I read this hilarious novel (by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett) not too long ago and came upon an interesting portion concerning our message board. At one point a biker comes into the story, and he is described as having "F-I-S-H" tattooed on his knuckles on one hand, and "C-H-I-P" tattooed on his knuckles on the other hand. Care to comment, Mr. K?

So Terry Gilliam's bringing this one to the screen. Good thing it's him, he's the only director I can think of who could visually pull off this story's ending and still make it as good as the novel.

So what's it about? One comment online rightfully described called it "Monty Python's THE OMEN." GOOD OMENS is a wonderful comedic fantasy about Armageddon. There's the Satanic nuns who misplace the antichrist, the Four Horsemen who ride motorcycles, the great back-and-forth between the angel and the demon who are friends with each other and decide they like the earth too much to let the Apocalypse take place... and then, every now and again, it suddenly becomes very poignant and thoughtful... there's just so much great stuff in this novel it's impossible to summarize. But I think Gilliam can pull it off. And if there is any justice in the world, Alan Rickman will play the aforementioned demon; the part seems tailor-made for him.

So, who do you think should score this film?

    My choices are as follows:
1.) Michael Kamen - because his best work (BRAZIL and THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN) has been for Gilliam
2.) Don Davis - because I know he could do it, and I think he needs to throw a comedy somewhere in between all these thrillers and horror films he's scoring
3.) John Du Prez - because he's underrated and underused these days, he's worked with Gilliam before, and he's English (we want to keep this film as English as the novel)
4.) Patrick Doyle - because he's a darn good composer, and he's also from the UK
5.) Anne Dudley - an unexpected choice, and once again, English... but she's a darn fine composer as well, and seems to have a good sense of comedy in the films she's done

Any other ideas? (And has anyone else here read this jewel of a book?)

    James

    Michael Kamen all the way!

But your other choices are top notch. How bout Bruce Broughton, John Ottman or even Michael Kamen's protege Edward Shearmur names thrown into the mix.

Anne Dudley. She's the greatest female composer today in my opinion and she's done some amazing stuff. Nice to see that someone else appreciates her work. I also think she should score Neil Gaiman's "Coraline." That comes out in 2005.

I've been planning to read the book, as I have enjoyed Terry Pratchett very much so far. I only recently learned that Terry Gilliam is making a film out of it, but even without having read it, I agree that he's probably the only director for something like this (thinking of it, they should turn to him when they finally start filming The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).

Re your composer suggestions: I'm afraid I haven't heard anything by Anne Dudley yet. I'm also not too familiar with much of Kamen's output, though I'm trying to (slowly) expand in that direction. But I'm with you all the way when it comes to Davis, Du Prez and Doyle.

    HT-

Bruce Broughton would be great, as he always is. I had not even considered John Ottman, but I think he'd be a very interesting choice. He's never done an "epic" comedy before, but I'm sure he'd be up to the task. I'm not at all familiar with Shearmur's work, I'm afraid.

I'd also like to add that William Ross could do a great job with this story.

This is one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen!

Apparently somebody saw our post and got a little info-happy at the IMDb. Check it out soon, it probably won't be there very long!

I like Patrick Doyle, but Rolfe Kent (a fellow UK native) also sounds good.

HA HA HA HA!!! This is so funny and such an odd coincidence. I wonder if this is true? Would be a wonderful score if it is. What do you think James?

Yes it is. It's perfect material for him, too. I really can't wait to see how this one turns out. I want to see it now!!

And if this composer news was true.... Well, if it is true (which I doubt) it would be unbelievably good news.

I'm still waiting to hear that Alan Rickman has been cast as Crowley. He IS Crowley; anyone else (I can think of) is unacceptable. Hopefully it won't conflict with Chamber of Secrets....

Rolfe Kent is a composer I want to hear more from, I enjoyed a lot of Nurse Betty immensely.

Oh yes, and is there still no boot for Du Pres' original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles score?

Just in case you didn't know about this already: coming in October...

I'm not too familiar with Rolfe Kent's work. I liked his score to Nurse Betty, but Good Omens is very different. I also remember liking the score he did to that movie where Laura Dern was the drug addict... the title escapes me at the moment... but still, not exactly Good Omens.

But I certainly don't know enough about his work to count him out.

Still, I think Kamen would be the best choice, considering how good his work has been on the other Gilliam films he has done.

Jimbo, rent "Election". Though Kent may not be the man for the job, you will love what he did for this film (a very good one).

    Or how about Julian Nott?

I have seen Election, and I did love the score. I just utterly forgot Rolfe Kent had composed it.

Thanks for more assurance of Mr. Kent's prowess!

And Julian Nott would do very well, I think.
