When checking the local stores for the expanded Omens (which probably won't arrive before next week) today, I found something interesting: A CD of Goldsmith's Outland score with a cover I don't remember seeing before. It also has one of those transparent jewel cases, so it can't be too old. Label is Warner Bros. While I've never heard this score (yet), I think I can remember the cover from FSM and various websites, but I think the one I saw today is different...

Yes, this is the new WB release, but it has the exact same music that's on the GNP release paired with Capricorn One. The only advantage of getting this new one would be having the score as a stand-alone presentation and having the sleek cover.

The sound IS marginally better than the GNP release, too.

Thanks for the info. I don't yet have Capricorn One either.

The sound is better, Shaun? Hmm. I don't have the new one. Is it better enough to warrant a purchase, even if I have the GNP release?

Shaun says "marginally", so I guess not. But of course, who trusts Shaun?

In my ever so humble opinion, Capricorn One is light years better than Outland.........

When Shaun uses the word "marginally," I get confused.

"Why?" you ask. I'll explain. Let's look at his examination of the score to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

On one hand, he says, "Raiders is a MUST-HAVE!"

And on the other hand, he says, "Al, You're a f***in moron if you don't have Raiders! Why don't you go play a game of 'Hide and Go F*** Yourself'?"

Well, every day that you don't buy Raiders, your chances of survival marginally decrease!

    Al, that's funny.

I had a bunch of money to blow in California, so I took a chance. It's just a little cleaner, whereas parts of the GNP recording sounded like they were recorded underwater. It's not that tremendous that I'd waste $22 on it, but if you have a bunch of money to blow, get that and a copy of Raiders for Al.

And yes, Capricorn One is much, much better than Outland. If we were comparing Capricorn One to Alien, a score to which Outland owes a great debt, I'd have to go with Alien. Nevermind.

    Shaun

I know that Marian likes 'ALIEN' a lot, so he'll probably like 'OUTLAND'.

But pleeaaaaase Marian, GO GET 'CAPRICORN ONE'.

Outland is one of Goldsmith's most brooding scores. It dark, cold, and percussive. I'd certainly say it's one of his best works. I already have the GNP release, so I probably won't shell out the extra bucks just for marginally improved sound. By the way, Warner re-released a whole bunch of their CDs, not just Outland. There are newly remastered CDs of The Wild Bunch and Enter The Dragon (but you should go with the expanded limited Warner releases of these scores as long as you still can). Also available are Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Exorcist II (my personal favorites of the bunch), The Gauntlet, Bullit, Mannix, Summer of '42, and some more. They were released by Warner Music France.

I think I prefer Outland to Capricorn One, if only by a margin. The latter one is terrific and its main theme is at first catchier and hard to resist, but Outland is less obvious and denser, a moody soundscape that's worth to be explored. Has there ever been a more claustrophobic film score?
