So far from what I've heard... and I know I still haven't heard PLANET OF THE APES or any of the Fall and Winter scores but here are my top five of 2001 so far.

    - A.I. (John Williams)
    - ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE (James Newton Howard)
    - FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN (Elliot Goldenthal)
    - PAVILION OF WOMEN (Conrad Pope)
    - THE MUMMY RETURNS (Alan Silvestri)

    What are yours?

You're all forgetting THE LORD OF THE RINGS!

Good call Dan...honestly, Potter sounds like Williams is trying to rip off Danny Elfman...but I'm sure it will be good regardless. However, I'd stake money that Lord of the Rings will be the superior score.

So far in no real order...

    1. The Caveman's Valentine (Blanchard)
    2. A.I. (Williams)
    3. The Mummy Returns (Silvestri)--but more in the theater, the CD is just not very interesting.

Have not heard--Atlantis, Final Fantasy yet.

Funny enough, mine is almost identical to the original poster's.

    A.I. (John Williams)
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (Elliot Goldenthal)
    The Mummy Returns (Alan Silvestri)
    Pavilion Of Women (Conrad Pope)
    Pearl Harbor (Hans Zimmer

I'd also list Atlantis and Jurassic Park III though, just haven't heard them enough yet!

So far, I only have three:
    Atlantis-Howard
    Mummy Returns-Silvestri
    Enemy at the Gates-Horner

Not a very impressive year, score-wise and Shore's recent scores do not fill me with confidence that he can do justice to Lord of the Rings.

MattStar, you mention that it wasn't a very impressive year, yet Enemy at the Gates was on your top 3... Have you heard many of the scores released this year? Enemy at the Gates shouldn't make anybody's list, IMO. I enjoyed it somewhat, and it had some absolutely incredible moments, but too much old material thrown on and, on top of that, it was too long and not a very pleasent listening experience as a whole. I can mention SO many scores that were better than EATG (and TRUST ME, I am an avid Horner fan)

    Hasta,
As a matter of fact, I have heard a lot of scores this year, I work at a movie theatre and I have been thoroughly unimpressed with the scores of this year (and the movies also). So, Enemy goes on my list so far, because like you I thought it had some incredible moments in the Horner-stylistic vein. I admit that Enemy may be pushed off my list later on (I'm looking forward to Planet of the Apes and Harry Potter) but for now its there.

A.I. is the first Williams score in over a decade that I'm actually drawn to listen to repeatedly. Ironically, I wasn't particularly impressed by its effect on screen nor, as it would turn out, by its sequencing on CD, but it does provide for a very pleasing listen (with a track moved here, and a track moved there).

FINAL FANTASY turns out to be a marvellous synthesis of everything we've heard from Goldenthal before, particularly BATMAN BEYOND and SPHERE. And, since I can't begrudge a composer who can crank out these sort of ear-popping fortissimos, I'd have to say this is my favourite so far. Track 16 leaves me floating. It's magic.

THE SCORE: Though I've become a little weary of the use of faux jazz in film scoring...Shore's approach, as usual, rises above the predictable and mundane.

THE MUMMY RETURNS: Obnoxious Movie, obnoxious score.

JURASSIC PARK III: It's hard to jump on a train that's moving as fast as this one. Taken in bits and pieces, there some real entertainment value in the score...but, when heard head to tail, it becomes one big sonorous blur. I do appreciate Mr. Davis' refernece to Max Steiner's King Kong though...

ALONG CAME A SPIDER: Workhorse Goldsmith material. Nothing bad but nothing great for yet another bad film to add to his already ample list of bad film scoring assignments.

POTA: I expect the worst from Elfman. In fact, I expect the worst of Burton as well (although I'd find it hard to beleive he could make anything quite as awful as SLEEPY HOLLOW. Oops, I forgot about MARS ATTACKS).

I don't buy anything by Horner anymore, so ENEMY AT THE GATES is out and I've never heard a Newton Howard score I liked so I won't even try to guess at the sort of milky-toast heights of blandness he's managed to reach with ATLANTIS.

I do look forward to Williams' Harry Potter and, of course, Shore's LOTR. Goldsmith's missed the summer boat and anything of worthwhile mention to appear in the fall hasn't got his name attached to it. Whither a giant.

I guess it makes sense that the morbid and bland AI score tops your list. After reading your post I thought heard the foreboding resonance of a thunderstorm floating overhead.

But I suppose it is good not to set your expectations too high. OH well....

The cues I've been addticted to and listen to more than any other track on the album are:

10 "The Road Crossing to Stalingrad" from Enemy at the Gates
This 15 min track is pretty good, emotional, epic, tragic, heroic all in one.

09 "The Exchange" from The Claim
A hauntingly beautiful theme featuring a wordless female volcal, this track just about sums up the whole CD.

08 "Let My Home Be My Gallows" from Hannibal
Very serious and dramtic cue by Hans Zimmer, with a haunting melody. Perfect from when I'm in that dark poetic mood. If only Anthony Hopkins would shut up.

    07 "Attack" from Pearl Harbor
Agian, serious and dramtic,. Keeps you focused on the story.

    06 "Now" from Caveman's Valentine
A very romatic and haunting theme on piano, this has to be Blanchards best cue.

05 "A Mircale" from The Mexican
Ahh the choir and featured female volcalist, with Silvestri's romantic theme. Gimmie more!

    04 "Finale" from The Dish
While being split into 3 tracks on the CD, this pretty much is one long cue for the finale of the movie summing up every thing about the whole score.

03 "Just Do It" from Atlantis
After a blast of action, the music becomes almost religious. Big , Epic, Powerful!

02 "Vienna's Death" from The Mist of Avalon
Epic, Sweeping , Tragic, Powerful, Celtic!
And to top it off, it was composed for TV!

01 "Invasion" from Pavilion of Women
    Well this is it, the number one cue of the year so far. Also the score is the number one score. Tragic, Emotional, Heroic. The choir will be sure to send shivers down your spine. I really got into this cue once, and almost shed a tear. But don't tell nobody ok? ;}
