Gosh, there are just SO MANY to list! I recommend you get a few of his many compilation albums ("The Essential Elmer Bernstein," "Bernstein by Bernstein" etc.)
    and go from there.

There is a nice Varese compilation including his western themes, drama scores, BLACK CAULDRON, 10 COMMANDMENTS, and more. I think it's pretty great. Also, SPIES LIKE US is a guilty favorite of mine, being that it's lots of fun, so seek that one out from Varese as well. And then, of course, seek out HEAVY METAL at all costs! I found it first on LP and played it endlessly before tracking down a bootleg copy on CD. I can play that without wearing out the LP grooves, but the sound quality varies. Still, it's classic Bernstein.

Of course, The Magnificient Seven is a must-have. I don't have the OST, but the Sedares re-recording is excellent, plus it has a wonderful suite from Hallelujah Trail.

There are tons of EB albums you need, and there are a few duds that will mean nothing to you....

but I have to jump in there and mention one essential...THE TEN COMMANDMENTS!!

There are a million recordings of this out there, including a very nice 2cdr boot that just came out, but the MCA re-recording by the composer from 1989 greatly represents the score in 1 hour, and boasts a great performance. Should be relatively easy to find too....

NP:Band Of Brothers(Kamen)Grazia Peter! This is great! Much better than SPRyan to my ears, and I'm glad Kamen gets to write the melodies he is so good at again

    Other highly recommended Bernstein CDs:

The Comancheros (FSM) (kickass western score)
Devil in a Blue Dress (boot score disc)
    From the Terrace (FSM)
The Great Escape (Ryko or Intrada version)
    Hoodlum
    Magnificent Seven (OST, Ryko, mono)
Rambling Rose (in the nostalgic mode)
Return of the Seven (Ryko -- rerecording of a good sampling of the original Magnificent Seven tracks, for those who don't care for mono)
The Sons of Katie Elder (Tsunami boot)(another kickass western score)
Summer and Smoke (Spanish RCA reissue)
To Kill a Mockingbird (THE classic "small" score)
Twilight (very good film noir score)

I also strongly recommend the Denon Bernstein compilation "Bernstein By Bernstein"

Elmer Bernstein doesn't get a lot of press these days, but he's one of the great screen composers of all time, and is still turning out great stuff, incidentally. Keep your eyes open (though I wouldn't recommend holding your breath) for releases of his classic "Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection" recordings on CD.

Is the Tsunami release the only version? The music is great, but the sound varies between poor and horrible.

"Ghostbusters" is one of my personal favourites! I always liked the piano played main theme, that was on the official LP.
I almost cryed when released the boot after 15 years of waiting. I think it was innovative as a comedy-fantasy score for that time.
From his older ones, "The Great Escape" has a lot of wonderfull themes too.

Marian, the Tsunami boot of "Hallelujah Trail" is, unfortunately, the only soundtrack release out there. The Overture can be found in good shape on the "Best of the West" comp (Ryko); there is also a suite with chorus on the very fine Koch (Sedares)rerecording of "The Magnificent Seven" score. Other than that, we are still without decent releases of some very fine Bernstein scores, including "Ghostbusters" (althought there is a too-short sample from that one on "Bernstein By Bernstein" -- just enough to hook your interest.)

    NP: The Omen (expanded) ****/****

    EM is the man!

He has 3 sides: jazz, chamber, big full orchestra....

    Big:

    Heavy Metal
    The Commancheros
    The 10 Commandments
    The Magnificent 7
    The Sons of Katie Elder
    Some Came Running

    Chamber:

    To Kill A Mockingbird
House-After 5 Years of Living (available on 2 CDs, one from Citadel, the other from EM's Amber label)
    Summer and Smoke

    Jazz:

The Man With the Golden Arm
    The Sweet Smell of Success
    Walk on the Wild Side

Pick up these and you've got as good a Bernstein collection as can be had.

NP: Gongs East (Chico Hamilton Quintet)

There is one more score that has not been released sufficently, but I truly think should be: ANIMAL HOUSE.

While I am very fond of Bernstein's scores for comedies like Animal House, Trading Places, Airplane, Stripes, Spies Like Us, Ghostbusters, even Wild Wild West and Meatballs, I do consider them secondary to the scores I listed.
