half.com sent me the A&M release instead. *grr*

SuperCollector just totally ignored my order for it, which really pissed me off. Needless to say, I won't be buying from them again for a long, long time.

Jonathan, did you place your order by phone, or submit it online? The SC website is terribly out of date and currently being re-designed (or so I think). I was told that the best way to place an order via SC was by calling directly... that's how I've always done it, and I've never had a problem.

Yeah, not to throw my support to an online retailer other than mm.com, but please do CALL Super Collector. Talk to Mike. He's a White Hat.

The Man Who Wasn't There is a good score. I don't have the CD, but in the film (which is excellent, btw) it was sparse but very effective. I'd guess it's also a good deal if your Beethoven piano sonata collection is scant.

There are a few I'm looking forward to:

The Affair of the Necklace, David Newman - God knows if it'll be released on CD at all.

The Shipping News, Christopher Young - He's still attached to this one, right? This film has Oscar written all over it, so let's keep our fingers crossed for Mr. Young.

Gangs of New York, Elmer Bernstein - Pushed back to Spring, unfortunately.

A Beautiful Mind, James Horner - I'm looking forward to it much more for Charlotte Church than for James Horner, as I don't anticipate anything new from the man. But I'll probably pick up the CD.

The Royal Tenenbaums, Mark Mothersbaugh - I just want to hear how Mothersbaugh scores this one.

Human Nature, Graeme Revell - This sounds so completely different from anything Revell has scored before, I'm very interested to hear it. But this, too, was pushed back to Spring. Grrr...

    FOTR goes without saying.

Burwell's score for The Man Who Wasn't There is good, but there's too much Beethoven on it that we've all heard before a million times.

...and what's wrong with that? You can never have too much Beethoven...

If you liked Burwell's Being John Malkovich and were saddened that the album had to end, then you must pick up The Man Who Wasn't There. After you pick that up, you must go out and buy me the film's poster. Email me for my address, or just ask Danny for it so he can bring the poster along when he comes to "git me."

James, great list! I'm pullin' for Chris Young, but you know that unless a really obscure foreign film wins the award, it's going to Howard Shore.

Well, yeah. I'm crossing my fingers in the hopes that he is nominated, simply because he deserves it already. I anticipate FOTR being my pick for best score of the year. And come to think of it, Shore deserves a nomination already, too.

I bought it online along with Tess... Tess made it here just fine, but I have heard nothing about Tomorrow Never Dies. (I never would have ordered Tess if they didn't have the other disc, since paying $3.50 to ship one CD isn't my favorite way to spend money.) I'll fire off an email tomorrow and see what the deal is.

I understand the Chapter III release is OOP, but since it was still [and continues to be] listed on their website, I assumed they still had copies in stock. I thought it was just common courtesy to email your customers when an item is no longer available before you ship an order.

    *shrug*

Tess is fantastic, by the way.

Indeed - in fact, almost ever score cue on the album has dialogue on it - just like OUT OF SIGHT.

Yep. Especially after he was ignored when Silence of the Lambs swept all the major awards. I guess this will be the 2nd time he's scoring a major Oscar contender. Good luck to him.

I hear that, but thanks to the AFM deal, it may see a release. We need more David Newman CDs.

This is too bad, because from what I've heard, it would've been a sure-fire Oscar contender if it were being released in December.

Probably like "Rushmore". But if Mothersbaugh wrote an orchestral score (he does so few of them, which is a shame since they're so good), that would also be interesting.

i think the strength of The Royal Tenenbaums will probably be the songs though, not the score. have you seen (heard) the trailers?? lots of very damn good music in it.

the Spy Game score sounds a bit.. odd. i heard some samples over at iclassics.com and i wasn't too impressed.

dgoldwas, actually i don't mind. i didn't mind with Out of Sight anyway.. i would've wanted it without the dialogue but now it doesn't really bother me anymore.

Hey, I liked the score for Rushmore!

Hopefully, there will be a non-dialogue version of Ocean's Eleven, like Out Of Sight before it. And hopefully, I'll be able to find it from someone who isn't banned from this board.
