As a big fan of Jarre, I'd almost recommend anything by him, but I haven't played this in a while and need to to refresh my memory of it before I say anything about it pro or con here. That in itself may suggest that it hasn't made that big an impression on me or is a score I don't play often, but it wouldn't be accurate to make that conclusion. As a film about Nazi generals, one of whom is a killer, the main theme is a kind of off-kilter march.

I just recorded Is Paris Burning? for someone and you could say that most Jarre scores either feature a waltz or a march (or sometimes both).

Doesn't Mad Max III count as an action score?! I'd be suprised if you ain't got this one Tim, it's fabulous....shame about the insipid song inclusions courtesy of the screaching Tina Turnip!

Jarre has done a number of action scores:

Island at the Top of the World
    Shadow of the Wolf
    Red Sun
    Mad Max 3
    The Train
    Crossed Swords
whatever that Roger Moore/Lee Marvin movie is with Devil in the title
    etc.

I still haven't re-played Night of the Generals, sorry.

Is that the one where he mixes an Italian or French style with a Japanese one? I think I have a suite re-recording on the Essential Jarre comp.

Sorry, not every one of those was released, then some only on LP, then maybe some are OOP. And I forgot to put The Professionals on that list too.

In any case, I found my copy of Night of the Generals and am going to play it shortly and get back to you.

    Played Night of the Generals.....

It has a good German march, a neat neurotic waltz, a love theme (with piano like The Blue Max), and a brass fanfare over a drum roll. The key motif for the score is the 5-notes heard in the waltz--it shows up in every other cue throughout the score. I like it but a good version of the thing is all you need, it does get tiresome after 40 minutes.

I was very fond of this strange film but the score (which I just finished playing minutes ago) striked me as just so-so, ok to get if you find it cheap, but otherwise I'd be chasing after other Jarre like the Chapter III Grand Prix/Ryan's Daughter or Red Sun.

The neurotic waltz theme always made me think of merry-go-round music gone horribly wrong. At one job where I worked, I almost drove the other staffers into a frenzy because of it. I've always loved the German march from Night Of The Generals. As you say, Lou, if you can get it cheap, go for it. And then you can make an excellent suite from it.
And the Roger Moore/Lee Marvin film you were thinking of is Shout At The Devil. The album even has old Lee singing a tune or two.

I remembered it was Shout at the Devil but didn't post it.

I did love that crazy waltz from NOTG but I think it's driving me crazy...

Tim--While I like the theme and action music in Red Sun there are a few cues for electronics and percussion that you might not go for as much, just so that you know in advance....

A couple more action scores by Jarre: "The Man Who Would Be King" and "Villa Rides." No full-score CD release of "Villa Rides," but it appears on a number of compilation CDs, including one conducted by Jarre. I'm not sure if "The Man Who Would Be King" has ever been released on CD (I have the LP), but a short "suite" from it also appears on a Jarre-conducted compilation.

It was released a few years back on CD by the (now sadly defunct) Bay Cities label, so it's out-of-print. However, I'm sure there are a few copies still floating around if you look hard enough.

Awww... I like those songs, particularly the closing one.

All together now (just for Timmer):

    "We don't need another heeero
We don't need to know the waaay home
All we want is life beyooo-ond
    Thunderdome."
