Number of those films that were released around "these parts" (as in, any suburb):

    9

It's harder than hell to find a good movie, when all you have is Carmike to deal with. Hell, we didn't get Traffic, O Brother, Where Art Thou? until AFTER the Oscar nominations. Traffic stayed 'round until its release on DVD, as did O Brother. This should have shown them something in regards to "independent" films (O Brother is HARDLY independent, but because it didn't have huge box-office potential...you know, like Freddy Got Fingered......), that people actually want to see them. Memento is released. It is a hit. We never see it. Ghost World comes out. We never see it. Rest assured that if a movie looks really good (that isn't Harry Potter or Lord Of The Rings), we in Altoona will not be seeing it. The Man Who Wasn't There won't be here, that's for sure.

Ah, DVD. You sweet, sweet bitch.

    Shaun

I thought Moulin Rouge was the most impressive new film this year (so far.)

I rented The Mummy Returns last weekend and I thought it was two hours and ten minutes of mindless fun. It was nice to hear Silvestri's score in context, too.

Memento is the only film that I would characterize as exceptional.

I enjoyed Along Came a Spider quite a bit--and felt as though Jurassic Park III was twice as satisfying as both of its predecessors put together. Zoolander was a real hoot, too.

I have heard good word-of-mouth about The Last Castle. Can anyone confirm?

I concur with everyone else, more or less; for the most part, I have been anticipating the DVD releases of the classics as much as anything else.

This year has been a sad one for good films, but as everyone has mentioned already Memento is by far the most exceptional of this year, and yes it does belong in 2001, not 2000. Another favorite of mine this year, which was mentioned just a couple times is Ghostworld. It's not as amazing as Memento, but it is a great film in its own right. I love the characters and the score fits very well with the movie. The indian rock music is great too. If you haven't seen Ghostworld then you are missing out on one of the best movies this year.
