August's CD Of The Month...Well, it's actually two CDs and, given some of the amazing stuff listed above (I was particularly pleased to get Goldsmith's THE RIVER WILD and Fenton's WHITE MISCHIEF), you'd be right to expect that the best of the month is something very special indeed. The Special Edition of John Williams' THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is a stunning, stunning piece of work. *****

New so far this month in my collection, Richard, are:

    1. Treasure of Sierra Madre-some of the extra music is very good. Good job, Mr. Morgan and Mr. Stromberg.

    2. Last Run/Wild Rovers-pretty good sound. I hadn't heard the Last Run LP in a long time. Good listen. I still don't understand why they didn't include the extra cue on the reissue LP Wild Rovers-Friendly Advice.

All so far this month. I did get a bundle in Aug though. John.

FREE (sort of, the magazine costs a packet) with Number 2 of the Spanish edition of Film Score Monthly:

THE JOHN WILLIAMS COLLECTION. I think that this might be just an old Silva release in new packaging (Prague Philharmonic, Paul Bateman and Nic Raine doing well-known stuff plus Family Plot and The Rare Breed etc).

Some of it sounds quite good, other parts are so terrible they really make you take notice.

It's got a CD ROM thingy which I haven't looked at yet. Does the original Silva release have that?

I've been lax in my score buying lately. The last new scores I've bought were:
    Planet of the Apes
    Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
    A.I.
    Atlantis

I think I'm going to get Aliens: The Deluxe Edition, The Mustketeer and I'm always looking for the score to Shrek (don't know if they have/are going to produce it).

I haven't picked much up lately (been buying expensive coffee table books like Leni Riefenstahl-5 Lives and The Art of Chesley Bonestell), and there are a lot of CDs I need to catch up to, but I have picked up...

FSM-Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (Sawtell and Shefter)

    FSM-The Towering Inferno (Williams)

SAE-The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell (Tiomkin)

BMG-More Music from Peter Gunn (Mancini)

French re-issue of orig. LP-The Fox (Schifrin)

British re-issue of orig. LP-The Man with the Golden Arm (Bernstein)

The Golden Arm CD is available from Screen Archives for $12!!! Previously, Golden Arm was only available on CD from Japan at the price of $32 so this is a great opportunity to get this if you don't already have one (I have a copy on LP but didn't buy the Japanese CD and am glad to finally have a copy of this on CD).

Received The Family Man promo by Danny Elfman. It's a very excellent score, one of the best I've ever heard.

Man, this sure has been a rather bad month. Between everything that has happened and being stuck in bed for near two weeks with a bad cold, I haven't been online much at all. In any case, it's nice to be back.

Here's what has come in since my last posting...

The 4th Floor - Brian Tyler (Promo CD-R)
Bad Day at Black Rock - André Previn
Battle Beyond the Stars/Humanoids from the Deep - James Horner
Best of Stargate SG-1: Season 1 - Various
    Black Scorpion - David G. Russell/Kevin Kiner
    Bubble Boy - John Ottman
    Don Quixote - Richard Hartley
The Glass House - Christopher Young
    Macross Plus - Yoko Kanno
Macross Plus Soundtrack II - Yoko Kanno
The Snows of Kilimanjaro/5 Fingers - Bernard Herrmann
When Good Ghouls Go Bad - Christopher Gordon

NP: The 4th Floor (Brian Tyler) ****

This is pretty darn good and feels quite Chris Young like. While, on the short side I am already on my third listen without any idea when I'll stop. Hmmm, this promo definitely has made me want the actual CD. All in all, it comes highly recommended!

    Regards,
    Sean Robert Abbey

    • Michael Nyman: Nyman Edition No. 1: Concertos
      - Double Concerto for Saxophone, Cello and Orchestra (John Harle, Julian Lloyd Webber, Philharmonia Orchestra)
      - Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings (Elisabeth Chojnacka, Michael Nyman String Orchestra)
      - Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra (Christian Lindberg, BBC Symphony Orchestra)
      All conducted by Michael Nyman

Sounds clearly like Nyman so far, and really good, too.
