The jury is in and the winners are:Horner and Zimmer. By far the best composer in this period is Horner. His thought-provoking and stimulating original scores are superior and Zimmer's highly innovative use of synth drums is exciting. Ranking amongst the best composers of the century. From the shocklingly good Pelican Brief score to the top notch score for Enemy at the Gates. He can't be beat. A solid composer. "Innovative and original." Take care, JW.

Hmmmwhat about Williams' brilliant scores for JURASSIC PARK, SCHINDLER'S LIST, JFK, BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY, 7 YEARS IN TIBET, and ANGELA'S ASHES? I thought these would put him in the running for this as well. And I think Elfman may end up being in this clas, too, since he began in 1985 and has helped shap the film music world each year since then.

Hey now, as much as I am a huge Zimmer fan, I wouldn't dare try to make the claim that he's the most innovative and original (from 85 to y2k)... Nor pick Horner. Horner's dead now, not physically, but only in term of aesthetics. Zimmer has his good and bad but he always try something new. I'm not a Williams fan but I like Goldsmith a whole lot. If I were to rank Goldsmith and Zimmer on a Meritocracy, Goldsmith win, but on a pure enjoyment factor of innovative styles and original, Zimmer rules.

I rank John Williams the best with a six-way tie between JNH, Burwell, Poledouris, Silvestri, Goldsmith, and Elfman.Horner makes emotionally good music, but intellectually, it's dog doo.

Come Come gentelman now Elfman has been doing fine for a few years at the begining of the 90's and the end of the 80's. But the two people who have been writting best and most entertaining music for all of those years are theses three composers. John Williams, James Horner, And Jerry Goldsmith but the two who are the best are Williams and then Goldsmith.NP: Masada complete

I'd have to say Danny Elfman and Jerry Goldsmith are the best composers durring this era of 1985-2000.

I vote Jon Bon Jovi and Eminem.
I'd maybe put Beethoven third if he was still alive, but it's there that it gets hazy.
