    Just a quick question....

    I am trying to find out if anyone knows exactly what this older Project 3 release of Goldsmith's score represents.

    Is it a re-hash of an earlier album release, the sound seems a bit harsh at times?

    Since I own the Varese CD, what is the real difference, beyond expanded cues, or cue order that would warrant keeping it in my collection?

    Basically, I am leaning towards getting rid of it. I don't really see the need for it with the Varese release being available.

    Any other thoughts?

    Here's a small discussion about the differences between P3 and VSD: http://www.moviemusic.com/mb/Forum1/HTML/006214.html

    The Project 3 was a CD release of the original LP that was released at or near the time of the movie.

    The release versions of Planet of the Apes, in order are:

    1. Project 3 (LP) - late 60's with an LP re-release in 1978;
    2. Project 3 (CD - Same as LP) - about 1990;
    3. Intrada (CD) - about 1993, same as Project 3, added the Ape hunt track when Heston, et al, first see the apes;
    4. Varese (CD) - 1997, complete score release, includes suite from Escape From the Planet of the Apes.

    Other releases:

    Beneath the Planet of the Apes (CD) - about 1999 or 2000, limited release by Filmscore Monthly - complete score, includes album of themes and dialog that was released in 1970 on LP at time of this film.

    Conquest/Battle for the Planet of the Apes (CD) - 2001, limited release by Filmscore Monthly.

    Planet of the Apes (Remake - 2001) - Danny Elfman.

    The Project 3 CD is the same as the original LP release (although on the CD the first few notes of the Main Title are inexplicably faded in instead of beginning properly as it does on the LP.) I believe the later Intrada version (where we got to hear The Hunt for the first time) is a vastly improved version of the LP masters. At 1:47 into The Forbidden Zone, there's supposed to be some percussion, but the P3 CD makes it almost inaudible, and edits out most of it anyway. Since the Intrada and Fox versions improve on the P3 version in every conceivable way, I can't think of a single reason for hanging on to it. Unless, like me, you keep it for curiosity value
