    Hey all,

And the composer to score the new Ron Howard film is....

    James Horner

But we all saw this coming right?

Well, if any director is going to push Horner to his creative limits, it's Ron Howard *cough*... Silence... Awkward silence...

James Horner rehashes his score, his critics rehash their arguments.

Does anyone else see the irony, here?

    I see the irony!

I wish I didn't have to say that, too! But I do! James Horner is a soulless hack, and I have the music to prove it.

Look, I don't think James Horner is either soulless, or a hack....Not based on his previous work. But crimony, I don't throw myself in front of that particular tank....

I'd suggest that--at worst--he may be "lost"...but not from any point which he could not return.

The difficulty in this is, in some circles--like this one, namely--Horner's output seem to have inextricably alienated some listeners. I can't, as some, make a generalization about a composer's entire body of work, and his future output, because, for me, every work is something new. I've been disappointed by some composers whose work on the whole I enjoy, and surprised by some composers of my less-preferred scores.

So, <shrug>, whattya do? Don't contribute to the thrash, I suppose. (And that's all I have to say about that...)

Was there any doubt? Well I say yes, I thought Ron Howard would go with Hans Zimmer on this one since they did do Backdraft and it would be a nice change of pace. If it's a score like Cocoon then that's a good thing.

In todays British Mail on Sunday it is reported that soprano Charlotte Church
features extensively in Horners score. It quotes Horner as saying he wrote the score with her in mind. Also goes on to say that she sings the haunting melody and is the voice behind the whole movie.

Already its being tipped for an Oscar nod.
We shall see or is that hear?

As much as I do love Horner, and still consider him one of my favorite composers, he's really gotten to the point where I can honestly say I just shrug my head when a new score of his comes out. Fact is I know what I'll be getting, and it'll be something I've heard a million times before. Now I hope he'll pull off something special, but it ain't likely.

Let's see, James Horner + Charlotte Church... hmmm... wonder which label will release this soundtrack...

In the end, it's like many other composers: depends on tastes. I'm not tired of Horner.
I know what I'll be getting, but I still look forward to a Horner score. At least I know I'll get a good listening experience. (even if sometimes I have to force myself into forgetting Horner's past scores and much of the classical repertoire)

Hasta, how DOES one shrug one's head? I've tried it and my eyes pop and my ears move.

A new Horner/ Howard collaboration? It'll probably be as good as their other ones, no better, no worse, just the same. But let's hedge our bets for now.

    I'm a talented freak.

Saw the trailer when viewing The Last Castle today (a good film I might add, especially for Goldsmith), and I'd have to say I'm pretty pumped for the film. I absolutely love Connely, and of course Russell Crowe will pull through; and if advanced screening reviews are any indication, then it will be another oscar worthy performance. Ron Howard disappointed my greatly with The Grinch, but I have high hopes for this one regardless. Hopefully it'll provide Horner w/some needed inspiration.

This would be too risky a gamble if one were to say that he won't reuse one or any of them. The probability of him reusing those and adding some Legends of the Fall or Spitfire Grill is too high.
