Hi all,Yesterday, I was asked in all seriousness and for the sake of space, to stop collecting scores. What would your response be?

Or like in Mickey Blue Eyes - "Die piggy piggy die die"Honestly - I'd probably first resort to not using jewel cases (if space is the problem)

Dont be so hard on yourself Rochelle! I've subjected many friends, roomates, family and currently a fiance to endless maddening hours of film scores! It's not until I get on a binge of avant-garde atonal Chris Young,Elliot Goldenthal scores that things get goofy! Not to mention my large collection of Phillip Glass....wanna infuriate someone quick? Play MUSIC IN 12 PARTS....all of it...as I do...did I mention it runs over three and a half hours.....of ensemble minimalism? There ya go!

There should be a good deal of room under the floorboards....for your roommate I mean, no one would want your CDs to get dusty.

Despite all the Hitchcock-ian possibilities, I would have to:1) Suggest a impassable turn-about:
"Ok, I'll stop collecting scores when you stop showering, to save water/watching t.v., to save electricity/eating to save food."2) Get thinner jewel cases.
Yes, they have them now! Check your local computer store.3) Consider organizing your CDs in those flip-books
(Get rid of the jewel cases, but save all your inserts.)Ok, that said, I have to ask--just how important is this "precious space" that your friend/roommate requires it to be unoccupied so as to put up another damned flowery Monet print, or potted Ivy, which is sure to wither in 3 weeks, or less....?

Also, if there are plenty you don't listen to all that much... I might suggest a small public storage unit. They're cheap and useful and usually pretty close. You may find a few things belonging to your roommate heading into storage as well.
But it sounds like a pretty crappy demand is being made of you, especially if you love film scores enough to post here. There's gotta be some middle ground.

I would advise you to reduce the amount of scores you get though. 60 sounds just too much - sometimes I get more than 5 scores myself at one time, and about 10 during a short timespan, but even then I have difficulties getting to know them all.

I am running out of space myself. If it gets any worse, I have come to the conclusion that I would cut back on buying CD', but not stop altogether. That, and I would start boxing the CD' and put them in the closet. More than enough space for the time being. Not the best possible solution, but one that doesn't require going cold turkey.

I can hardly get through the 60 minutes of Glass' Dracula. Let alone 3 and a half hours of this type of music?! I'd be in a coma! I am getting an twitch just thinking about it!

Hi Steve,
As much as I detest slim cases (can't read side of inserts) and flip-books, these may become inevitable should the issue become dwelled upon.
The current situation isn't helping. My CD rack is full and they are now lined up on the floor.
As for the flowery Monet - we got rid of one just recently.

Public storage space is a not an option for me especially since I do a lot of trading. An item that I don't listen to much could be highly tradeable.
Yes - you're right. It was a crappy demand and hence the subsequent shock. The person knows this is one of my major passions. While CD's on the floor (about 100) don't help - they are not in anyone's way. I think its the prospect of more arriving that is worrying roomie.

60 is quite a lot for a month but doesn't exemplify what I usually get. It just happens, at the moment, that everyone is contacting me for trades. I would never get by with 5 a month though. By the way - did I mention that I have tons of books as well?

Adding wall mirrors can make a place look larger... more spacious! Of course it will also reflect your CD collection and make that look larger too.
Or stack em up in the middle of the room and put a table cloth over them. No one will ever know!
I would tell your roommate that the 60 are on the way, but that's it... no more lots of 60. It's 30 to 40 absolute tops from now on and you will stand by that compromise.
I keep meaning to have a sale of my 'extra' CD's, but never seem to get around to it.
Cheers, (and please excuse the nonsense advice I posted!)

It just shows how frustrating the results of trading can be, if you don't restrain yourself, I had the same problem.

I'm sorry you have reached this moment. Is your place that small? Collection so big?
Tell the guy you'll lower his share of the rent. If you can't afford that find a new roommate--there has to be someone in town needing a place to stay.
But I will say this: If I were married and my wife said to me, it's me or the CDs, I'd be in divorce court the next day. There are certain things you can't ask a person and this is perhaps the major one for me. This request is like being asked to cut off an arm. Maybe the guy has a point if his space is shrinking, but still, what can you do? This is passion! Better he should go.
Funny thing is he probably thinks you're going overboard and he's only trying to be "helpful." Consider living alone if you can. Consider beating the sh/it out of him if you can. The more I think about this the madder I get. It's like telling you how you must live, who you can or can't see, whether you can get an abortion or not. It's time for this joker to go. Try to get over your insecurities and take your chances in the want ads. I'm sure you're not as hard to live with as you are thinking or have been told. Someone is using your fears as leverage against you in a manipulative way. That too is out of line.

I am the same. Last night I went to some friend's place for drinks and they were nice enough to play score CD's that I made for them.
Many of my friends, in some way or another, share my enthusiasm. I have no intention of ending my addictive cravings.

Rochelle--Dan may have a point. Get your housemate tanked (or stoned or layed), not to get him under the floorboards, but to take the edge off so he probably won't care how high your CDs get stacked. Although I often advocate the caveman's approach to things, this is the 21st century where strategy and sugar do have their place.Hard to believe I'm an Ozu advocate from the way I talk, huh?
Graham--Not that I'm at all easy to live with myself [gee, who would figure that?], but I have lived with people that roaches would call unclean.
So I suppose I'm biased against housemates to begin with.
