To what level would you rate yourself as a film music fan? This is a questionaire topic that hasn't been started as far as I'm aware. Over the years, I've regarded myself as pretty unique in being a film music fan until the internet came along and I discovered places like here. I've built up quite a collection of scores, but compared to the collections of some of the people on this board, I am only an average collector. It never ceases to amaze me, the knowledge of film scores that some members here have. If you were to answer the questions below what would they be? If you can think of any other questions feel free to put them in. This is solely for a bit of fun and to get to know other members better.Answer only YES to the statements that apply to you.
Here are my questions and answers.
1) I dont even like soundtracks (what the hell are you doing here then?
) 2) I notice music in films, but dont have many soundtracks.
3) I enjoy soundtracks, but listen to all kinds of music. YES
4) I mainly listen to "modern" scores like Zimmer,Rabin, Powell etc.
5) I mainly listen to "classic" scores of the past like Herrmann, Rozsa, early Williams, Goldsmith etc.. YES
6)I listen to both modern and old scores. YES
7) I only listen to film music.
8) I couldn't live without music. YES
9) I enjoy it, but its only music.
10) I am a fan of really only one or two composers, the others dont interest me much.
11) I have dozens of scores by a few main favourite composers (Williams, Goldsmith
etc) but only one or two scores by other composers. YES12) I find it hard to keep up with all the latest scores out and have a mainly retro approach to older scores YES
13) I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of film music and always find out about it.
14) I am obssessed with one particular composer who I "stalk" and gather information on from anywhere I can e.g. Danny Elfman
15) My collection is less than 100 scores
16) My collection is between 100 to 500 scores
17) My collection is between 500 and 1000 scores YES
18) My collection exceeds 1000 scores
19) I prefer orchestral scores YES
20) I prefer synthesized scores
21) I enjoy scores with both orchestra and synths YES
22) I hate scores with both orchestra and synths.
23) I have written a thesis or other major work on film music for college etc. YES
24) I listen to a film score almost every day YES
25) I compose music myself. YES
26) I play one or more instruments to a high level YES
27) I go to film music concerts whenever I can
28) I've never been to a film music concert
29) I've been to a film music concert only once or twice YES
30)I've only become a film music fan recently (in the past few years)
31) I've been into film music for more than 10 years YES
If you can think of questions I've missed out, feel free to add more. How would you truthfully describe yourself as a movie-music fan?
I would say this about myself.I am a film music fan to the point that I love collecting and listening to scores but it doesn't run my whole life. I'm interested in finding out news about my favourite composers, but not to the point where I want to know what they had for breakfast etc!
The most important thing is that the music speaks to me. On this site I would rate myself as an average fan with a reasonable collection. Outside of Moviemusic.com and to my friends I am a weirdo who listens to and collects film scores!!
...It's all "relative" isn't it.

Gae, this is an interesting set of questions. I will be interested in reading all of the other replies too of the other folks.I will answer only those specifically revelant:
6. I listen to both modern and older(classic scores). I like film music from 1929 to the present and my collection covers the entire period.
9. I enjoy film music very much and has been a large part of my life since late '50s. Grew up liking all kinds of music though. Classical, jazz, MOR and much more. It is only music though. I can go periods without listening to it, but I prefer to not do that since I enjoy it. When I am away from it for a few days I really miss it.
13. Like to study and read on many aspects of film music history. Have many books on it, many discographies/filmographies and medium amount of knowledge on some topics. On Newman, Goldsmith and a few others I know quite a bit. It has been a hobby since the 1960's so I have picked up stuff here and there since.I enjoy picking up knowledge from others and exchanging it with them. There are many knowledgable people here on the board and some of them while young, have a lot of knowledge.
18. Collection has more than 1000 scores in it. Covering 1929 to present.
19. I prefer orchestral scores, but like some synth stuff too. Orchestral and synth mixes don't bother me much if done well and the music is good.
21. I like both of them.
24. Yes.
26. I played 5 brass instruments in past. From 1959-1970 played trumpet and was first chair in two bands for a couple of years. Our high school band was one of the best in the country in 1963-1969. Also played four other brass instruments in high school and college.
27. Been to two Goldsmith concerts in 1989 and got to chat with him for a few mins while he was signing autographs at Springfield, Mo. Been to a couple of others also.
31. My interest in film music dates to late '50s when I first noticed Korngold, Skinner, Salter, Steiner, etc. in old films on TV in Ft. Worth. In early '60s I noticed Rozsa, Goldsmith and Newman and it went from there. Serious collecting started in 1979. I had around 100 LPs up til then. Since I have bought 100s and 100s. My main interest is the music both in and out of the film, the melodies, how the music works in the film and how the music makes certain scenes memorable. Film music is a great hobby and it keep a lot of us out of serious trouble. Best, John.

Hmmm, this is a great topic IMO.As for myself, here are the ones that apply to me. Some more than others though!
I went ahead and added some additional comments.
(3) I enjoy soundtracks, but listen to all kinds of music.)
Yes, though they get the most of my attention. That said, from Classical, Rock/pop, Jazz, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, New Age, you name it, I like it! Not so much Country, but even that has some I like as well.
(6)I listen to both modern and old scores.)
Yes, though the modern scores seem to be in the majority. I'll listen to anything I can get my hands on either way.
(8) I couldn't live without music.)
Of course this isn't true, though one can feel that way seeing how addictive this stuff is!
Really though, music is a part of my life, a part that I doubt I could give up. But, would I die? No! For some it might very well lead to such a event, if they are emotionally unbalanced. Sorry to say, but I know a few who would go over the deep end if they lost their highs as it were. For some, music is such a high!
(11) I have dozens of scores by a few main favourite composers (Williams, Goldsmith etc) but only one or two scores by other composers.)
This is somewhat correct. Though, most are closer to 3-5 in my collection. While, my favorites on average are about 7-12. Only Goldsmith, Williams, Horner and Silvestri are in the top billing, size wise. With each being about 25-50 each.
John Barry, Basil Poledouris and Hans Zimmer are not that far behind either.
(12) I find it hard to keep up with all the latest scores out and have a mainly retro approach to older scores)
I guess! I don't as much than others might. Even then, with as much coming out it is much harder these days to keep up with all that is available. I am definitely noticing my buying of older releases is at an all time low. Just too many new releases to buy, so, I miss out on scores from all sides. New and old. To be honest, unless you're rich, saying otherwise is just wishful thinking.
(13) I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of film music and always find out about it.)
Well, it counts on what you mean by encyclopedic knowledge!? I find, that I do know quite a lot more about film music than anything else of importance. Though, yet have portions of which can't be brought up on a whim. For a example, I suck at the Mystery clip contests and the like. As always, I am always learning more about the music and relish the chance to do so.
IMO, I feel that this is all an ever-growing cycle. That, and my family finds it strange that I can name almost any composer related to any given film.
(17) My collection is between 500 and 1000 scores)
Yes! I love them all, but am running out of space fast!
(19) I prefer orchestral scores)
Not necessarily!
(20) I prefer synthesized scores)
Ditto!
(21) I enjoy scores with both orchestra and synths)
Yes! Both are equally impressive in my mind! Though, I still lean towards orchestral scores in most circumstances. Though, not so much as to say one is better than the other.
As for synths being used with the orchestra. I love it, as long as they are used creatively and not just as filler. Too many composers these days add synths, and truthfully speaking do a very poor job at it. The ones who do a good job with it, I'll more than welcome it's inclusion.
(23) I have written a thesis or other major work on film music for college etc.)
Nope! Though, I have wrote countless reviews at my site and around the web for the last 2 years.
(24) I listen to a film score almost every day)
Not to the actual CD', but to the bunch of mp3' I have on my hard drive, yes!
(28) I've never been to a film music concert)
Unfortunately, no!
(30)I've only become a film music fan recently (in the past few years))
Sort of! I have only been collecting since 1992. Though, not this seriously till around 1995
(31) I've been into film music for more than 10 years)
Pretty close to 10 years I wager!

More so, if you mean purely as a fan of the music. I have noticed and enjoyed the music as long as I can remember. Though, it was during the late 80's, around the time of Batman that it really stood out. My first experience was with the Star Wars, Back to the Future and Indiana Jones trilogies. As well as, countless TV series and cartoons from the 80's too. The Star Trek films are personal favorites also.

I really do believe this. Of course, if there's something that keeps you from listening to music although you COULD listen to music if you wanted to, it's no problem. But if you DO want to listen to music but can't, it gets really hard. I recently didn't have my CD player at home for two days, and got really nervous, sitting in front of the computer and not being able to play music (it's no fun on the computer
). I caught me several times thinking "ah, I'll play xxx now", only to realize that I can't.quote:

-To some extent, yes. Most new scores aren't released where I live, but I find many older scores in 2nd hand CD shops. Plus I can't afford to spend $30 on a new cd everytime I want one.13) I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of film music and always find out about it.
-I have
a reasonable knowledge, definetly more than any other form of music, but I don't know I'd be arrogant enough to say it was "encyclopaedic".

Here comes, Gae
3) YES - especially theme park music: Disney Parks, Sea World, Universal Studios, etc.
4) Yuck - I've never liked Zimmer or Rabin; too lame in my opinion
5) YEESSSS - (well, not so much Herrmann) but Miklos Rozsa (especially Spellbound - five stars!!!); I love Williams' HOW TO STEAL A MILLION; and nearly everything from the Disney Classics' background scores, they're magnificent.
6) Both modern and old scores, yes - but older ones make my soul take flight
8) I maybe even could live without music (-I have long periods when I want to "live" in silence-) but then my life would not be as enjoyable, I guess.
11) I have to answer to this by saying that in movie music it is very important having an overall knowledge of everything - one couldn't regard Silvestri, Williams or Goldsmith as top composers if not knowing the others too.
12) I find it hard to keep up with all the latest scores - well, yes, but HARDER is GETTING them here to the Top of the World.
13) I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of movie music (in overall), yes - but I have also an ability of recognizing the composers just by listening to a score (without knowing the composer) - ANYONE ELSE ???
16) 100 - 500; but I have vast collection of compilations which make my collection contain music from nearly 4000 movies, tv series, musicals, theme parks and other specials.
19) I REALLY prefer orchestral scores but -
21) - clever use of synthesizers among the orchestral sound is not bad.
22) Although enough is enough - I can't stand some of Goldsmith's "too-synthesized" scores, for example RAMBO II...23) Well, not a thesis, but I've written couple of essays - - - and some reviews

25) I don't compose music myself because I don't understand music theory at all; but as the result of almost fifteen years of listening to great movie music I nowadays have an ability to know what works and what won't. I supervised my musically-talented sister in composing the background music for an amusement park attraction - and our "fruitful" collaboration continues even today.
27) I've been in one movie music concert only - but what a experience it was! The concert took place in 1993, during the "Oulu Film Festival" in Finland and Jerry Goldsmith was "the topic" and the star. By a lucky coincidence, I lived in the same hotel with Mr. Goldsmith and I had the privilege of sharing a wonderful conversation with him.
31) I've been in movie music since 1986. Williams' DRACULA soundtrack was the very first one; some time after it I saw RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK on tv, and I was only positively surprised by Williams' great score. It lead to the ignition of my movie music love.
I don't regard myself as a very enthusiastic movie music collector (-well, if I had muchmuch more money, I probably would buy almost everything from MovieMusic com..!)
In recent years my "going-to-the-movies" has diminished enourmously, as has the soundtrack collecting also... Movie music has always supported my own dreaming of a better tomorrow - and now it's time to stop the dreaming and work for making the dream come true.- Yet, on bad days I can always put a cd on and be carried away from this disturbed world.

31) I've been into film music for more than 10 years
Well... neither, and both. In retrospective, I've always liked film music. But it was not until 1995 that I really understood that, and began listening to it more seriously. How would you truthfully describe yourself as a movie-music fan?
I would say this about myself.
I am a film music fan to the point that I love collecting and listening to scores but it doesn't run my whole life. I'm interested in finding out news about my favourite composers, but not to the point where I want to know what they had for breakfast etc!

3) I enjoy soundtracks, but listen to all kinds of music.
Yes. In my youth, I was just as happy listening to Genesis or Pink Floyd as I was Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams. Today I still lend an ear to rock or jazz or electronic music just as much as film scores.6)I listen to both modern and old scores.
Yes. It took a while, but once I put aside my tricky teenage years I discovered the golden oldies like Rosza and Herrmann with a vengeance.8) I couldn't live without music.
Yes. And no. I'd prefer not to live without it, but I have long periods where I don't listen to anything. Sometimes silence is music to the soul.12) I find it hard to keep up with all the latest scores out and have a mainly retro approach to older scores
Yes. As I get older I find that most of the modern scores have a "been there, heard that" feel to my ears. My head is already full of at least forty years of music, so it's inevitable, perhaps, that a modern score just makes me shrug. I can't get excited about the "newbies" too much, but this is also because I feel that modern films are generally weak and their scores seem too generic-sounding - where are the distinct "voices" that attracted me to film scoring in the forst place? Yes, people point them out to me, but to be honest I don't hear what they're hearing. Old age.13) I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of film music and always find out about it.
Sort of. I find that my brain effortlessly soaks up info about scores and composers ... now if only it could effortlessly soak up something really useful, like foreign languages, or geography, or how to invest money.18) My collection exceeds 1000 scores
Haven't counted recently, but I suspect I entered this bracket a few months back.21) I enjoy scores with both orchestra and synths
Yes, no problem with this at all - heck, throw in a drum kit and electric guitar and didgeridoo ... but just go easy on the darn shakuhachi.25) I compose music myself.
I have dreams where I hear music - new film scores - and I can still hear them in my head for a few minutes after I wake up ... but then, sadly, they dissolve away.29) I've been to a film music concert only once or twice
The only concert I've been to is Goldsmith at the Barbican back in the late 80s. I won a competition in now-defunct Photoplay magazine. I think mine was the only correct answer. Or the only entry. I'd go more often if I lived nearer the big cities ... and I'd definitely make more of an effort if the program was more imaginative and included music less familiar. But that's just me.31) I've been into film music for more than 10 years
Since the sixties, when I was a mere nipper. Barry's Bond, Goldsmith's Apes, Bernstein's westerns, Schifrin's thrillers, and classic TV music like Thunderbirds and The Saint and Alias Smith & Jones are all old friends from my childhood.posted 08-09-2001 12:20 PM PT (US)

Here's my info, Gae. I answered YES to the following:3) I ENJOY SOUNDTRACKS BUT LISTEN TO ALL KINDS OF MUSIC. Though soundtracks get the lion's share of my time.
5) I LISTEN TO MAINLY THE CLASSIC SCORES FROM THE PAST. And increasingly so.
6) I LISTEN TO BOTH MODERN AND OLD SOUNDTRACKS. But see number 5.
8) I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT MUSIC. Actually, that's not true, but I'd certainly hate to lose the chance to decide. God, can you imagine waking up deaf one day?
11) I HAVE DOZENS OF SOUNDTRACKS BY A FEW OF MY FAVOURITES, THEN ONE OR TWO BY A FEW OTHERS. Well, kind of. I do have dozens of Goldsmiths, Williams, Rozsas and Herrmanns, but also a fair representation of many other composers. Is this a yes or a no?
12) IT'S HARD TO KEEP UP. I'M MOSTLY RETRO. Indeed. I don't get much of a kick out of seeing the Upcoming Assignments sheets nowadays. 100 different names for 100 different films! Who are Ringo Chardley, Cartman Fishhead and Jelly-O Fatboy anyway? Well, good luck to them.
13) I HAVE AN ENCYCLOPAEDIC KNOWLEDGE OF FILM MUSIC. Of course, haven't we all? Hang on, that's really another well sort of. I'm pretty good on the things I grew up with, like Hammer horror, 70's TV and jazz scores, but I'm just stumbling around in the dark nowadays.
14) I'M OBSESSED WITH THE WORK OF ONE COMPOSER. That sounds weird, so I'll say that I have a "keen interest" in unearthing information on Gil Melle, and, indeed have had some interesting archaeological finds in this matter. What started that off was hearing his Frankenstein The True Story about...cripes, that long ago?
17) I HAVE 500- 1000 SCORES. Must be something like that. I'm including all my old LPs in this figure.
19) I PREFER ORCHESTRAL SCORES. I think so, in general. But there are plenty of examples of bad orchestral scores, just as there are many examples of good non-orchetral ones.
21) I ENJOY ORCHESTRAL AND SYNTH SCORES. What, as part of the same score? Whatever, I do enjoy both separate entities, and combined.
22) I LISTEN TO A SOUNDTRACK ALMOST EVERY DAY. But sometimes only one, even if I have the time. I don't like my movies overscored, ditto my life!
29) I'VE BEEN TO A FILM MUSIC CONCERT ONLY ONCE OR TWICE IN MY LIFE. Only twice, unfortunately, back in about 89. Jerry Goldsmith at The Barbican. The day before I saw him do another special concert for the radio, but it wasn't going out live, so they stopped if there were fluffs in the playing etc. I thought that was better than the Barbican concert. I'd love to go to more concerts, but I'm extremely isolated geographically.
31) I'VE BEEN INTO FILM MUSIC FOR MORE THAN TEN YEARS. Started taping off the TV about THIRTY years ago. Been collecting since about 1975 or earlier. Am suddenly depressed at age.
As for the LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME, Gae, it's THE SAME as the little bit about YOU!

Hey, Tim, when you say "blah blah blah: YES: FALSE", does that mean Yes, No, True, or False? And thanks for the welcome back, Gae. "What Have You Seen In...?" will be back soon, though nothing's to stop anyone starting a new one for the remainder of August.

3) I enjoy soundtracks, but listen to all kinds of music.
Big list in profile.
6)I listen to both modern and old scores.
Yup. Although, there is perhaps a slight preference for more recent ones (well, from '80s on).
8) I couldn't live without music.
Maybe not quite literally, but I would go completely insane/more insane.
11) I have dozens of scores by a few main favourite composers (Williams, Goldsmith
etc) but only one or two scores by other composers.Around 60 Goldsmith, maybe 10-15 for people like Elfman, Williams, or Beltrami, then usually just three or four for other.
16) My collection is between 100 to 500 scores
19) I prefer orchestral scores
Yes, but:
21) I enjoy scores with both orchestra and synths
Which is not to say that I don't enjoy synth scores too. But usually I'd sooner take an orchestral one.24) I listen to a film score almost every day
Pretty much. Often many, although sometimes I have days when I may only listen to rock/dance/classical/whatever, but it all balances out over time.
27) I go to film music concerts whenever I can
Two Williams, Four Goldsmith, plus some random ones.

I listen to all kinds of music. I listen to old and new scores but mostly classic scores. Prefer orchestral but synths/mixed are ok. I could live without music but it wouldn't be as much fun. My collection exceeds 1000 scores. I listen to a film score just about everyday. I've been into this over a decade and I have gone to a few film music concerts, but it's actually not my ideal setting to listen to film music.

Well, let's see...
3.YES...I like almost EVERY kind of "music"...EXCEPT...Crap,Punk, and Heavy Metal, none of which IMHO is music, but is noise...but, hey...to each his own...whatever floats your boat.
6.YES...I listen to both, but like the "older" scores more...they knew how to actually write melodies and tunes, as apposed to MOST, not ALL, of the S.T.'s now days...again, just MHO.
8.YES...who would want to live without music? That would be like wanting to live without air to breath...life would be a bitch without the enrichment of music!
18.YES...as of today, I have 1,446 S.T.'s...as stated in #3, I like most all forms of music...Pop/Rock,Classical,Jazz,R&B,Easy Listening,Big Band,Country...even Opera (mainly featuring the great Mario Lanza). Besides the 1,446 S.T.'s, I also have 2,688 other CD's...a mixture of all of the "types" of music mentioned above.
19.YES...orchestral scores are IMHO superior to synth...that almost goes without saying.
21.YES...I ALSO enjoy some synth scores, besides Orchestral, but they are in the minority in my collection.
24.YES...virtually, not a day goes by that I don't listen to a film score...music appreciation is a HUGE part of my life.
31.YES...I've loved film music for a long time...several decades as a matter of fact.NP:Adventures in Jazz...Stan Kenton
