Basic Instinct 2CDR Complete Score Seabreeze(!?!)003(hmmm, Id love to see what other releases they have in their 'catalogue')

Ok, got this set yesterday, and here are the facts.
The sound is very good first off, although it seems like the center channel may be missing. It's hard to tell. It does NOT sound like some tape someone fished out of the trash though.

The packaging is non-existant, with a new cover, and a blown up photo of the Varese CD inlay pic for the back cover

No other info on the disc, other that this on the back:

    Music by Jerry Goldsmith
    Part One 18 Tracks 45:02
    Part Two 18 Tracks 45:03

That is wrong on the second disc, which is 13 Tracks 43:05.

    No cue titles(GRRRR!! )
The extra 21 cues are all new, mostly shorter, only one of two 'actiony'pieces, Im assuming for the scene in which George Dzunda's character dies. There are some nice pieces highlighting the moody string and synth writing of the score.
Ill try to rent the movie this weekend and create some cue titles. I only heard one or two alternates(one for sure within the first few tracks on Disc One), so either there is a lot of music not used in the film, or BASIC INSTINCT is a long score.

Bottom line is, if you are a fanatic(as I am) you'll probably like this. If you are a casual collector, you're not missing anything groundbreaking. I have read that many people wanted this one complete though.

    Please don't hate me! Huzzah!
    Sean

Well, I just got done spending some quality time with my laserdisc director's cut of BASIC INSTINCT and the new 2CD set. Here goes nothing... and to the bootleggers out there, enjoy your free track list. May your eBay customers all send you bad checks.

    DISC 1

    18. Kitchen Help (Alternate Version)

    DISC 2
    1. Kitchen Help (Film Version)

    .

Thanks for putting the work in, Big Bear. I was going to do this myself but was not looking forward to all the time and effort involved. Much appreciated.

Thanks Bear....funny you did this, since I just started compiling times and which cues were unreleased last night(with 'kitchen help' from Michael, lol )

For what it's worth, like on the Sherlock titles you did, they are appreciated and privately used by some people...not everyone runs out and sells these boots! Hope that makes sense...

PS...that 'Hellraiser' tv spot just about kicks ass....how cool to have that intense brassy 30secs. on disc!

    Thanks,
    Sean

    Foobs,

The LD isolates the alternate finale that JG wrote. This is also the album version, while the film version is different than all of these.

I didn't sequence this into my single disc CDR because it was non-thematic material. But if I were to put it in there, I'd put it as one of the 'bonus tracks' and leave 10 seconds between the end credits and it. There is certainly room for it, even on a mere 74 minute CDR.

Elsewhere has been asked the dubious question, "Do we really need more BASIC INSTINCT?"

Skipping past the silliness of the question itself, I can report that when this is put together much as Big Bear has suggested, it's quite an improvement. That's saying a lot, given the particular score this is. On the Varese disc, one pretty generous for them, and for soundtracks in general, one could appreciate the music in its pieces, and to some degree as an album.

In its fullness the BASIC INSTINCT score almost changes into a different kind of listen due to a surprising consistency in tone. It's hard to explain specifically... okay, on the Varese album, the track "Kitchen Help" acts as a sort of reprise of the main theme. That's how it works for me, and I'm fine with that. But in the complete score, the theme is hinted at, and finessed into and out of cues which feel like "Crossed Legs" for some time, so that when it finally reappears, you've all but been anticipating it, and when it shows up its marvelous.

Also the punctuated action music stands out in a better way. It doesn't show up and cause me to think "Ahh. The action cue." It's surrounded by so much of the sort of ethereal stuff that it really punctuates the score - much more as it should, and it seems to just belong where it is.

As is so often the case, the whole score properly sequenced is a much better listen than just the selections (which, to Varese's credit, were mostly in film order).

I couldn't agree more... I myself was wondering if 70+ minutes of BASIC INSTINCT would wear out its welcome. It sure doesn't.

Goldsmith must have tortured himself trying to decide which cues were to go on Varese's album, because they're all fantastic.

Also agree with the above, and just played this again last night

I felt there was too much 'reprise' of the theme in similar cues before...now the other cues nicely balance out the rest.

....and that TV spot is awesome, :30 of blasting low brass

Intrada has the boot listed on their One-of-a-kind page for $40.

A bit steep if you ask me.
