Check out Ian McKellen's homepage for a brief comment on Shore's score (at the bottom of the page) - apparently, there's going to be a "majestic Fellowship theme"!

Also, McKellen reports that the background story was originally intended to be shown as a prologue to the first film, but was now changed so that Gandalf now tells it as part of the main story. "The Shadow of the Past" being one of my favourite chapters, I'm very glad to read this - even in case they're still doing it differently, at least Gandalf is telling it now.

I am twitching with utter excitement at the thought of both this film and this score.

It seems that finally some people who really care about the fantasy / sword and sorcery film is adapting the veritable Bible of the genre.

Maybe this will help me forget DRAGONHEART... and D&D... and WILLOW... and every other movie that has totally dropped the ball with respect to fantasy.

Man, what GOOD fantasy films have there really been? There's been CONAN (the first, thanks very much) and there's been DRAGONSLAYER (one of the pinnacles of the genre... no wonder no one went to see it, it was that good).

Anyone else remember any good ones?

I personally loved Dragonheart... but none of the others you mentioned, including Conan (BAD bad) and Dragonslayer (ugh).

Fortunately, LOTR looks like it will be excellent.

Wicked!!! At last, a thread around here devoted to something of quality (okay, I haven't heard it yet, but I'm really just referring to Shore generally).
I have to admit, I haven't actually read any of the books, but I'm really excited about the film, & will try to read them soon (or should I wait until after I've seen the film, in case it's not as good?). I started reading The Hobbit once, but couldn't really get into it. It's surely time I gave it another go.

    Useless Trivia:

The DVD of D&D shows SOUNDTRACK ON VARESE SARABANDE at the bottom.

    Imagine that!

It can't be, I would expect New Line Records to release it. They have released the scores to their movies since the creation of that label.

That was the funny thing Kyp

New Line did release a 76min. album(with one song) of Justin Caine Burnett's score. I just wonder when Varese was ever involved.

Oh, you were talking about D&D trailer, I thought you ment the trailer for LOTR was on the D&D DVD and that said Soundtrack on...........

Also, why did you buy that movie, or did you rent it?

I'd like to hear commentary with the director, I still wonder what the hell he was thinking.

I was curious to get it, since there is commentary...is it that bad Kyp?
I rented Towering Inferno on DVD instead

"Dark Crystal" is fantastic....(You can probably add "Labyrinth" in there, too.)
"Legend" is pretty decent, if you can warm up to it, though most can't (or won't.)
"The Last Unicorn"--animated, but still done competently.
"Neverending Story"...but the first one only. (I realize that the sequels are part of the original story, but...they waited too long to make them.)
"Ladyhawke", a fairy tale done with a slight modern edge.

and naturally, "Star Wars"...the ultimate fantasy film.

why am I going on like this...I hate listing. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents worth....

I really like Dragonheart, though I wasn't too keen on it the first time I saw it. It's a different kind of fantasy than Tolkien's of course, more on the fairy tale side. I found Conan stupid, but still enjoyed it because of Arnold Schwarzenegger's goofy peasant-accent.

Anyone know of a Quicktime version of the new Fellowship trailer? My RealPlayer has some problems.

I bet you'll finish the first Potter (and possibly the other three) before Fellowship of the Ring. LOTR is fantastic and still my favourite, but it can be very dragging to read, while Potter just doesn't let you do anything else before you finished the book.

So did my entire family, and most of my friends, and dozens of 'net aquiantences... And of course, those are just the people I know...
There are also the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people who watched the movie over and over and bought the video and DVD thus suggesting that a sequel (although said sequel was abysmal) could be profitable...

But how many people like it doesn't really matter. What matters to me, in the end, is that I enjoy it, even if you don't.

    I agree.

Everyone will be going fantasy mad this christmas. Fellowship, Harry and the Philosopher's Stone, animated Lord of the Rings on DVD, 2 disc Special Edition of Willow on DVD.....My only worry is that these great fantasy releases will spawn of lame copycats later down the line.

Yeah, the second half of this year will be extremely exciting! (And don't forget that the fifth Potter novel is probably coming out during that time, too! )

I yesterday first read of the rumours about the DVD release of Bakshi's LOTR, and while the film is of course bad, I still love it. Great news!

Potter 5 is delayed until Spring 2002 at the earliest actually. Overseeing the production of the movie and its merchandise has taken up too much of Rowling's time to get it finished.

Perhaps Rowling finds time to do some more of those great "Comic Relief" books. I haven't read Quidditch Through the Ages yet, but that won't keep me occupied until next year.
