Well, here we are almost half way into the year and still nothing has really "stood" out yet...I have not heard "Atlantis" and I am looking forward to it being one of the highlights from the year...hopefully.

By the end of May last year we had already been treated to "Gladiator" and "Dinosaur." And had yet to hear "Chicken Run", "The Patriot" and "Hollow Man" before the "Oscar" "hopeful" score rush time. (Save for "Crouching Tiger" many argued that those were the best scores of last year on this very board.)

The best thing I've heard so far was "The Caveman's Valentine" (Terrance Blanchard score) for a film few will ever see. Silvestri's "Mummy Returns" seemed great in the film, but the disc, while overall pretty good, just didn't "have it." "Pearl Harbor" seems to be the "2nd" out-of-the-gate score.

What's left? "A.I.", "Planet of the Apes," "Harry Potter," "LOTR"? Is there something else to hope for? I like Don Davis and hope that "JPIII" illustrates he is more than a 1 great score wonder.

All this probably just a sign of those looming strikes--or a trend to have mostly songtracks instead of score releases, but the year looks bleak.

While it's WAY too early to think of Oscar time for scores, it may be a safe bet to throw in Howard's "Atlantis"(though he has several other projects coming out this year that could prove even greater); either or both of Williams' scores (not a guarentee); and if it works Elfman's "Planet of the Apes".

After all that babbling rant, any scores you are looking forward to this year (not already mentioned), or has something come out so far that we missed?

This year has definitely been somewhat of a stinker for scores... Atlantis isn't a knock out IMO, but it's probably the best this year (which is hardly saying anything), still not as good as Dinosaur though. I agree with your comments on Mummy Returns, it just didn't "have it" on CD for me either, still runner up for one of the best though. Pearl Harbor was good, though disappointing no doubt. I'd have to disagree with your views on Caveman's Valentine, though. To me, it is a pretty worthless CD, with only a few striking moments followed by atmospheric crap that did absolutely nothing for me when listening to by itself. I think A.I. will be the best score of the summer, but I have high hopes for Davis' JP3. Hardly looking forward to Planet of the Apes (Elfman's dad died 2 hours into the recording session, btw =(..), and I've never been much of a fan for Shore's work.

BTW, Great news on A.I. score... http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=9260

Don't forget about Goldenthal's upcoming Final Fantasy score.

This is one of the few upcoming scores I'm excited about at all.

Wish there was another Goldsmith summer score to look forward to...

ENIGMA by John Barry, this score should be available later this year?!

Of imminent scores coming up I'm most looking forward to Harry Potter.

It's gonna be interesting to see what Jerry Goldsmith comes up with on DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE and THE CASTLE.

    With
    • Harry Potter
    • A.I.
    • The Fellowship of the Ring
    • Jurassic Park III
    • Final Fantasy

all yet to come, I'm really looking forward to that second half of 2001. That's not a long list, but save A.I. (about which I don't yet know enough), they all stand a good chance to be true masterpieces.

NP: Richard Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel (Berlin Philharmonic, Herbert von Karajan)

Well, I could really care less about many of the new scores coming up.

I'm more excited about what FSM or Prometheus could release this summer.

Rio Lobo and The Conversation should be out this month! Yay!

I'd replied to the wrong thread, so I had to edit it. But I'm with jonathan. Aside from Final Fantasy, none of the new scores really intrigue me.

    But bring on Rio Lobo.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's sucked so far. Remember last year started out the exact same way..I remember that Reindeer Games was the best score I'd heard up until Gladiator, Dinosaur, Hamlet and MI2 showed up. Will the new scores catch fire you betcha. Just be paitent it's still early and we still have 6 months to ago. But i'm definetly looking forward to these scores:

    Jerry Goldsmith's The Castle
    John Williams' A.I.
Elmer Bernstein's Rat Race and Gangs of New York
Don Davis' Jurassic Park 3 (which gets more and more intriguing everytime I hear about it)
    Elliot Goldenthal's Final Fantasy
Danny Elfman's Planet of the Apes
Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings and The Score
Thomas Newman's The Majestic and The Salton Sea
    David Newman's Doctor Dolittle 2
    George S.Clinton's Scary Movie 2
    Hans Zimmer's Blackhawk Down

but like I said it's early still so who knows what treasure will be unleased. I've got bad news about Domestic Disturbance it's been pushed back to early next year. Ah well, I was really looking forward to this movie.

I'd have to say that the best score I've heard this year is Armstrong's Moulin Rouge, and when combined with the songs it's an absolute freakin' knockout.

    NP: Moulin Rouge Promo (Armstrong) **** 1/2 / *****.... Worth a 5? I'm just not sure yet!

Moulin Rouge is a knockout alright. It has lots of Beatles' and other '60s songs in an 1890 film. Great. John.

There's lots I'm still excited about upcoming:
Anything by Mr Goldsmith (is he still on Last Orders?)
    Planet of the Apes (Elfman)
    Blade 2 (Beltrami)
    Joy Ride (Beltrami)
    Final Fantasy (Goldenthal)
    Lord of the Rings (Shore)
    D'Artagnan (Arnold)
Ocean's Eleven (David Holmes -gonna be the coolest soundtrack of the year, surely)
The Count of Monte Cristo (Shearmur)
    Kiss of the Dragon (Armstrong)
Plus, there's seeing whether it'll be AI or Harry Potter (or both?) that's likely to get the obligatory Williams Oscar nod next year )

    That's plenty for me.

Timmer -you took the words right out of my mouth (as usual). A new score by the estimable Mr Barry is always cause for celebration (specially since they are an increasing rarity). And although it's not a soundtrack, his upcoming (at some point in the future I hope...) ETERNAL ECHOES album is something I really can't wait for.
I'm also with you on HARRY POTTER - this will be fantastic I am sure (also looking forward to the other John Williams biggie, AI)

I actually think this years is off to a decent start. I really like The Mummy Returns, I'm still debating Pearl Harbor internally (I really enjoy the eighth track, all else seems to require me to be in a somber mood). I've bought Atlantis, expecting that I will enjoy it as it is James Newton Howard, and I think I'm going to like the movie. I don't normally do that because I think it's a bad idea to blindly spend money- which I've done before and for as many times as I've been pleasantly surprised, I've been disappointed as much.

But I'd have to agree with the notion that the best is still yet to come.

I honestly am interested in the Tomb Raider score, and July is shaping up to be a hot month. I can't say I'm as psyched for Goldenthal's Final Fantasy as a lot of you guys are, but I am very interested in A.I., Jurassic Park III could be cool- and there is no way anything will stop me from getting Planet of The Apes if I like Elfman's score.

I am very much looking forward to The Castle myself but I sincerely hope Jerry Goldsmith passes on Domestic Disturbance. He's scored that kind of thing far too many times already. I'd much rather see him on Last Orders.

The only other summer scores that I am hotly anticipating are Planet of the Apes and A.I.

Hey Pete, Blade 2 isn't coming out until next summer and definetly looking forward to this one myself. How could I forget Ocean's Eleven I'm really looking forward to this movie no doubt it'll be good. I'm anxious to hear the Moulin Rouge score along with Armstrong's Kiss of the Dragon if it's released at all.

I know. Such a long time to wait. But I AM really looking forward to it (both film & score). I really didn't like the first film (over-edited beyond comprehension when it wasn't being dull & overlong), but with Guillermo del Toro at the helm, my expectations for the sequel or well up. And considering that Beltrami's last score for him was the excellent Mimic, I'm really looking forward to hearing what he's come(ing) up with for him this time...
