    Hey,

Not exactly a huge fan of Media Ventures, but I loved the movie SHREK and the score was really cool (especially the "Escape from the Castle" sequence, with the background techno beat and the orchestral theme). Anyway, as I was listening to an excerpt from the only thus-released score track, "True Love's First Kiss", available on the song compilation, I recognized the theme from somewhere.

As I searched in my memory, I realized that this theme (2 segments of four notes each) was the theme from DEEP BLUE SEA! Which, as you know, was composed by Trevor Rabin, another Media Ventures slave.

    Anyone notice that?

Talk about Horner copying himself... this is exactly the same, only with two "different" composers.

You are not the only one that noticed themes from other scores used in Shrek. The love theme in Shrek (like when the princess is singing before she kills the bird) to me sounds exactly the same as the love theme from "Army of Darkness" which was composed by Joseph LoDuca, in fact SHrek's score borrows a heak of a lot from "Army" if I remember correctly.

That's funny; to me, Fiona's theme sounds a lot like Danny Elfman's "Sommersby".

Similiar, but not enough for me to get mad. I've listened to Deep Blue Sea score quite a bit, and when Shrek came out that single mp3 a ton. I noticed the similarities, but it was nothing enough to get me mad. I STILL want that full score release, damnit!

I'm familiar with Deep Blue Sea, Army of Darkness, and Sommersby and would have to disagree. I've listened to the full score many times and don't find that it copies anything directly. In it's entirety, it's a terrific piece of work.

Does anyone know why this film has not had a score release?

Ouch. Trevor wouldn't like it if he heard that. He's never worked for Media Ventures. He's worked WITH them a few times, but never FOR them (like Zimmer, Gregson-Williams, Powell, Rona, etc. etc. do.)

In my interiew with Rabin, he talks about it. (Towards the bottom.)

Looking at the success of the film itself, I think there could be a score coming up. Perhaps an isolated score in the DVD.

I was listening to Army of Darkness today and it greatly reminded me of Shrek. I think of Shrek's score as "Army of Darkness 2" sort of. I would love to make an Amry/Shrek CD combining them. I recommend Army of Darkness by Joseph LoDuca and Danny Elfman to lovers of the quite pretty "Shrek" score becuase it's similar in many ways- including style of score (they're both kind of an action-packed, romantic score and a bit Irish sounding as well) and the orcastrations.

    Oooh, sounds painfull!

I really liked the score in the film, & would very much like to have a full release. In the film, I didn't really like the songs, though. They didn't seem very well integrated, & were kind of out of place.

Not at all, I agree. The songs in Shrek almost ruined the entire film and were painfully out of place. I would have preferred the entire film's music to be score only. Especially the song in the beginning, which was used in the film Mystery Men two years ago!

Wow! Glad I'm not the only one who was scratching my head at the beginning of SHREK, thinking, "Gee! I had no idea Danny Elfman was scoring this movie!"
