I am thinking of buying Schindler's List and
Jurassic Park. But then I thought of E.T. Then I considered well why not wait for A.I. HEEELLLLPPP!!! what do you think. Oh and keep in mind that I have limited funds.

    get SCHINDLER'S LIST. No hesitation.

JURASSIC PARK you can wait on; I'd get E.T. But get the expanded edition, not the original (short LP) version.

I'd wait for AI to come out before getting it; meanwhile go get those classic Williams scores!

Get ET - no doubt about it. Classic must-have.
Then if you have more money get Schindler's List - often acclaimed as Williams' best but takes some getting into (which is why I prefer certain other Williams scores)

Then save up and get Jurassic Park - one of the best of the 90s

Wait to hear what AI is like before getting it. The other 3 are established masterpieces, but we haven't heard AI yet.

Yes I agree with Camillu on AI but I heard some of it on NPR radio. It sounds great!! I can't wait for it to be released.

Np: Hook another John Williams classic

Jurassic Park, one of my top favourite film scores. I could cry when listening to "Welcome to Jurassic Park".

    John,

Those scores are the foundation for any film music collection. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of those- in fact, I'd run to the store as fast I could to buy them! And then, as I would listen to them, I'd get a friend to beat me with a crobar as my punishment for not buying them sooner!

    Tim

NP: Death and the Maiden (Kilar)

I would without hesitation get E.T., but the very next one I think shoould be Jurassic Park. Those you know will be entertaining. A.I. is a wild card because the movie isn't quite out, those the music on the previews shows promise. Schindler's List is worth getting, but make it last and I would suggest doing some kind of "try before you buy" things, and listening the whole score completely in a used records store for that kind of thing, assuming they have it. Nowadays, other than seeing the movie first, is the only way to assure yourself your purcahse was worth it. I have to do it all the time to protect my dollar. Selling used CD's to someplace that deals in them is becoming a difficult thing. If all that is too much money to spend over time- there is John William's 2 CD set of Greatest Hits from Sony Classical. It might very well be worth it.

E.T. is the cornerstone, out of all the scores you mentioned here. It is one of Williams greatest masterpieces.

And as much as I am loathe to support compilations in favor of full scores, Sony's BEST OF WILLIAMS 2CD set is indeed a great one... scratches the surface of many many of his greatest works, and should help steer you in the right directions. All in all, probably the best bet for your money.

But dat's just my 2 cents.

    I'll add my two cents:

I just picked up a used copy of Schindler's List, and I'm sure used copies of Jurassic Park and E.T. are around.

My opinion seems to go against everybody else here, but I feel Jurassic Park is a better listen than E.T. The only tracks on E.T. that I get excited about are the last two. The others bore me to death. (Sorry) Jurassic Park is much more enjoyable as a whole.

Oh yeah... I forgot to metion that the cue "Escape, Chase, Saying Goodbye" in E.T. is really really good

I would go as far as to say that in my opinion it is the best score track ever penned.

I don't mean to add to the problem... but what about Far and away! I saw the film it was dumb but the music was great!

Far and Away is one of those scores that I honestly think could be very good but haven't listened to it enough since I got it. It's on my 'to be rediscovered' list, so to speak.

Still, I would classify it beneath the other 3....but at the end of the day they're all Williams in fine-form.

As a whole, Empire of the Sun is somewhat boring... but there ARE a couple standout cues that make the price of the cd completely worth it. Buy it when you have a few bucks lying around (that's what I did!).

We are speaking of John Williams right? And if so, can there really be a debate over which of his scores to purchase? There is only one answer to that question: ALL of them. Every last one of them is in my collection-can't imagine any serious film music collection without them. Haven't heard a single cue, theme or track from the man that was not executed without brilliance. For me, there is not another composer living or dead that can lay claim to that.

I guess we're not counting the disco Close Encounters theme.

Wait a second... not executed... without brilliance? Double negative? HEY! This guy just bagged on Williams! GET HIM!!!

    All good advice!

However, since you want all of those, you might as well join one of the CD clubs. BMG or Columbia House. They have all of those, (not counting A.I.) and it would be rather cheap to do so along with many of the other great soundtracks they have.

The only drawback is, it is only available for those in the US!

    Empire of the Sun boring?

I can see some of the cues being a little hard to listen to, but Jim's New Life, the first track, the last track, the one's inbetween with the exeption of one or two and imaninary airbattle...boring? And this from (I love John Barry) Jeron?

Man, what is this message board coming to...

All that is needed to join, is to visit their web sites, read the info about what you have to do. For a example, with the Columbia House club, you can get upwards to 15 CD', that will cost around $20-35 for the lot. Then you need to buy another amount of discs within a certain amount of time. About 3-6 CD' within 2-3 years in most circumstances.

Personally the BMG club is the better choice though, since you don't have to buy nearly as many. In fact, only 1 IIRC. You do get less discs though. On the upside, they have a way better selection of soundtracks from the likes of Marco Polo, Decca, Sony Classical and RCA. Some of which are available at CH, some that are not and Vice versa.

In any case, if you buy soundtracks on a somewhat frequent basis, like more than 5-10 a year. It should prove to be a great asset. The fact, they both usually have great sales, like buy 1 get 1 free and so on, it is a great way to increase one' collection. Shipping is rather lame and regular prices are MSRP though. Not too bad otherwise.

    Sean Robert Abbey
