Just got back from seeing Shrek. It was far better than I expected. The theater was cracking up, and I enjoyed the score :-)Some very nice work was done in the castle/lava scenes..the main theme was given a techno-ish backbeat. Really exciting msuic

Too bad only one track is on the cd. bring on the bootleg/promo! :-)

I concur - great score! Wonderful movie, too. Very funny. It made me all warm and fuzzy inside.[Message edited by Jeron on 05-18-2001]

Unfortunately Shrek disappointed me. Maybe I expected too much, but it just didn't satisfy me for the most part. It wasn't nearly as funny as Toy Story 2, more on the level of Chicken Run... Then again, it didn't have near the charm that Chicken Run had, so it didn't really have much going for it. There were too many gags that just weren't funny =( I did enjoy the score a great bit, mainly the huge action scene in the castle and the part at the end where the dragon takes Shrek back to Farquad (sp)'s castle. Not a bad film by any means, and the animation was superb, just not as good as I predicted it would be.

In Shrek's DefenseThat's what happens when you set your expectations too high. What the trailers showed me was exactly what I got, and I was immensely pleased. It's a great film for kids - with a good moral backbone and enough clever humor to satisfy even the adults. Who cares if it's predictable? Read a little Joseph Campbell and then come back to me w/ an argument about predictability.
I attended w/ my parents and uncle in tow, and they walked out laughing. Keep in mind: My father is 65, my mother is 48, and my uncle is 46.
Chicken Run was terrific, but I found myself more attached to the characters, capitivated by the storyline, and entertained by the jokes in Shrek.
Jason and John, I'm not sure what more a person can expect from a movie like Shrek when the story itself revolves around the vocal talents of Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy... but oh well.
As far as the negative criticism and general disappointment - well guys, I don't know what to say... I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy it. I really am.
I think that Shrek has the potential to become a classic among fairy tale fans and children alike. The morality of the story really shines in my eyes, and that's what kids will be taking away with them when they leave the theater. That's the most important part, and I think the Shrek team definitely succeeded in accomplishing their goal. As for me, I'm anxious to see it again.

Oh Christ Jeron, there you go... The simple fact is Shrek "IS" a disappointment, don't go off on how none of us should have any "high expectations"... The film was disjointed, I didn't get a rats ass about any of the characters. I was amused the whole way through and found myself chuckling, not to mention adoring all of the animation, but the fact is this movie wasn't that great. I didn't mind the predictability, I did however mind the fact that it wasn't really that entertaining. I went with about 6 friends, and none of the them were impressed like they have been in the past with say, oh... Toy Story 1/2, Mulan, A Bug's Life, etc... And what's with that comment on Myers/Murphy? Having both of them in the film made just the possibility for it to be extremely funny even higher, as Myers is hilarious all around and Murphy did a fantastic job with Mushu in Mulan... That said, the problem here was the dialogue just wasn't strong enough. Lithgow's character didn't even have a memorable line, maybe a funny one here or there but that's all. I'm sorry, this film was a let down, but don't by any means "feel sorry" for those of us who didn't enjoy it. I can equally "feel sorry" for you because you enjoyed this mediocre film and don't have appreciation for higher art, but that would be non sense and I would never say such a thing. Just let people have their own opinions, Jeron.posted 05-19-2001 01:51 PM PT (US)

As the well-known, long-since-appointed Dictator of the Known Universe, I don't see how that's possible for Jeron, since as all of us know from years of experience that he is among the most impossibly intolerant, compulsively heckling, and all-around vicious people such Boards as this have ever seen.NP: BREAKOUT (Jerry Goldsmith) (I kind of like this ... oh God, please Jeron NOT THE WHIP)

Oh Rocco, PLEASE! The WHIP has gotten old... I have a new toy. Prepare yourself...Jason, I'm not criticizing you not enjoying the film... I am just sorry that you couldn't. It just an opinion. I do have an appreciation for "higher art," whatever that may be, though I do enjoy the simple things as well. Shrek was never intended to be (nor would I have wanted it to be) in the "higher art" category. It's a kids film, for cryin' out loud. As I said, I applaud the talents of those who contributed and am more than happy with the result.
That's that.
As for letting people have their own opinions, when did I prevent you from having your own?
