Wanted to comment on these three recent TV scores. All are very good.

Two by Gordon, Moby Dick and On the Beach.

I have heard two good ones by him now. Both of these scores are really good, orchestral works. On the Beach is a varied score with many good themes. The military music is excellent. The quieter themes are very good. Some of the really loud stuff reminds me a little of Rosenthal's TV musis in the '80s but I like Gordon's style. Moby Dick has a good theme and some excellent action music for the whale battles.

The other score is Animal Farm. This is another good orchestral score with some nice themes and good action music. I don't care for some of the silly vocals but overall its excellent.

Finally, one of my all time favorite TV scores in the '90s is Son of Morning Star by Safan. Really great. Those beautiful trumpets and strings in that long cue are fantastic. What a score!!!!! This is his masterpiece score so far. The Custer TV film wasn't too bad and this score made it better.
There are some very powerful passages in this one. If you have not heard it I highly recommend it to you. John.

On the Beach is nifty. just don't watch teh film though, as you'll wanna kill yourself after it's all done.

Moby Dick hasn't enthralled me as much as I'd expected. A good theme for sure, but I dunno. Hasn't grown on me yet.

    haven't heard Animal Farm.

On the Beach is very good. Moby Dick is a masterpiece from beginning to end.

Haven't heard the third one either.

After hearing Moby and Beach, I swear by Gordon's work.....he's going to be the next Williams(at least I hope so).

Haven't heard Farm either, but everyone seems to like it....I have another older telefilm to ask about.

Holdridge's INTO THIN AIR(I hope that title is right). CD is on Citadel, and Jeff Bond seemed to think it was the best score in years....any other takers?

Part one of "Uprising" aired last night (quite a schedule, from World Series Game 7 to Toy Story 2 to The Emmys). Part two is tonight. Score by Maurice Jarre. Anyone see/hear it?

Though I wouldn't go as far as Jeff Bond's response I would say INTO THIN AIR is a very good score, Holdridge does for TV what many composers CAN'T do for big budget films, why this fine and extremely versatile composer isn't working in mainsteam films is a mystery of biblical proportions?!

Saw part of it then switched to municipal election coverage. Jarre's score sounded ok, but I didn't hear enough to judge. Maybe tonight.

Animal Farm is indeed quite good. The songs are my favorite part, but the score is very good, too.

Of course, "Beasts of the World" would be an even better song if they had stuck with Orwell's original lyrics (and title), but it's all still great.

I still don't have any Christopher Gordon, I'm afraid. I know, I know... I'm working on it.

Into Thin Air is a fair score. The film is very good. I have seen parts of it twice. The score is appropriate for it. A lot of Holdridge's TV work is pretty good.

However, that Safan score for the Custer film may be one of the best TV film scores of all time. Very moving. John.

Into Thin Air is a good score, but I can't help but feel it sounds a bit generic... The heroic theme, the standard action music.. All good enough and fun to listen to, but I wouldn't say it's "great"... I personally enjoyed his score to Mists of Avalon much more.

Sean, I'd like to know this as well. I almost pre-ordered it awhile back, but wanted to find out who composed it first. Seeing, that it is from Jarre. I'll probably will get it next month sometime.

Anyone know where there might be some samples?

    Regards,
    Sean Robert Abbey

    ....droooooooooool.......
    hehehe

    From Intrada!

    MAURICE JARRE
    Uprising Milan 35978 $15.99
(45:21) Epic WWII tv mini-series about Holocaust receives solid orchestral score by Jarre. Dramatic, exciting material crosses with occasional tender moments. Orchestra augmented by both children's choir and adult chorus makes for big scale work

NP: Nothing, of course, at work, but the theme from Hoosiers is stuck in my head!

    Best,
    Sean

fyi . . . "Uprising" (the miniseries, not the soundtrack) is scheduled for release next week on DVD, with a ton of extras. You can call it up on amazon.com for all the details.
