Just found out that an expanded edition has been released. Anyone got it? What's it like? Good sound? Is it complete?

It's basically an expansion of the Capitol (?) LP. Many of the men's chorus' from the film appear on the CD.

I purchased it mainly because I've been trying to replace my LP collection with CD's. But that's beside the point, it's Ennio Morricone's signature as well as best known effort. On those grounds, I would say it's a good purchase.

    Indeedy, some of us do

Quality is fine, though I seem to remember reading that the extra cues are in mono. Can't say that bothered me.

Complete? No. But nearly. Small things are missing. The chaotic cue that ends the early scene where Angel Eyes kills the man, and the man's wife comes running in - nice cue, perfectly capturing the dizzying moment where we see the dead guy from the wife's POV as she faints. Not on there, sadly.

And the final scene where Eastwood leaves Tuco perched on the cross with the noose around his neck, only to reappear on the horizon and shoot the rope - not there. It would have been great to have the solo drumbeat - bom bom bom boddle om bom bom bom bom - you know the one I mean! - as Eastwood rides implacably away, seemingly leaving Tuco to die. I know it's just a drum beat. but it is from an important and unforgettable moment.

Nevertheless, I heartily recommend this new release. Gotta have it.

American version of the expanded CD release coming soon:

    For Immediate Release

Hollywood, CA, April 5, 2004 - Capitol Records/EMI will release an expanded
version of the soundtrack to the film "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly". 10
tracks of film score that have never been released in America will be
included, thus restoring the film score to its original length. It will be
in stores on May 18, 2004.

The soundtrack has also been 24-bit remastered and the album packaging
includes original movie art. Ennio Morricone composed the landmark film
score. The distinctive "whistle" heard in the long, tension-building scenes
with minimal dialog, became the sonic signature for the "spaghetti western"
    film genre.

The soundtrack release coincides with MGM Home Entertainment's release of
"The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" 2-DVD Collector's Edition, also in stores on
May 18. It is the third film of an epic western trilogy directed by Sergio
Leone. Released in America in 1966, it stars Clint Eastwood as the "Man With
No Name" (The Good), Eli Wallach as "Tuco" (The Ugly) and Lee Van Cleef as
    "Angel Eyes" (The Bad).

The original release of the soundtrack has been certified gold by the RIAA.

From looking at the listed American release penciled in for May, I would have to recommend that people seek out the 2001 Italian GDM release. The track listing for the GDM CD (GDM CD CLUB 7001) is identical to the newly announced American expanded edition. BUT, in the Italian release the final cue "Il Triello" appears to be longer and track 13 - "La Storia Di Un Soldato" - appears to be a different arrangement of the song:

    GDM release track listing:

    1. Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo (Titoli) 2:42
    2. Il Tramonto 1:18
    3. Sentenza 1:43
    4. Fuga a Cavallo 1:09
    5. Il Ponte Di Corde 1:55
    6. Il Forte 2:24
    7. Inseguimento 2:27
    8. Il Deserto 5:18
    9. La Carrozza Dei Fantasmi 2:11
    10. La Missione San Antonio 2:19
    11. Padre Ramirez 2:40
    12. Marcetta 2:52
    13. La Storia Di Un Soldato 5:34
    14. Il Treno Militare 1:25
    15. Fine Di Una Spia 1:16
    16. Il Bandito Monco 2:45
    17. Due Contro Cinque 3:47
    18. Marcetta Senza Speranza 1:50
    19. Morte Di Un Soldato 3:09
    20. L'Estasi Dell'Oro 3:23
    21. Il Triello 7:14

"IL Triello" features an additional 2+ minutes that is the conclusion to the stand off between Eastwood, Wallach & van Cleef and features chimes and echoing percussion/sound effects. This addition is in mono and it finishes the CD of wonderfully.

This is very interesting indeed. I also hope that they release expanded editions of Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More. The Chase in Fistful is missing some of the vocals and there are a lot of cues either missing or shortened from For A Few Dollars More.

The expanded edition is a stateside release of the disc available in Europe. It runs about 55 minutes.

Thanks for the information. Do you know if the expanded For A Few Dollars More has a better version of A Vice For Killing than the one found on the Legendary Italian Westerns CD?

Also, do you know if they have the full version of the duel at the end between Mortimer and Indio without the pipe organ. I hate the way that is spliced in there on 60 Seconds To What on the other FAFDM soundtracks I've heard. I know the pipe organ is present in the film near the beginning where Indio gets revenge on the man who put him away, but there shouldn't be a pipe organ in the final duel piece. Also, they cut the guitar buildup short on 60 Seconds To What. The guitar strums for a few seconds something like 7 or 8 times and gradually builds up to the trumpets in the film. However, on my CD, the guitar strums only 3 times for a few seconds and then cuts to the pipe organ. You really have to be familiar with how it is in the film. It sounds better there than the way it is edited on the CD I have mentioned above.

Also, any word on a more complete Fistful of Dollars soundtrack?

    Thanks.
