Hey, I'm not really a huge James Bond fan, but I've heard many suggestions on this board about what Bond scores to own. I'd like to know the quintessential Bond scores to buy. I'm familiar with Barry's work on DANCES WITH WOLVES and INDECENT PROPOSAL and OUT OF AFRICA, but that's about it. I thought though someone had mentioned a David Arnold effort on one of the Bond films as being very good. I seem to get the impression that Serra's efforts were not that applauded. Someone also mentioned a Bond compilation album to get, but I can't remember what disc it actually was. Suggestions?

Bond compilation?...James Bond 30th Anniversary Limited Edition 2 CD set!Score?...The Living Daylights...excellent!!!
..earlier Bond's are better but not well presented on soundtrack! If there was a complete score of it, I would have no reservations in saying that On Her Majesty's Secret Service was the end all and be all of Bond scores!

Goldfinger. Definitely Goldfinger. Classic.(Though it doesn't really have the "007" theme on it...that "chase" music...)

I've always liked OCTOPUSSY and A VIEW TO A KILL in particular; these two and the expanded LIVING DAYLIGHTS get a lot more play than GOLDFINGER or THUNDERBALL. By contrast, I hardly ever play FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, and I only have the DR NO disc for completism purposes...NP: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S / ARABESQUE (Henry Mancini)

Favorite "Bond" scores have been TND and TWINE. Can't wait for Arnold's next....

Well whatever it is, it is NOT Goldeneye that score sucks. TND is pretty good I haven't heard much of Barry's efforts yet.Jz

A delayed response, but I wanted to thank you all for your suggestions. I actually picked up the special edition of TOMMOROW NEVER DIES and really liked it. Does Arnold keep up with his following score to THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH? I haven't forgot about THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, either. I'll most definitely be picking that one up as well. Once again, thanks guys.

I did happen to like Arnold's work on TWINE, more than most people seem to. His action cues are first rate, especially a snow chase sequence and the 10-minute powerhouse "Submarine" cue which I listened to repeatedly after the albumm first came out. Some might think it goes overboard on the volume levels, but it still makes sense musically, the drum loops are excellent, and under it all are some really amazingly brutal brass parts. Arnold's theme song is nicely interpolated throughout. The softer cues, though, lag a bit. On the whole, Arnold's Bond scores are the most fun to listen after Barry's, who's Bond music will always be king in my book.
