After reviewing the scores that are left for this year, I guess I can say that the one I'm looking forward to most is Lord of the Rings.

Then again, I would be looking forward to it if it were scored by Britney Spears, and I must admit I don't know a sausage about Howard Shore's music.

My only knowledge of his work is a tape of Mrs. Doubtfire I got a while ago, which although fitting the romantic comedy bill very well, doesn't exactly float my boat.

I'm hoping for an all out orchestral score for LOTR - one that will blow me out of my seat during the landscape shots of middle-earth and the action scenes.

Which scores should I give a listen to to understand what Howard Shore is capable of?

I tend to very much dislike Howard Shore's music.
That said, there are a couple of his scores which I like:
    The Yards
    Philadelphia
Both are slow and dramatic. With two or three themes, repeated with variations.

Many also seem to like "Dogma" and "Ed Wood", though I'm not that fond of Dogma, and I can't remember having ever heard Ed Wood.

Uh...yeah. Hit me Gandalf one more time...

You need to seriously pick up Shore's Looking For Richard score asap.

JJ better have "John Doe Jersey" on any compilation he makes. If not, he's an ass.

I never frequent the FSM board, so I'll have to take your word for it.

Howard Shore is a composer capable of anything.

For large scale works, check out Looking for Richard and The Fly.

For horrifying and bewitching music, check out Silence of the Lambs and Se7en (the latter is a song album, but it has about 20 minutes of fantastic Shore scoring on it).

For more experimental sounds, check out Naked Lunch (a collaboration with Ornette Coleman) and The Cell. More sound experimentation can be found on Crash (which features a series of highly distorted electric guitars and basses along with a chamber orchestra) and Videodrome (one of the most important scores [and films] of the eighties, with complex arrangements that blur the lines between electronic and orchestral components of the score).

Shore is capable of a warmer sound as well, as heard in his scores for The Client and Nobody's Fool.

Believe me, Lord of the Rings is in safe hands.
