This is probably old news to most of you, but I wanted to say that Nick Glennie-Smith is composing music for "We Were Soldiers" http://www.weweresoldiersfilm.com
which is set for a June or July 2002 release.

So far this film is getting great reviews from test audiences claiming that it is Mel Gibson's best film ever. It is also supposedly Paramount's highest rated test screened film ever, beating out their previous screenings for "Forrest Gump" and "Braveheart".

I hope the music lives up to the hype! Anyone know any news or heard anything? I'm anxious to find out more about this film. Thanks.

Hmmm... Randall Wallace using Nick Glennie-Smith? I'm flabbergasted!

Better than Braveheart??? I highly doubt that... I think what you wrote (and read) has been a bit exaggerated... We'll just have to wait and see, I guess...

And, if it is as good as you say, what the hell is Glennie-Smith doing on it? I like the guy, and admittedly it'll be a good break, but I would have chosen several other people before him.

I'm not a big fan of Nick Glennie-Smith's. I don't think I've ever been remotely impressed by anything he's ever done. They should've gotten a REAL composer to do it. I know that's harsh but, hey, it's just my opinion.

Hehe, well I do know that the test screening didn't have any of Nick's scores. It had some temp stuff......maybe the temp stuff made it good

I totally concur with what Steve wrote. Nick Glennie-Smith is probably the least talented to emerge from Media Ventures (though Trevor Rabin is pretty damned bad).

...and Rabin didn't even emerge from Media Ventures... funny how that works.

As someone who is capable of free thought, I have the ability to learn from experience. And in my listening experience, Nick Glennie-Smith sucks ass. Trevor Rabin sucks ass. He sucked ass when he was in Yes (I know he didn't "emerge" from Media Ventures), and he continues this practice today. It's called "breaking new ground." Wake me when someone does it.

Well I think most people aren't dissing on music they haven't heard, but music that they HAVE heard from the composer already... Like I said, I have enjoyed some of his works (Man in the Iron Mask, The Rock, even his bits in Just Visiting and Highlander: Endgame/0, though none of them are what I'd call great. I'm sure I'll enjoy the score, nonetheless... Let's just hope it FITS the film, something his score for Man in the Iron Mask clearly did not.

I actually enjoyed NGS' score in the context of the film. Wasn't too bad, though I did expect Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage to jump out at times. On the album, it's a fun listen...

    Hmmm...

This could go either way. The more contemporary portions of TMITIM (mostly the action sequences) did not fit well into the film, but the more somber, dramatic cues I thought were remarkable and quite fitting. And on album, the more contemporary parts of the music were fine.

That's really the only Glennie-Smith score I've been very impressed by. Though Lion King 2 was not bad at all.

I'll just have to wait and see.

NGS hasn't had the opportunity to write a big score for a big budget movie yet. This is the score where he could proove what he's worth. Let's hope he delivers.

The Rock was a big score for a "big" movie (in terms of production values, actors, budget, just about everything...).

You mean like The Man in the Iron Mask, starring Gerrard Depardieu, Jeremy Irons, Gabriel Byrne, John Malkovich and Leonardo DiCapprio in his first role after Titanic?

I actually do have TMITIM. I like it. I don't love it, but I like it. I remember liking Lion King 2 as well. From what I've heard, he's nowhere close to being a great composer, but he can provide a moderately entertaining underscore.

Don't blame Nick for following the directors' demand in the Iron Mask. If anyone had cared to read the liner note, you'd see that Randall requested that the music be contemporary in part. I'm sure that with a vietnam war plot in the 60s, Randall would want a contemporary score. Probably something akin to SPR or Thin Red Line maybe.

Oh great. Now we'll all have to hear how Nick Glennie-Smith can outbore Team Zimmer's Pearl Harbor.

I still think that the "theme" from Pearl Harbor sounds exactly like "Paris And Bond" from Tomorrow Never Dies.....but that's another rant.

But then we'd have to start talking about Twister and how Mancina WROTE that theme first ...

The Man In The Iron Mask score didn't get a big budget for the score.

NGS wrote a lot for The Rock but evrybody thinks it's a Zimmer score.

Hence, We Were Soldiers will be NGS's first big score.

The only good part of The Rock is the Main Title, which Zimmer did (although, Glennie-Smith must think it was his, as he re-used parts of it in Iron Mask). The rest is noise, noise, noise, and.........noise.
