THE LEGEND OF 1900 (Ennio Morricone): Ennio has done so much stuff that his quality goes from about 1 (not zero?) to 10. On first listen I'd give this about a 7. Then I'll listen to it tomorrow and give it a 10.

RANDOM HEARTS (Dave Grusin): I'd seen this in the local shop for years but was put off by a negative review I read. I shouldn't have doubted! This is damn near great! Shows that there's more to life than big orchestral scores or synthesizer doodlings. So...noirish! If you like Grusin's score for Mulholland Falls, or even Goldsmith's end titles for The Russia House, you'll love this. A bit monothematic, but with real heart, and some great instrumental solos from Grusin himself on piano and trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard.

No, HMV also has it. http://www.hmv.com
In the search engine on the top of the HMV page, type "Pacte des Loups" and from the pull down menu choose "Title". Click on "Go" and it should take straight to the page for Pacte des Loups.

Only heard their 195?-197? compilation. The Ifukube music good. As well as some of the Masaru Satoh (I think that was his name) compositions. But many of the selections are probably the cheesiest late-60's/early 70's b-movie type of music you can find.

Liner notes are as always superb.
    Sound is also pretty good.

    Sean

I'd recommend getting both of them. Akira Ifukube provided the majority of music for the Godzilla series.

You will notice a big difference in the perfromance of the orchestra as well as the orchestrations for the films Ifukube scored as compared to the other composers.

Vol 1 does have some cheesy sounding music, but The compositions by ifukube and Masaru Sato stand out, although Sato's style does sound dated. the rest on Vol 1 is not really worth it, the music reflects the quality of the films in my opinion.

Vol 2 is Ifukube re-working his earlier music for some of the new movies, but they are in stereo and there are some new ones. Also the difference in orchestrations and performances are more obvious.

I'd stay away from Godzilla 2000. It is simply a weak and dreadful album. Takayuki Hattori provided the score for that film as well as Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla (which is on Vol 2). Godzilla 2000 is much worse than G vs SpaceG, which sounds like a bad version of John Barry's You Only Live Twice at times. You'll notice that on Vol 2 the other composers try to "Americanize" their scores and when some of them do use Ifukube's themes they aren't performed to well.

I would recommend trying to find the original soundtracks to the films on Japan's Futureland label but they are getting harder to find and are expensive.

I like your style, Marian - some great stuff you picked up in HMV. Glad to see someone getting into William Walton - great composer! Since you're obviously into classical as well as film music, I shall continue my quest to advertise the classical works of Malcolm Arnold - brilliant stuff, so check him out if you haven't done so already. He and Walton were great friends, and indeed there are certain Walton influences in Arnold's work.

Hope you enjoyed your trip to London - looks like it was well worth it!

Some great stuff on these two Walton CDs. I did look for Arnold CDs in London, but didn't find any. Perhaps I didn't look well enough, but then, I couldn't have carried more CDs anyway. Rest assured that I will be trying to hear more Arnold soon. I love his Tam O'Shanter!

    (QUOTE]

Tam O'Shanter is a great piece - you should also check out any of his nine symphonies, Marian. The best available recordings are the superb ones on Chandos, so far available are 1-6, all performed fantasticlly by the LSO conducted by Richard Hickox. Chandos are completing their Arnold symphonic cycle this year with the release of his 7th, 8th & 9th. The 7th is incredibly dark and compelling - I think you'll be surprised and impressed.
His other shorter pieces are too numerous to mention but are all fabulous! There's a GREAT disc on the American label Reference Recordings called "Arnold Overtures", featuring 5 stunning overtures performed by The London Philharmonic conducted by Arnold himself - including a wonderful, fairground-waltz-type piece called The Fair Field - Arnold dedicated this piece to Sir William Walton.
The two film-music collections (also on Chandos) are likewise fantastic, and another great starting point for anyone curious about Arnold.
    Happy listening!!

    Matt
