I recently ordered a handful of cds, and am a little bit surprised that they are all gothic horror scores.

    Bram Stoker's Dracula
    Interview with the Vampire
    Jeepers Creepers
    Mary Shelly's Frankenstein

    Any comments on these?

Bram Stoker's Dracula: Very good score, particularly in the movie, but I find the orchestrations a bit thin. For Kilar horror, I prefer The Ninth Gate.
Interview With the Vampire: Good solid Goldenthal, very listenable with several dances. I also rather like the Guns'n'Roses cover of the Stones song at the end of the album.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: The action music gets a bit heavy after some time, but the love theme is one of the best ever written.

Wonderful "GOTH" choices. I have yet to experience JEEPERS CREEPERS, but the rest are all great, especially DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN. These are classics. Wonderful to write to,as well. Poe would've been proud to own these.

Based on the comments I have been hearing, I'll probably pick up JEEPERS CREEPERS myself before too long.

"The Creation," as I say in just about every thread that mentions Doyle, is a master class workout for orchestra.

Bugger what everyone else says here, Kilar's DRACULA kicks serious whupass over all those other scores ya got Tim...it's da business!

The other scores are merely OK, cept for Jeepers Creepers which I haven't heard so can't comment on.

I agree with Timmer about DRACULA. And it's okay to be Goth, y'know...it's in style, after all. Now go out and buy some CROW CDs!

Actually I have both Crow CDs. I like the first one better.

There is a third one, you know. No Goth collection is complete without it!

Yes you're right. I forgot all about Beltrami's version. I'm still mad he didn't stick with Revell's theme.

If you really wanted to be goth, you'd get rid of both of The Crow scores and get as much Kilar as possible. OK, so you wouldn't really be "goth" if you bought a ton of Kilar stuff, but hey---you'd be a lot cooler to a lot of us "elders!"

This seems like as good a place as any to mention that Kilar's Portrait Of A Lady is no longer in print.

Well, I don't think buying them makes you Goth (unless you suddenly run out and buy all black clothes and have a bunch of tattoos added).

I own three of the four listed above as well as recently buying The Omen and Omen 3 and I still dress the same as before.

FYI, the score are pretty good. Kilar, Goldenthal and Doyle have (at least in two of the cases) created the high points of those movies.

    Wothwhile purchases.

(My post is not meant to be a putdown on our Goth friends.)

My views coincide with some of yours! In a nutshell:

DRAC: Great. Almost Rozsa-esque gothic romantic portions!

FRANK: Almost great. Great love theme (hey, Marian, I think you like this!); slightly overbearing and tiresome thunderous action cues.

INTER WITH A V: Good, dense, rewarding listen. Should put this on more often 'cos can't remember.

    JEEPY C: Don't know.

I LOVE INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE!!! (yes, I needed to yell this.) This is one fun score to listen to on CD, and even more exciting in the film. It's such an underrated film and the score seems to be regarded as the least favorite among Goldenthal lovers.

I like it because it's somewhat experimental (all those French horns!) and very different from music of the time. It has more flavor than Alien3, and more orchestration than much of what he did afterwards.

And I'm no Goth, either. I'm just an average guy who likes to listen to kick-ass horror scores.

Jeffy, out of curiosity, if you class Interview with a Vampire score "fun", what do you class the score to Home Alone?

Light, charming, fun. But fun in Home Alone isn't the same kind of fun in Interview.
