I've noticed that not too many people have been talking about a film that is just loaded with music! Namely, MOULIN ROUGE.

I enjoyed how the songs and score meshed together, and it was nearly constant throughout the entire film..... did anyone else get a chance to see it? What did you all think?

The first part of a multi-part article now online over at http://www.filmmusic.com/

This series will be exploring the music of MOULIN ROUGE through interviews with the integral crew members on that film.

First up, we focus on The Songs of MOULIN ROUGE with an exclusive interview with Music Director Marius de Vries, and Music Supervisor Anton Monsted.

Soon to follow will be The Score of MOULIN ROUGE - keep an eye out for it!

The audience started laughing during the Roxanne tango. A man stood up in the middle of the film and yelled, "This is the WORST FU*KING MOVIE I've ever seen!" and walked out.

    Funny!

This is , in terms VISUALLY, the greatest film I've ever seen. period. I mean, can you imagine the EFFORT Baz and his crew put into this film? It was phenomenal. The songs were also wonderfully mixed.

 Was copyright issues(perhaps) that prevented many of the spinoff songs from being released on the CD? I found many tracks I saw in the film, absent from what I found in the CD?

No, it had nothing to do with copyright issues. From what I understand (it's in the interview), Baz wanted the soundtrack album to differ from the film. Maybe a Vol. 2 will see more of the film's songs, if it ever happens...

Also, the DVD will be a 2-disc set, and on the second disc, it will have all of the musical numbers separated in sequence. This would make for easy recording

Well... that's the plan for now. But as we all know, things can (and tend to) change......

Hard Target, I'm not comfortable discussing these issues in a public forum, as it tends to be used as fuel for the fire (what with my "inside connections" and all that being a major thorn in some people's sides).

So, feel free to email me privately.

Yeah, public places suck for insiders!

But more to the point, Baz Luhrmann talked a bit about the forthcoming DVD and soundtrack (part deux) at the Moulin Rouge panel/screening last Monday night at the Egyption theater in Hollywood. The second volume will be released in February, and I look forward to it.

The DVD will NOT have all of the musical numbers separatly on the second disc (it was an idea but not pursued).

Good news: Peter is right, a second CD will be released in February that has more music from the film, including "Like a Virgin" and, from what I've heard, a bit of score as well.

It bored me. All that zing, zang, zoom...and for what...a limp tragedy recited through karaoke.

For example: am I expected to think that a song contrived of a who's who of top 10 'love songs' is particularly clever? Does the director loathe 'popular' music or, is the well so dry and ears so lazy, that regurgitating hallmarks of the past was the only commercially viable solution?

I really liked this one... I probably never would have rented it myself, but my mom brought it home and I watched it.

I like it, but I also like musicals in general and I know musicals aren't everyone's cup of tea. (Like the fellow who didn't care for the Roxanne tango sequence.) I spent about $16 on the DVD and it's probably one of the best 2 set DVDs to date. However, I'm not quite sure why FOX didn't just put it all on one DVD-18 instead of two single sided discs.

The bonus material included is extensive. The second disc shows how some parts of the movie really improved over the years of production. I can't believe the Elephant Love Medley was originally some sort of thing involving "What's Love Got to do With It!"

Finally, I think Baz might need some Ritalin, since I think some of the "camera change every 250ms" deals left me a bit dizzy and annoyed.

    Cost.

Quite simply, it costs LESS to put out 2 DVD-9 discs, than 1 DVD-18. Also, with the single-sided discs you get nice pretty artwork.
