I just learned that this film is being released on DVD this month, which got me thinking about the score by Bill Conti. It´s been ages since I´ve seen the film, but I remember it as being very entertaining, at least eight-ten years ago when I first saw it. I also remember liking the music very much.
SO - I´m hoping someone here has the score and can tell me what it´s like? Are there some good themes? Great action music?
I´ve never really been into Conti´s music, but as I remember the score, I might like it, and if I can find it, I´ll probably pick it up. What do you think?

(Damn, a great score. I gotta get the CD!)

    It's a great score.

Great theme. Great action music. It's a bit too Williamsian for my taste, it sounds too much as if Conti was forced into the post-Star Wars Williams March music obsession of the 1980's.

But it's enjoyable from beginning to end.

If you want to get a copy of this, I'm sure someone would be willing to trade it to you. But, be sure to get the European release from Edel Records. It's longer than the American/Canadian Varese Sarabande version.

I've got the European version. It runs 69 min. and it is a great score.

Conti takes you on a fun ride with this one... definitely get a copy of the Edel release, SFT. I think you'd enjoy it. It'll bring all of those great Dolph Lundgren memories rushing back! LOL.

I too don't care for much of Conti's music on its own (too jazzy for my taste), but Masters of the Universe is an exception since it's so atypical of his style. Heroic fantasy music incredibly well-done. I also like his score for F/X - great thriller and suspense music.

Wasn't there a Silva Screen release?? Anyways, is there any of that music on it where they play the keyboard?

The Silva Screen release is basically the Edel release. I'm not sure what the exact differences are between the two, but in terms of musical content, the Silva is supposed to be identical to the Edel.

Three great Bill Conti scores that I always enjoy listening to: The Right Stuff, North And South (issued together on one CD), and the fabulous Masters Of The Universe.
Yeah, Masters is patterned after the Star Wars saga in every way, but in my (never-to-be-humble) opinion, it's one of the very best of the SW clones. Hey! They hired Richard Edlund to produce the visual effects! He's not only the guy who worked on all three of the original Star Wars films, but went on to produce the dazzling effects for 2010, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Poltergeist, Die Hard, and Air Force One (I was personally disappointed that Edlund wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for that one...he really should have won that year!). Needless to say, his work on Masters is every bit as good as all the others.
In the acting department, if you ignore the fact that Dolph Lundgren can barely speak English (easy, since the screenwriters wisely gave him a mere handful of words), and move on to this grand popcorn flick's real guilty pleasures, you'll find a truly elegant performance by Frank Langella as Skeletor. It amazes me that under tons of skull-shaped plaster, that man's ability to tranfix is undiminished. Meg Foster as Evil-Lyn and Christina Pickles as the Sorceress are both outstanding.
Finally, Bill Conti's score is not only reminiscent of Williams' best, in my (NTBH) opinion, it is every bit as much fun as Williams' best SW work. I know I'll pay for that remark. But I think it's justified. It is a wonderful score, filled with real passion and fiery themes. It elevates the film, AND provides depth (where there is none).

Chris, judging from the ones you listed, you gotta hear FIST(if it gets a good release someday of course...I still have the LP). It really took me by surprise, with some great ballsy brass playing by the LSO, and memorable Americana themes. I find it in line with the ones you mentioned, and it doesn't have any of the pop/jazz that we all find somewhat distasteful at times.

And I'm sure I've said it a million times, but I have to second mister Michael on F/X...it was one of the early symphonic scores I noticed(guess that shows MY age!), and has some terrific brass and percussion showpieces, along with a beautiful 'rainy' main title. My cassette of this is wearing thin, so I'm first in line if Varese issues this in the CD Club(PLEASE!!). Those 'piatti' in 'The Chase' would be heaven to hear on a cd....

PS...the absolute best thing about 'Masters' is the post end title sting....Frank Langella pops up out of the drink, leers at the camera, and hisses 'Ill be Back!'. Sadly, he wasn't, but dammit if that wasn't the funniest way to close out that film!

    Viva Dolph!

Ok, and I hate to start mixing media, here, but I mean...Orko? Great character in the series--where'd he go in the movie? Yeah. And how many of you knew that Man-at-Arms and The Sorceress were Teela's parents. Uh-huh. Prince Adam? Battle Cat? Mer-man? You see where I'm goin' with this. Uh-huh.

Still--gotta love that Mattel method of making anything sound ominous by putting the suffix "-or" on it: "Skeletor"..."Mosquitor"..."Crushor"..."Webstor"...

To clarify re the expanded release, the Edel and Silva releases are one and the same disc! Both Edel and Silva names appear on the inserts, while the Ben-Hur style Silva Screen logo is imprinted on the disc label.

It is a splendidly entertaining score, and I'll chime in to say that I also am really not much of a Conti fan. Before I heard this score, I would never have guessed that he had it in him.

I don't know if this one's still around or not, but you might want to check Screen Archives -- drop an e-mail to craig@screenarchives.com and ask.

    Thanks guys

PS - Actually, Jeron, all my memories of the movie pertain to Langella as Skeletor! That guy rules!
