I think I've bought two scores from 2001 films:
  • Along Came the Spider (total crap)
  • Mummy Returns (pretty good)

Elliot Goldenthal's "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" and Toshiyuki Honda's "Metropolis" (from the new anime film in Japan).

I'm just curious. I see that two say they have Lord Of The Rings. So what is it like?
Melodic? Heroic? I'm surprised there isn't a thread discussing this score.

    1. Lord of the Rings (Shore) - easily, and I'm so happy (and relieved) about that
    2. A.I. (Williams)
    3. Final Fantasy (Goldenthal)
    4. Shrek (Gregson-Williams and Powell)
    5. Harry Potter (Williams)

Pretty damn good year for fantasy scores so far. Pretty damn bad year for everything else.

As far as staying power goes, I have to give that award to Shore's The Score. I can't get enough of it.

Of the two Williams scores from this year, I'm siding with Potter, as A.I. seems even more of a pastiche now than it did when I first bought it.

Elfman's Planet Of The Apes score had three things wrong with it:

1.) The film (if you can call that vacuous piece of trash a "film")
    2.) It wasn't Goldsmith.
3.) All that percussion cannot distract me from the fact that there is no theme. And what could be considered a theme is just Sleepy Hollow II.

    Anyway.....

Final Fantasy was a bowel movement with a tremendous orchestral score by Goldenthal.

I believe you know my thoughts on both The Last Castle and Along Came A Spider.

    The Gift was last year.

Shrek was another great score that took two people to write.

The Mummy Returns alternates between "damn cool" and "royally annoying" (the movie itself was the latter). The opening cue kicks ass.

Atlantis is very well recorded. I love track 14, and I believe this is thanks to Joe. Thanks Joel! For some reason, every time I play track 2 around someone, they say, "Hey, that's the theme from The Mighty Ducks."

Maybe it's me, but I don't think there's enough action on the Jurassic Park III album. Like The Mummy Returns, I enjoyed the score MUCH better until I saw the insipid heap that was the film.

I want to hear The Others now that I know Amenabar loves the score to The Changeling. That's just cool.

Fellowship Of The Ring. Howard Shore. I'm there.

OK, I rambled a lot. But, did I say anything useful???????

    Shaun

NP---Radiohead something (again, and much to the chagrin of my girlfriend)

I would have to pick AI as my favorite score this year. I liked The Last Castle , The Mummy Returns, Along Came a Spider and Harry Potter as well. I was disappointed in the score for Tomb Raider. I thought that it would have been more engaging.
