Just wanted to post a quick note about this new release...what a treasure!

The DVD has a very crisp video transfer and well done, remastered digital audio.

I never really noticed the score when I was a kid, but it is actually an impressive work from Dave Grusin...though it sounds nothing like his recent work.

Perhaps the best part of the DVD though is the commentary which reunites most of the original cast. Quite entertaining.

The movie is as silly as ever...and bravo for that!

I was able to watch a little of a friend's DVD, and the extras that I saw were great! I didn't see but I heard about the commentary and footage of the actors as they are now. I can't wait to see it! From what I saw, this was worth the wait.

This new DVD is pretty cool, but it frustrates me that, given the opportunity, the filmmakers only included a small chunk of the well-known deleted scenes.

I have always wanted to see the scene in the wishing well where Andy takes the 'Goonie Oath', after which they all discover that they are covered by leeches. Data (I believe) then hooks a battery into the water and fries all the little nasties. It's in the screenplay, and I have seen pictures of the scene.

Wonder why it's not on the DVD.

More disappointing is the story (at DVDfile.com) where the producer of the DVD talks about how they wanted to do a new documentary about the film, but Warner Bros (aka CHEAP PAN AND SCAN BASTARDS) decided not to put the money up for it.

At least we get a commentary and some extras. But this could haven been a KILLER special edition DVD.

Yeah, WHV is a bunch of cheapskates. When the rights to Shawshank Redemption went to them a few years back, they scrapped the big Special Edition that was planned. I don't think I have ever been more disappointed in a DVD release than that one.

Agreed. It's nice to hear about them recording a commentary with Morgan Freeman - and then not using it on the DVD.

    Cheapos.

Speaking of Warner, I wonder why they are not giving Gremlins the "Goonies" treatment. It sort of makes me mad, they just re-released Gremlins on DVD with a different case and color art, but with only one stinking trailer! I know there's plnty of things Joe Dante can dig up from this film that would make a DVD Special Edition of Gremlins like the Ghostbusters one. But will it ever happen?

    Dylan,

They ARE working on a GREMLINS SE (as well as a GREMLINS 2 SE) DVD. Expect them out sometime in 2002.

When I talked with Joe Dante, he said he had recorded commentary for both, and "was trying to get Goldsmith involved" somehow.......

    Hi,

Wow. Thank you very much. You've talked with Joe Dante? Incredible! Can't wait for both of those special editions, should both be very nice.

    Thank you,
    Dylan

    SHAWSHANK was a huge disappointment.

What I really want is a SOUTH PARK SE, but given Paramount's feelings about Stone and Parker, I wonder if that will ever see the light of day. Even so, will it really be a special edition in the truest sense? I doubt it. Anyone heard anything about this?

The editor told a friend of mine that "G2" had about an hour of excised gremlin antics.

Any word on that Dan? Likely to be on the disc?

    Pun intended?

This is a nice disc I agree. The commentary is up there with the goofing off style of many View Askew commentary tracks on Kevin Smith LDs and DVDs, but Feldman tells one joke to many that doesnt work and they're all talking over one another. Astin checking out prior to his "our time" speech was unfortunate. Josh Brolin is just a comic genius though...

PS: All, for what it's worth, Warner plan to re-visit Shawshank soon enough.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were a crapload of deleted scenes in existence. But whether they're on the DVD or not, I honestly don't know.

And something else just struck me - GREMLINS (and GREMLINS 2) are considered "Family Entertainment" by Warner Home Video.

I wonder if they'll be Pan and Scan only?

Considering the recent DVD re-issue of Gremlins retained it's OAR I don't think there is any cause for concern there.

Warner are chatting with the HTF on sept 2nd, I am sure much of the membership is ready and waiting to tear them to shreds unless they quickly re-evaluate the situation.

Lot of controversy right now of this "is it a hoax or isnt it" announcement for a widescreen wonka and cats and dogs...

    Emo,
Paramount wanted a Special edition release of South park, but when they asked Parker to supervise and do a commentary he told them no. He said he was tired from making the movie and said not even a week after it was out at theatres, they already wanted Parker and Stone to do a commentary. He did say that if they were to ever do a SE now he'd do it. If you like commentaries, then listen to Parker and Stone's commentary for the Cannibal! The Musical DVD. They get drunk during the commentray. Very funny stuff!

    Dan,

Yup, some of us over at the forum got the official press release through from warner too. Could not be happier over this now! Who said ranting doesnt get you anywhere? The whole "is it or isnt it!" thing seemed to be down to a poor WB exec who wasnt cut in on the announcement. Everyone was going nuts. Now all we hope is that they get the message for all future releases, but I get the feeling this is far from over...
