Meanwhile, Zap2it's report includes an interesting quote from Rick Berman concerning the scoring of the new series, indicating it may break from traditional orchestration: "We're hopefully going to be using a little bit more contemporary kind of music. It's not all of a sudden that the show is going to be scored with electric guitars. It's going to be a little hipper, I think."

If the show is at all interesting, I can probably forgive "hipper" music. Although such a self conscious attitude about ... it'll have to sort itself out.

I'm okay with a semi-techno approach, but if the music becomes cheesy like Andromeda or any of those other retarded shows, I'll have make an appointment with Mr. Berman. Let's hope this doesn't keep Jerry from being involved w/ the main theme.

Uh-oh!
I'm not against semi-techno approaches per se - but for Trek?? I suddenly had to think of Spaceballs...

It doesn't need to be "hipper", just real music instead of that droning sound-wash that Berman thinks is so effective as underscore. This man just doesn't get it.posted 07-18-2001 09:17 AM PT (US)

Personally speaking, I don't really care one way or another what Berman does anymore. But, what I find funny in all of this is the fact (if these rumors are true) each one of these rumors continues to drive away more and more of the fans of the franchise. To all of that, I say let Berman do his crap, and when no one is around watching it, he can finally realize his way, is not necessarily the best way!

Oh well, nothing will stop me from at the very least tuning in to watch the pilot episode!

I really could care less. I'm not going to be watching the show. It would be nice to have another Jerry theme, though.

Straight from TrekWebby comes the official declaration from the horse's mouth:"We decided to make the music hipper for this new Star Trek series," said Rick Berman, "so we had to hire someone with that kind of experience, but who was also very talented at coming up with great, classic themes. In perspective, the only logical choice was to hire Evan Chen."
;)
Smile, this is Star Trek, and it's going to hell.

GOOD GOD! that's the suckiest news ever!
What a sad day for music lover. BOOOO BOOOO BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Evan Chen. What? Did they even hear what he did for Babylon: Crusade series?
Sorry if I'm a bit presumptuous but
THIS WILL BE A TOTAL BOMB!!!!

I hope so. Evan Chen as the LOGICAL CHOICE? If they want a hipper sound, with some approachability behind it, why not try Media Venture? Maybe Jeff Rona could do something with the sound design. Or John Van Tongeren could score some episode. Evan Chen is not the first or last person I could think off to come up with a "hipper sound"

It's probably best if Jerry Goldsmith stays well clear of this troubled series!Dean.

I've watched the new 30-second TV spot about 50 times... I'm hooked. Regardless of the music, I have a feeling this show will be *very* good. Of course, I'm 20 years old, don't mind change, and don't get bent out of shape over goofy technicalities. As for the music? Well, if the show turns out to be as good as I'm thinking it will be, well, the music aspect will fall into place (let's hope).By the way, I think what's really captured me about this show (story-wise) is that it's a Star Trek that's not too far off. I mean, it's exciting to think that these adventures take place only a generation away. And the humor and sex appeal make it even more tangible. Ahhhhh, I can't wait. It's gonna rock.

Not a joke... I'm truly excited about the show. Of course, this is coming from a kid who has loved every incarnation of "Star Trek" from TOS, to the TOS animated show, then of course TNG, DS9, VOY, all the feature films. I even thoroughly enjoy Shatner's ST5. I'm big into the games as well. Call me a trekkie or whatever... Brian has his Final Fantasy obsession, this is mine (though I'm not nearly as intense as Brian).
Perhaps I'm a bit biased, but initially I wasn't excited about the show. After seeing the teaser promo, I'm pumped.

Yeah, so what if I have my "Final Fantasy"
Not as intense, don't know about that, you sounded like you were going to explode on the phone a few minutes ago bro

I think this show is going to kick major ass. As a mild "Trek" fan, I like most new "Trek" series, and like "Voyager", I was hooked the second I saw the TV spots.
We all hope Jerry scores it and I am sure he will, Berman will not mess up the "Trek" music, because if he did, he'd have more hate letters than he could count.
