Well, September was completely dry in terms of score acquisitions for me, so I plan on making up for this in October!
    So far, I've received:

YOUNG GUNS 2 (also includes MAC AND ME & AMERICAN ANTHEM
    GREAT EXPECTATIONS (Doyle)
    MULAN Oscar promo
THE LION IN WINTER, re-recording from Silva

They are all worthy additions; I'm always impressed by Doyle and his contemporary feel in GREAT EXPECTATIONS is a highlight. YOUNG GUNS 2 is good, solid Silvestri with a theme I can't get out of my head now. There is a lot of wonderful music from Goldsmith's MULAN left off the Disney album, which is a shame, but now I can revel in it!
THE LION IN WINTER is almost as good as the original in every way and I love the MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS suite at the end.

I wish I had the money for buying sountracks in mass like that. My entire collection consists of a "Ultimate Star Trek CD," "Gettysburg," and I count my TA (Total Annihilation- Jeremy Soule) CD as film music. That's about it- I just have to listen to the music as I hear it on the movie.
    (Gotta start somewhere-)
    *Sigh*

    New today:

    • Anton Bruckner: Symphony #8 (Vienna Philharmonic, Herbert von Karajan) - Everywhere I looked, this is considered to be the definitive recording. So far, it sounds very good indeed.

And already I have to watch my money for the rest of the month.

    I have that Karajan.

It's nice and well played, and all that, but it's just too damn slow.

Nah, not too slow. In fact, I got it because the Wand recording I have is slightly too fast, and the Celibidache is so slow that it's boring (he takes more than 20 minutes longer than Karajan - works great for the Seventh, but not for the Eigth). The first movement on the Karajan disc sounds excellent, the Scherzo does drag a bit, but it's interestingly different than Wand's. The Adagio is NEARLY too fast, and the Finale is faster than I expected, but not bad - except for the Coda, which is just WAY too fast and loses all it's dignity that way (if you haven't heard it, check out one of Wand's versions just for the Coda, JJ - awesome, though it could be even one more step slower)

After listening to it twice, I'd say it's good (and the first movement excellent), but not definitive - Celibidache's #7 recording remains the only perfect Bruckner recording I know.

Nope, though I wish I had ordered that one instead. Got the new RC2 re-release (the original release in Germany/Austria has poor quality). DTS sound is excellent (I usually don't notice PAL speedup), but the picture is over-sharpened in many scenes. Considering that most of the extras are totally uninteresting (what do I need video footage from the premiere party for!?), the Superbit would have been the better choice.

Three goodies have popped into the box recently...

Raggedy Man - Sounds good initially, Ill play this in the morning. Good 'Saturday Morning' score it seems.
Gremlins 70min. Bootie - Horrendous sound throughout, but has the missing cues from early in the film when the buggers are being experimented on. Label is PHR! Hmmmm...where did you come from?
The Thief Of Baghdad/The Jungle Book - thanks to John Ross, the Colesseum issue of this. Fantastic! Wish JB was in more than one 30min. track. THIS is real film scoring, bugger all that MV stuff.

Nothing much has come in this week, though I did get the following...

Hearts in Atlantis - Mychael Danna

The score is pretty good and the songs are actually rather decent. I really don't mind their inclusion. As for the score, I enjoyed what was there. That said though, another 5-15 minutes might have made for a better album in general. Other than that, I really do need to listen to it some more.

Shrek and JP3 on VHS from VCD.

Sure, it's not much and the quality is kinda crappy, but they're both watchable and the English subtitles on Shrek are simply hilarious.

Why there are English subtitles on an English film on VCD from Malaysia I do not know.

Hey, THE LAST RUN/WILD ROVERS was one of my favorite album releases of last year! Both scores I now rank among my favorite Goldsmith titles. I love the pop beat of LAST RUN as well as its melancholy main theme is quite beautiful (especially in "Claudia's Stockings"). The WILD ROVERS theme is infectious and I enjoy, again, the melancholy, low-key tracks such as "Snow COuntry".
