I've constructed a poll about some John Williams CDs that I'm interested in buying. I've listened to the sound clips, I've read the reviews but I want more opinion!

I'd love it if you'd give it a click. (The poll hosting is free but there's some advertising on the poll summary page. Sorry.)

    The titles in question are:

    Amistad
    Angela's Ashes (Decca)
    The Cowboys
    The Eiger Sanction
    Far and Away
    The Patriot
    Penelope
    Presumed Innocent
    The River
    Sabrina
    Saving Private Ryan
    Sleepers
    Stanley and Iris
    Stepmom

Having just returned from seeing Williams perform live at the Hollywood Bowl, his music is definitely on the forefront of my mind. While I know this won't be much help, my only words of advice are: Get them all. Do not hesitate. Just do it.

Jeron, since you were just at the concert, and heard the MILLENIUM piece in its entirety, do you agree with me in saying that the similarities between the 2nd Movement of that piece and the main theme to THE PATRIOT are just a little too much to be coincidence?

IMHO A.I. is one of Williams' best of the past five years, if not THE best... Well, if not that it's probably my favorite

It wasn't the entire piece, just three selections of it.

Now while I know this question was towards Jeron, I will be a pushy (wanna be) Texan and give my opinon anyways. Yes, there were some sections, very similar to the Patriot...not the same, but similar in style and orchestrations. Yet, there was one scene, the ocean and cliff scene, that had a few seconds borred from Far and Away.

Oh yea, get them all. With Williams you can never go wrong.

(I hate this "flood control thingie")

I think the best in that selection are (in alphabetical order) Amistad, The Cowboys, The Eiger Sanction, Far and Away and Sleepers, though all of those that I know (I don't yet know ALL of them myself) have at least some good parts.

From that selection, I'd recommend getting Cowboys first. A great americana score, that shines through on the first CD of the expanded Superman release.

...though, as I have said elsewhere, I'm beginning to suspect that I just don't enjoy some of the most recent Williams scores that much is the baaad sound quality.

NP: Love's Labour's Lost (Patrick Doyle)

Please, can somebody help me to enjoy Presumed Innocent?

I try really hard to like it, but it ultimately bores me to death.

    That's the SECOND one!

Dave: I also found it rather boring and haven't played it very often yet, but at least the main title is nice.

NP: Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves (Michael Kamen)

I know it's John Williams...but...if it bores you, the simple answer is don't listen to it. Presumed Innocent is rather dark for a score...probably not something your average listener returns to regularly...

(But just don't say "it sucks", because it's not your cup of tea--There's plenty of good stuff out there.)

I'm a big John Williams fan, (perhaps the biggest ever...arguably), but I also do not listen much to Presumed Innocent. It is a very dark, subdued score, written in a style I do not appreciate too much. In fact, the other score, written very similarly (in style and orchestrations) is The Accidental Tourist, and I don't like that score too much either.

Don't get me wrong, they are both very well written scores ( I mean, it's John Williams after all), it's just I don't like them too much and hardly listen to them.

That's me and my two cents...

    I say forget Williams.

Get something by Herrmann or Thomas Newman instead.

This is one of those scores with a nice title theme, and nothing else of real interest. Varese or somebody should collect these and put them out on compilation CDs...
