Because if you don't, it's going out of print (presumably with all of the other MCA-licensed titles that Varese has released).

I can only think of two others from this batch of titles, but they're both well worth it. Those titles are Williams' Jaws 2 (who DOESN'T like this score?) and Dracula ('79 version, which a group of bastards who shall remain nameless finally talked me into buying).

So, get 'em while you can!

    Shaun

IMHO, all three of these scores are must-haves, perhaps Dracula less so, but it's still a great score. Conan and Jaws 2 are masterpieces.

And thanks to Timmer, I don't have to listen to my Milan Conan anymore. It's NO alternative!

Yes, it does. Even at 67 minutes, there is about 20 minutes of amazing material still not on Varese's album... I'll take a 2CD rerelease or, considering Mr. Poledouris was never happy with the sound of the original sessions, a super-fat rerecording!

I have been trying to get people motivated about this exact thing periodically for as long as I have been visiting these message boards. Most people respond by saying, "I'm happy with the album as is." Well, I say you'd be happier with all the music!

This deletion seems as good a reason as any to start rumbling about an 'Ultimate' Conan recording.

    Hmm, that sucks.

If its all the Varese/MCA releases, then this must mean Earthquake and The Eiger Sanction will be disappearing, too.

The Masada disc already disappeared months ago.

That's correct. Any title that Varese licensed from MCA is now gone. Any remaining copies are being returned to the distributor where they'll probably be destroyed.
This includes stuff like both Conan CDs, Ghost Story by Sarde, Dracula, Eiger Sanction, Earthquake and Jaws 2 by Williams, Firestarter and Legend by Tangerine Dream and a few others I'm forgetting.

Ouch! Harsh! I think I am going to be sick!

Why not just sell off the remainder to used CD stores and other such retail outlets?! At least, that will give people a chance to get them for at least a short while until copies run out. In any case, I have a good portion of those I want, but still, this isn't good news at all! What a waste!

Are you sure they have to be shipped back and destroyed? There is something in the record industry where "deleted" inventory are left to sell through for a period of time--say 6 mths or so...I am not entirely clear on the process but it is part of a licensing deal that a "window" is left open for sales after the license expires. Perhaps this only applies if the license is being re-negotiated for a new term as opposed to being terminated...

Maybe someone who knows what the hell is going on can elucidate as I am being speculative.

I can't say anything about this with absolute certainty. I can only pass on what I've been told. I tried to order some of these things from our local one-stop and they are now being listed as cut-out, which means we can't get them anymore.
And let's not forget that some of these titles, like Masada and Ghost Story, have been out of print for some time already.

All those who don't own Conan must get it now or be chained to the Wheel of Pain for eternity.

The DVD was supposed to have an isolated score track, but it was dropped for some reason.

Both Jaws 2 and Dracula need a good remastering and expansion, but these albums are required listening.

I don't hear anything wrong with the orchestra's performance or with the recording of the CONAN, THE BARBARIAN's score.

Could be better? Perhaps, but this doesn't mean it's bad. On the contrary. I think the orchestra and the chorus did a fine job and the recording is quite "heavy", which helps even more the score to sound so powerful.

Wanna talk about a really bad orchestra performance and recording? Then talk about CONAN, THE DESTROYER....

The sound is very good for an early 80's unremastered soundtrack recording, but disappointing for an orchestral recording (like most scores from that time are): I'd never have guessed that those are 16 trombones in the opening track!

As for those who don't have the CD and don't buy it: I'll crush them, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentation of the women!

    NP Conan the Barbarian (Varese).

Thanks for reminding me about this one, I haven't listened to it for ages!

A quick search of Moviemusic's store shows that Jaws 2 is available, for less than $12. And I know of at least one other online store that still has copies...

I never have understood the whole theory behind ISO scores detracting from CD sales. An ISO DVD score is very limited, in that it can only be played on a DVD player, which one would assume is connected to a TV. With the CD, you can play it on your computer, in your car, in a portable CD player...the possibilities are far more available. Also, the CD is usually better mixed; ISO scores sometimes waver in volume because of the action on screen. Gimme the ISO scores, please...I'm still going to buy the CD, dammit, especially if the movie sucks.

    Mike

I think what most composers / producers fear is what is in this day inevitable: someone making a perfect digital clone of the isolated score and booting it to a CD illegally. Ergo, we all go out and buy it because it is complete and we can listen to it in our cars, and the composer gets screwed out of much-deserved royalties.

Shaun, I've got 80 minutes of Conan, 40 from the Milan CD and 40 from the LP. Do I get a special prize or torture?

Torture, Graham. The Varese has much great stuff that's not on the Milan. (Big thanks to Timmer, without whom I'd still be listening to my Milan CD ).

And like Don Davis said, CDs can be copied even more easily than DVD iso scores. Composers might loose the royalties of those people who BUY the DVD instead of the CD to make their own iso score. But those who get the iso score CDs from someone else for free are just as likely to get CDRs of the official CD if there's no DVD.
