The Last Castle soundtrack will be available on Oct. 16th, according to CDNow. Being that it is early, they have no mention of release company (presumably DreamWorks, likely not- could be Decca, but if they are, they have no listings yet), or whether it is score alone or whatever other kind of content there may be. However, since this is an intense military/prison thriller with Robert Redford, it seems more likely the soundtrack will be a score-only album.

I've searched the database here and found no information, so if any one would be so kind as to repeat any other info they have, beyond the release date, which I may have repeated already here, I would be grateful.

    thanks! Enjoy Goldsmith fans!

It's definetly all Goldsmith and I'm really curious bout this film and it has a really cool poster to boot. Jeremah Johnson vs. Tony Soprano. Let the battle begin!

I just watched the trailer, and agree it looks to be pretty good. I love all three leads (Mark Ruffalo is a great new actor who looks to be finally hitting it big, he was fantastic in You Can Count On Me. Anyhow, the U-571 piece went well in the trailer, too. I'll probably be there opening night, especially since it's been a long while since I've seen a great film in the theatre... Hopefully this changes that. Hopefully Goldsmith pulls through, I can't imagine he won't as the film looks to be a lot more inspired than Goldsmith's recent projects.

I just found out it's going to be released on the Universal label. Wether it's Decca or just Universal I don't know yet, but the date is correct and it is all score Shaun.

Seagram/Universal owns Decca and distrubutes Dreamwork Records. Whichever label it is released by, it has to go through Universal. I think Dreamworks will be the release label since the film is their production and distribution.

I e-mailed iclassics.com in their comments section of their website- I did that once just to say how I appreciated their efforts with score related releases, so far as Decca is concerned. I point blank asked them this time if The Last Battle would be released through them so far as Jerry's score is concerned. I think a lot of you would agree with me that Decca would be excellent- as proven by recent releases, we'd get a good solid all score CD longer than 40 minutes, presumably. The money has to be there, but I think it may be for this film.

Just heard from a rep over at Decca- they are in fact behind the release for the Last Castle. They should have info or a listing shortly over at iclassics.com. This could mean a solid release for a Goldsmith score.

They'll have info as soon as Jerry & Co. are done recording. The score isn't even finished yet.

    Jeron,

    Thanks for the back-up, pal.

Do you know if they've been recording for awhile? Granted the film a month and a week away, but that's still cutting it close.

5-weeks is NOT cutting it close for film scoring AT ALL.

There have been countless situations where the score wasn't done mixing until about 4 days before the film's release. (Same problem with some visual effects shots on various films as well - always right up to the last minute.)

    5 weeks is a cakewalk.

Plus, I just found out this morning that the ending has been reshot for LAST CASTLE, making it "softer", by the exec's standards. So if they just shot this new ending, then I guess it's back to the recording studio for Goldsmith and time to rework his score. Or they might paste together existng cues from the score into the new finale. It will still be out on time, but if there is new music for the final scenes, they may not be on the album release.

Recording sessions began on Tuesday the 4th. When I spoke with Rod Lurie (on Wednesday), the film was complete and there was no mention of having to shoot a new ending. So apparently the film is complete and the reshoot has been done for some time now (either that, or the reshoot is a rumor. This is the first I've heard of it).

I would certainly trust your info over mine, Jeron, since you spoke with the actual director!
I had read about it this morning over on darkhorizons.com, but it may be that they recieved the "reshoot the ending" information late in the game and only now posted it. Or they are mistaken.
    Sorry I misinformed everyone!

    Dan,

I'm well aware they can and will work right up-to-the minute in post production; I've done it with short films, but it's still cutting it close and probably why they pushed the release date back on the film from Oct 5th to th 12th (other than competition from Arnold's Collateral Damage, but I'm not entirely sure that qualifies as 'compettition'). As I'm sure you're aware, they still have a ton of work in duplicating theatre prints from the original edited/conformed negative print of the film that Mr. Lurie may have already processed for final work like this. But if they started recording this week, than they should be fine, right? If Maestro G were still writing, then we'd have to worry.

The last time he did WROTE AND recorded material for a score in 4 weeks was Air Force One, and I love that score- but his exact quote from that experience was, so I remember, "I'll never do this again". The man is well into retirment age; we're lucky he still works in the field.

I'm a little surprised that Dreamworks isn't releasing "The Last Castle". I guess Dreamworks don't want to do film scores. Decca has done a lot of good classical music cds. They did did a decent job with JAWS. However they do horrid liner notes and they almost never put the track time on their soundtracks. I'm not sold on Decca-yet!

So far the only sure-fire scores to appear on the Dreamworks label are those of John Williams. Liitle wonder.

I don't care who releases the score as long as it's a quality production and I also don't care if is only 30 minutes as long as it's a strong 30 minutes.

There's too darn much music in today's movies anyway. Anyone remember when the typical Goldsmith score was only 30 or 40 minutes in entirety?

Sadly, this movie also has been affected by the attacks. This and serveral other movies (Collateral Damage comes to mind) which have the faintest notion of war/terror/rebellion have been pushed back indefinitely.

Here's one for ya HAL 2000, Six Degrees of Separation is about 15 minutes length and that was all the was in that film. Same goes with Fierce Creatures which is barely 20 minutes as well.
