CDs he has highly recommmended and which I own because (at least in part) of his recommendation:

    The Claim
    Wonderland
    What Dreams May Come Rejected
    Ben Hur
    and now:
    The Portrait Of A Lady

There might be more (The Cell, perhaps?), but those are what come to mind at the moment. Anyway I found that all of those were excellent. Actually, it's the last one on there that prompted this post.
So anyhoo, thanks again to JJ for his recommendations.

NP: The Portrait Of A Lady, Kilar *****

...Listen JJ because you bought them...?

I mean...what does that say about you? It just that...before you know it's...buy some Eric Serra, buy some Hans Zimmer, buy the White Album, buy some fertilizer, buy a timing device, snag a couple low-yield nuclear warheads....

    thank you, thank you.
I'm always glad to hear that someone has the guts to take a chance and try to hear what I hear in music.

NOTE: I am not a paid endorser, but I should be.

    now, on to The Cell.

this is what I thought was the very best score of last year. certainly the most original anyway. but it makes a very challenging listening experience. My recommendation is that you watch the film first and then decide. It's a pretty good film, too.

More of JJ's recommendations for John Dunham:

    Harmonielehre, by John Adams

    John Adams' Violin Concerto

Wojciech Kilar: Film Music. Shaun has this one, and he thinks it's awesome. So do I.

George Templeton Strong, Symphony No. 2. that's a Naxos.com webpage.

eh, that's all for now. I gotta run.

Recomendations by JJ which I followed/intend to follow:

    All of Carter Burwell's scores
    Sunshine (Maurice Jarre)

and Ben-Hur is still on the top of my next shopping list...once exams are over.

Now enough before he gets all airy-fairy. Let's insult him a little shall we?

Always feel free to insult me.

    Let me recommend some Zimmer:

Thin Red Line and Beyond Rangoon.

    JJ Recommends James Horner:

    In Country
    Fields of Dreams
    The Rocketeer
    Sneakers
Star Trek Dos: The Wrath of El Khano

    Ass!

Sneakers is probably Horner's best. Rather reminiscent of Glass in some passages, but still genuine Horner (in the positive sense).

NP: Anton Bruckner: Symphony #8 (Münchner Philharmoniker, Sergiu Celibidache)

I'd be interested in hearing what Philip Glass stuff he ripped off.

JJ, have I bought anything based on something you recommended? I can't remember.

Don't know 'bout any Glass, but by some accounts there's Beethoven in Sneakers.

Beethoven? Must have missed that. The "background" of one of the later tracks is very similar to parts of Glass' Glassworks (several parts of which are very similar to Glass' own Koyaanisqatsi).

    NP: Spaceballs (John Morris)
