Ok, now that this weekend's MovieMusic March of the Munchkins is just about through, I am preparing the latest poll:

Which was your favorite movie soundtrack this summer?

I need up to seven choices. Which do you think are the seven best options?

Thanks a munch. I mean bunch.

    • Final Fantasy
    • Jurassic Park 3
    • A.I.
    • Planet of the Apes
    • Shrek

...are those that come to my mind (I haven't heard the latter two myself). And they're hardly surprising.

    BTW, don't FishChips evolve?

NP: Air Force One (Jerry Goldsmith)

I can't give you seven choices Pete, on the whole it's been a pretty poor time for good scores, though I have yet to hear either Final Fantasy or AI?!

Jurassic III by Davis was ok, but I found it a little repetitive on the Williams themes!

Planet Of The Apes, this is just a nothing score, nothing captivating here whatsoever, and I bought this due to peoples recommendations...I'll think twice next time. I despair at the idea of an Elfman SPIDERMAN!

I don't think I have a lot of good to say here Pete so I better leave it at that.

I second what Timmer just said.

A really good poll would be this:

Danny Elfman, the Fun-Fa King, should:

    1) Retire

    2) Learn some music

    3) Go back to sing tunes in the Oingo-Bongo

    4) Marry Tim "Freakshow" Burton and move to Mars

    5) All the above

Danny Elfman is not that bad and like someone else said- expect him to be really big one day. From music from a darkened theater1 , there was a great piece from familly dog (Odds and ends) It showed he was a great composer almost as good as Goldsmith, but for some reason he went Grainer. Now Grainer is not bad, but Elfman has a hard time acheiving the late Grainer style- thereby making half of his music on each CD not very good. Or completely bad like Dick Tracy. I expect to own many albums in the future from him. I have a feeling he is going to score something very good these next few years that will catapolt him up in the indusrty. Just as long as he doesn't compete with GOLDSMITH.

Dude, just have a poll to figure out the best seven choices for poll.

Don't you have an opinion on what YOU think are the seven best summer scores?? Why not just use THOSE as the choices?

Sometimes you look too hard for something that's right under your nose....

Dan, you're missing the point. If I think it's fun to involve people the makings of this site, the only way to involve them is to communicate with them. So go get bothered by something else, cuz this one's too simple a thing to get yer panties in a wad.

The question is... which would be your favorite seven of the summer? Thanks for answering!

    Pearl Harbour

Those were the big films/scores this summer, despite some of them not living up to expectations.

    My picks:

    The Mummy Returns
The Mexican (does that count as summer?)
    Final Fantasy
    Planet of the Apes
    Pearl Harbor
    Atlantis
    Shrek

If I had to vote now...Final Fantasy all the way.

Funny joke Dan if you think punchlines aren't important. Use the winking icon next time and you won't have to explain your humor. When I first read your joke I thought you were trying to start another anal pointless flamewar with the FishChip. Do we want another one? Why not, there's enough going on anyway.

Anyway I haven't seen seven films this summer but these are the ones I liked:

    Mummy Returns
    Pearl Harbor
    Jurassic Park 3
    Final Fantasy

Apparently you have to use winking icons to denote humor; since it's lost on many people. (Like PeterK's lack of a winking icon when he suggested a vote for Daniel2.2 as moderator?)

Oh, please. I have much better things to do than argue with Peter over something as stupid as this! I was just trying to see if HE had any thoughts as to what HIS seven favorite summer soundtrack were. I'm still waiting on the answer, of course. And I have a feeling we'll be waiting a long time.

Those are all I can think of. Maybe this is just a Chicago thing, but I don't consider May summer yet, so Shrek and The Mummy Returns are off my list (and I'm not too crazy about Pearl Harbor in the first place).

The Mexican? March in Chicago definitely isn't summer. I'm not sure where Quill lives.

    THE OTHERS
    A.I.
    THE MUMMY RETURNS
    FINAL FANTASY
    ATLANTIS

We're now entering in the second semester of 2001 and those are the only "good" scores people can list, whith one or two variations.

What an awful year for filmscoring...

I can't comment on A.I. I haven't seen the film or heard the score. [Reading Jeff Bond's review at FSM today makes me think that I wouldn't care for it, though....]

That said, though, the only score that impressed me this summer was ATLANTIS. THE MUMMY RETURNS had its moments, but didn't stack up at all in comparison to Goldsmith's original--especially considering the original's wonderful linear characteristics.

HAL said it to me best in an e-mail that he wrote to me not too long ago; this summer has been really dry. [I think that we both missed having a sturdy Goldsmith score or two as we've had for the last several summers.]

I recall that I was thinking a couple of days ago about this summer's drought. At this point last year, I was still reveling in HOLLOW MAN's excesses.

Suffice it to say that there's been no HOLLOW MAN this year....

In addition to ATLANTIS, I enjoyed ALONG CAME A SPIDER and I eagerly await David Arnold's score for THE MUSKETEER. After hearing sound clips, I'd say that the score seems promising....

Can we really blame the composers but so much? What material could have inspired someone to write something like HOLLOW MAN or THE SIXTH SENSE???

JURASSIC PARK III - My favourite of the summer so far. Terrific score. I don't think it leans too heavily on Williams' originals.

PEARL HARBOR - Fair only. Zimmer's done a lot better than this one.

FINAL FANTASY - I haven't seen the film yet, but I've given the CD a spin and I like it a lot.

PLANET OF THE APES - I'm ready to give up on Danny Elfman. I haven't seen the film yet either (it only opened on Friday), but if the score's representative...oh dear...

THE MUMMY RETURNS - I don't think this is as good as Goldsmith's original, but I do like it.

LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER - Surprised no-one's mentioned it yet. Of course, that could be because it's rubbish... To be honest, I can't remember the score.

That's six I've either seen the film or got the score (or both). Add any one from RUSH HOUR 2, A.I., SHREK, CATS & DOGS, and ATLANTIS.

    NP: PRINCESS CARABOO (Richard Hartley)

Just out of curiosity- to those of you who didn't like the Planet of The Apes: Why? What about it, specifically, was bad?

That may sound like a demand for those of you to justify yourselves- believe me it's not, I just read a lot of posts denouncing something, I think I owe it to my own curiosity to see why the reaction is less than positive toward Elfman's score. If you don't tell me, it won't kill me- unless...oh no... I DRANK WHAT?!?

Seriously, I'm not here to force an answer, it'd just be nice to understand the point of view.

As for my votes (in no particular order):
    Planet of The Apes
    The Mummy Returns
    A.I.
    Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (James Venable's score is a lot of fun).

Mr. Debney did some nice work on the new Disney flick, Princess Diaries. There's alot of other pop music on the film, but the parts that Mr. Debney did are first rate and helped make an otherwise predictable kid movie a pleasure to listen to.

The other movies, well . . . they seem to be mostly replayed scores or no themes. Speaking about the others, Alexandro did pretty good with The Others.

As for Mists of Avalon, its not a summer score, its a TV score and dosen't count, maybe when we do the best TV score of 2001, then we put it in there.

Goldenthal's "Final Fantasy" was definitely the knock-out score of the summer, unfortunately absent of Goldsmith and Morricone.

Elfman's main title music to "Planet of the Apes" was nifty.

And "The Others" was very effective in bringing out the goosebumps. Though the excellent sound design in the film was responsible for most of it as well.
