Warning: the following paragraph contains both off-topic conversation and spoilers from the movie Shrek. After that, the post is pretty safe. So, I just saw Shrek. What an awesome film! I haven't laughed like that in ages.I have to say that the two best moments were when Fiona bursts the bird by singing too high, and when they inflate the frog and snake to serve as balloons. The way the frog's legs flopped about almost killed me.

Anyway, one of the non-spoiling things about Shrek that I really enjoyed was the score. It was gorgeous! How can we arrange for a release? Does anyone have any mafia connections?
Seriously, I really do want this score, though. If anyone comes across a boot or a promo or anything, or better yet news of a release(hey, I can dream), please let me know!

Prob, yes.I was fascinated and wholly entertained by the anti-Disney sentiment throughout the movie. When Cinderella started fighting Snow White over the wedding bouquet, I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard.
I had a problem with the music in the opening title, though. Smashmouth's "All Star" didn't work as Shrek's introductory anthem - the song has enjoyed a huge cultural imprint prior to the movie, it didn't gel with the originality of Shrek's world. Underscore here would have been awesome.
But, by the end of the film, the cover of "I'm a Believer" was genius. It was source music, to boot.
The score was great, too. Powell's big adventure themes are always exciting.
I am glad I saw Shrek after... well, let's just say that Shrek shortened the length of my Pearl Harbor hangover.

Powell's primary composition was the TND-styled cue when Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and the Dragon are sprinting through the castle (and a few other cues).

Yes!Carry on the CHICKEN RUN spirit!
These two are genious! I loved the main theme, especially at the end where they are flying through the air to save the princess
*side note*- Rufus Wainwright's HALLELUJIA was simply beautiful and worked incredibly at the film's most sentimental part of the movie
can't wait to see how ATLANIS compares too!

I would call Shrek a great RENTAL. I was let down with it. It had some great moments and some really funny ones here and there but as a whole those funny parts were not enough to save the lacking film. It was entertaining for the most part, although I had more fun making fun of it than watching it.I will give it **/**** looking back on it now. I was at *.5/**** before.

Is Smash Mouth's "All Star" in the context of this film? If so, I puke in its general direction.NP--vomiting

Jeron, wasn't SHREK supposed to be HGW's score alone at first, and then Powell was thrown onto the film at the end? I just remember reading somewhere (IMDB?) that HGW was the only composer assigned to the project at one point.Mike

I saw the film yesterday, and I enjoyed it. Following a somewhat nauseating title sequence, the film is terrific from start to finish. And the score is also good. The prologue, the entire castle sequence with the dragon and Princess Fiona's "Sommersby"-like theme surely merit their own album.Speaking of "Sommersby", today is Danny Elfman's birthday. How's that for a segue? But try to stay on topic.

Thanks on the compliment. I've always found SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS to be JNH's most mature work, and quite possibly his best (yes, even better than ATLANTIS and DINOSAUR). Maybe it's just the solo cello work that I'm always a sucker for. Maybe it's the ethnic rumblings. Maybe it's the massive choir, or the themes, or the lovely string work. Maybe I'm just a sucker for romantic music such as that score. It just seems to be so different from anything JNH has ever done, and he got it right the first time.

The muffin man conversation killed me...of course none of the screaming 3-year olds around me understood a second of it...but oh well.A truly entertaining film, the score was excellent, but I could have done with Smash Mouth also.
Kross...I think you need a brighten your life a bit. If you couldn't enjoy Shrek and you think Requiem for A Dream is the best movie ever, well....

Quill Requiem for a Dream was a much, much better film than Shrek, hands down... Though not as enjoyable (obviously), it was still a much more rewarding movie experience.NP: Plunkett and Macleane (Armstrong) ***/*****

I think that depends on the person...it very plausible for someone to come away from Requiem with nothing...but (almost) everyone should be able to find some intrinsic enjoymenet in Shrek. But I can respect, that Requiem was the more rewarding filmgoing experience for you. (I still need to rent the damn film!)

I am a happy person, see
, but I just did not like Shrek all that much. I loved Emperor's New Groove and it is a far funnier film than Shrek to me, mainly becaise I love dry offbeat humor. Shrek was more or less a CGI talent show to me, and the film was nothing new and was quite lacking in every arena. It felt like a 2 hour music video, without the music. There were some funny moments, but nothing amazingly funny for me. Quills, have you seen RFAD yet? See it and get back to be on that subject.
P.S.
Shrek is one of those TRAILER films...where most of the funny parts are shown in the trailer, and when you see them in the film they are lacking and shallow, not to mention unfunny. I laughed maybe three times during Shrek, but it was a chuckle not an uproar.[Message edited by Kross on 05-30-2001]

Shrek is a CGI movie with no plot or soul that is different, and is worth a rental...RFAD is not for everyone, and it is too much for most so I am not surprised that many will "not enjoy" it for different reasons. I do not want to argue which is a better film because that is obvious.

Honestly, all RFAD made me was slightly depressed. I mildly resent your implication that it was 'too much for me,' though. I have no problem with difficult concepts or difficult movies. This wasn't one. Do you really want me to ramble on as to why?
