Okay, folks. I recently complained that, after posting my own home-made and hard-earned track titles for the Young Sherlock Holmes 2CD recording sessions boot, that some jackass cribbed my track titles and used them to create a new "film sequenced" 2CD complete score set. My only real beef was that I did it out of courtesy and fandom, and this motherf*cker is making money off of it.

Well, dear friends, this chickensh*t is at it again. If you look at http://www.ifrance.com/raresoundtracks/ and go to their Jerry Goldsmith section, you'll see that some d*ckhead has taken my recently-posted Basic Instinct track titles and used them to create new artwork for a new bootleg.

Whoever you are, have some class and post here to tell me thank you. I worked for a full day on those track titles, discerning what was what, and you just steal it.

To paraphrase Krusty the Clown, "If this is anyone but Jerry Goldsmith, you're stealing my sh*t!"

I didn't see anything at the page about selling the scores...it seems that the page just hosts scans for others to use.

Uh, yeah. But it never hurt to say thank you.

And someone is making money off the new YSH bootleg. They used my notes to resquence and recreate a whole new album.

I wan't saying it was the folks at that website. Hell, if I thought it was, I'd just email them. Gimme a little credit.

Well...they're not only using your notes without your permission, they're also using the music without permission. I think you're glad that you have the boot, so why I can understand that you'd like to be asked before someone uses your track titles, I don't think you have the right to complain.

Welcome to the very unthankful world of bootleggers. Bear, what about Bruce Broughton? I guess he can be thankful they are at least writing his name on the album.

Please excuse the sarcasm. In all seriousness, though, if you don't want your stuff all over the place, next time think about sharing it in public. Even in a cool place like this, where most posters are great people, there are plenty o' shark lurking in the deeper waters. Sometimes yuppy sharks like Lou will splash around in the shallow water, but that's it for the obvious.

Egh, anyone know if there's a cure for sarcasminitis?

I'll repeat myself... I'm not upset it happened. I just think a 'thank you' would have been nice. And Marian, I think the composers who get bootlegged deserve a 'thank you' too.

What I don't need is a few select geniuses coming out of the woodwork to tell me, essentially, "tough sh*t". Hey, wow... eureka. I understand the situation perfectly. I'm not surprised it happened... just maybe a little disappointed.

A little courtesy never killed anyone.

I know how you feel. I've seen some of my artwork displayed on websites. Hey, what can you do. When I do trades, I know that whatever I trade could and probably will be traded to someone else at some point. That's just the way it is, unfortunately. At least the website you posted about credits who did the artwork. They probably have no idea if someone else did the track titles.

The folks that did the artwork are the ones who run the website. Still, they might not know where the track titles came from. But they probably do.

On the whole, though, I am probably bitching to the wrong group of people here. After all, the score collectors I have known personally (with a very few, very clear exceptions... Dan) have been pretty stingy, terribly ungrateful people. A lot of them remind me of the Comic Collector guy on The Simpsons.

    Ah well. C'est la vie.

Does this infer the people here are nice and not stingy, then? I think this is what you mean, based on what you've said about others elsewhere.

If so, I agree. We all try and relate a little more on the human side here. Most of us try for the more friendly approach, and I am glad to be a part of it.

be pleased that someone thought enough of your track titles to use them.

I'm not sure I'd want to publicly pronounce that I'd created a bootleg though, so maybe that's why the person didn't thank you.

I have to agree with Peter in the sense that (most...yes, most) people see the internet as one big communal house where everybody shares everything. Whether it's music, divx movies, software or anything else that people want...just not bad enough to pay for (sometimes even bad enough to pay for but just don't know where to find it), there will be a demand for that something to turn up for free on the 'Net. Sure a thank you would be nice but as Peter pointed out, not too many people go out of their way to be connected to illegal activity in public.

As for bootlegs in general...everybody has their own motives. Some want to make the bucks while others simply love the music and want to have every available version or source of the music/band/composer they love.

I think the band Pennywise did the coolest thing on their site. They encouraged fans to send them mp3s of any Pennywise boots they could find and then the band simply posted them (with artwork) on their site for free. If the kids wanted the music they could have it but at least the bootleggers weren't getting paid and what are they gonna do, go to the cops and have Pennywise busted for posting their illegal bootlegs illegally?!! :-)

I love bootlegs. I don't love spending money on them because yes, I know my bands aren't getting any of it. I like the trading theory myself. I don't sell them and I (try) not to pay for them. I just want to spread the music. Which is still a crime but I have no job and I still support my bands when they have legit releases anyway.

Whatever. Anybody have any of the Warped Tour dates on CD yet? I'm looking for Ventura, CA...

    Joey

PeterK, I know you don't like this kind of messages here, but please allow me to defend myself from this misgueded and naive acusations.

Just as a side note, Big Beer (aka FOREIGNERS ARE STUPID), I was banned from FSM board by Joe Rixman just because he was afraid that I could reveal a secret he told me once when we become pals, after he send me an e-mail saying how he like my humour and my acid tirades.
After that he proclaimed himself as the "sheriff" (sic) and another member menaced to reveal his secret on the board (for which he was IMEDIATELLY banned), and then he came after me and now finally managed to make me silent (like if I would ever reveal his "secret" in the first place - must be dificult to live in fear). This is only the resumed story - so feel free to e-mail me if you want to know the complete version (but drop the F*** word you use to put on those messages you send me, ok?)

Now, you was kicked out of the FSM board by its own members, remember? So, what's your excuse?

Anyway, I could go back to that forum anytime if I really want to. I think even someone like you can learn how to change your own IP number...

People like to complain about how PeterK handle things over here, and even if I disagree with him sometimes, I can't deny he is a quite coherent moderator, not moved by racist thoughts, prejudice or personal vendettas.

BTW Beer, I had a stupenduous week too, thanks for asking...

Andre--sorry to hear of your ousting from FSM. Where is Amnesty International when you need them? The idea that ANYBODY get axed from an on-line board, private or not, for just saying stuff will always strike me as reprehensible, add political reasons and it's even more offensive.

Yeah Lou, can you believe it? I was banned basicly because I sometimes write: "Hanzimmer sucks!" and then people like The Big Beer start to say all kinds of nasty things hidden behind an offensive handle and, when you fight back, you get banned by some racist moderator...

The FSM board has been full of a bunch of crap lately. Most of it seemed to start when the "raspy" Daniel2 returned.

It's too bad André was banned, since I was highly amused by ability to find "Flame Warriors" that fit some people at FSM so well.

You know Jonathan, the real reason behind the FSM's board deterioration was that FOREIGNERS ARE STUPID character (we all know who was behind it) and the others that poped in after him.
Their non-stop offensive attacks on me were made to make me look nasty to the naive member's eyes - much to the joy of Joe Rixman, since that was the pretext he was looking for to ban me for good.

FOREIGNERS ARE STUPID is still free to post on that board. PeterK banned him the moment he tried to register here... So, by this you can notice the sick people that are in charge of FSM board now.

But considering the kind of people that send me their support (Timmer, Jonathan, Marian, Dan Hobgood, JJH, Nicolai Zwar, Rochelle, etc) and the kind of freaks that "hate me" (Big Beer, ThorHaga, Ron Pullman, Joe Rixman, etc), all I can say is that I obviously did something right!

    Cheers to you all!

If you fellas are done congratulating each other, I'd like to (again) restate that the Foreigners Are Stupid handle from the FSM board is not me. Despite all out disagreements, I have grown pretty f*cking weary of this accusation. As far as I can tell FAS's ip address is not even remotely close to mine. Where is your proof, jackass? If you've got some, I'd love to see it. Until then, you can stop slandering me here.

That is, unless you want kicked off this board, too. I'll make it my life's mission to do so unless you cut this sh*t out.

And another little fact you are ignoring is that FSM never kicked me out. I am still posting there, even today.

PeterK... this is all so tiresome. And it was so nice around here when Lux was too busy fighting for his life in the FSM board to harass people here. Why don't you just do what you've been itching to do all along? I'm all for personal freedom, but this guy is publicly slandering me and lying through his teeth. I think that violates even the most liberal of message board rulebooks.

And to the Lou Goldbergs out there... yeah, go ahead and chortle into your mochas and laptops. It's all fun and games when it's not you being harassed.
