Haven't seen it, but if you aren't depressed, then good. Why do I say this? Well, I was pretty much expecting you to be. EVERY single review I have read (save that of Ebert's, however he tends to love every animated film, CGI or hand drawn), even the positive ones, complained about the simple story and trite dialogue. It doesn't sound like opinions when this many people say the same thing, it sounds like facts. I'm hoping to see the film soon and judge for myself, but I can't say my expectations are too high now. At least the visuals will be superb and Goldenthal's score rocks.

I just saw it last night. I truly thought the story had some excellent points even though it does have a "been there, done that" feel in places. And yes, the dialogue could've been better at times- however the visuals are fairly stunning and with the basic story coupled with the STUNNING score by Elliot Goldenthal- this is one Sci-Fi film that, despite its shortcomings, manages to satisfy and be downright haunting! Half the reason it is haunting, half of why the film works is Goldenthal's score. Without it, or in the hands of any other composer, the film would not have been the same. It truly is an entertaining film I would like to see again.

The movie was interesting to look at. But that's about it. Sometimes the faces on the characters were much more expressive than those of most real actors. The drawings were great. The sound design was very good. Goldenthal's music fit is perfectly (though I find it very annoying on CD).

But for all it's "looks", the movie was total zero when it comes to new or original content. Most of the story was just a boring, badly written and under-developped screenplay which only served as an excuse to have great animation.

So if you don't care about plots and stories, go see it. But if you want a good script, stay away from this one.
And if you didn't appreciate Goldenthal's score on CD, go see the movie. You might change your mind.

I don't know anything about the Final Fantasy games, but I did enjoy the movie, despite the below-average writing. It's a great visual-audio feast. I wouldn't mind a second FF film.

stunning movie on many levels from music to sound.

have to disagree with wistiti though. I didn't think any of the "actors" came anywhere close to expressing real human emotion.
But let's be honest, that animation was simply amazing.

    some nice humor.

If any parents are reading this:

Don't take your kids to see this movie. The s-word is bandied abotu a few times. If you do, make sure they shut the f*** up during the film.

I just got back from seeing a late showing of Final Fantasy and...

I did not love it but I did in fact dig it. It is not a great movie, but it was an above-average anime type film with some amazing visuals. It IS worth seeing, and it is decent. Although I found it tiresome in many points, overall it was pretty good and a sight to see. This is the future, so go see it.(They will never beat a real human but it was cool anyways.)

The score fit fine and I have no beefs with it. Good all around score.

The score was very good for the film and had some truly good moments. A good score. I now like the film more after thinking about it. Go see it.

Did we actually see the same movie?

I liked the movie a lot. The animation was great, yet not as well done as I expected from the previews. Some scenes were so life like you had problems believing it was an animated movie, others however did not have that effect and attention to detail.

Yet it was a super film, miles above and beyond the Laura Croft crapp we got dished earlier this year.

Critical reviews are never facts, but always opinions. A fact is that the movie was computer generated images. To say the story was simple is not a fact...it's an opinion. To a three year old the story would not be simple, to an 80 year old it might.

If the majority opinion at anyone time would establish the fact about a movie, then Fantasia would still be considered an aweful mess (as it was during its premiere time).

In conclusion, I guess what I'm saying is that often what seems to be a fact is nothing else but opinion. In fact, facts are hard to come by, opinions are all over the place.

    Off to see it again...fantastic!

The excellent visuals and score aside...the movie is a top-notch sci-fi experience. Far more engaging than A.I....one of the best I've seen this year.

Side note...the teaser for Black Hawk Down played in front of it. Looks excellent...though I don't know if Zimmer's style is suited for it. Neither a Thin Red Line or his standard action flare seem to fit...but who knows.

And by "forever", you mean the 2 months it's been since TOWN AND COUNTRY was in theaters, right?

Also, while the movie isn't doing very well at the box office (so far), I think it will have a slow burn rate that will, in the end, allow it to recoup its costs and probably make a bit of a profit.

Remember - this weekend everyone went to go see LEGALLY BLONDE because their girlfriends had to suffer through SCARY MOVIE 2 last week - and it's payback time!

That's true Dan, I forgot about Town and Country, which I just a few weeks ago read was actually the biggest bomb of all time. Cost somewhere around $90 million and grossed $5? Crazy... Anyway, I agree that the burn out rate might be somewhat slow, but I'm guessing the film won't gross anywhere over $30-35 million.

There is no doubt in my mind that FF will make its money back. Between home video and the foreign markets, it will recoup.

Those producers aren't morons. Just watch and wait.

The BLACK HAWK DOWN preview did get my interest and I will be seeing it when it comes out. The Spider Man preview made me laugh and I will probably not see that one.

Has anyone here seen FF a second time? Was it still interesting and worth seeing a 2nd time? I was rather bored in some parts but I am thinking of seeing it again in order to make others go with me...is it worth it?

I think it's worth it for the startling images alone.

Too bad the story had to suffer in comparison. oh well.

    Worth it? One word:

    Hardly.

What a terrible piece of trash this film was. So disappointing, I can't even start to describe. If nice visuals are enough to hold you through a film with an extremely weak and uninteresting story, not to mention just about every cliche in the book, see it. Even so, the animation IMO doesn't make it worth seeing. There were one or two moments of awe, but otherwise it has all been done before, and MUCH MUCH better. The dialogue was atrocious, I cringed at just about every word every character muttered. Though there were some pretty good actors casted, they really did a pretty mediocre job, but again this could be blamed on the weak script. Great score by Goldenthal, but it couldn't save this film if it were the best score of the century. I saw it with about five other friends, all who have different tastes... How many of them liked it? 0.... One friend, who has played and beat every one of the video games and was looking forward to this movie for quite a while, fell asleep 3-4 times. It's BAD, BAD sci-fi and in all honesty crono, I don't know how in hell you cannot be disappointed after waiting 10 years or so...

Hey everyone views things differently than the other. He saw a movie he liked and is happy with it.

I myself will probably wait until video unless my son drags me to see it. A nice score by Goldenthal, nothing new from him but still good.
