Did anyone else notice this? I never heard of it before, but perhaps I just missed it and it's old news.

Anyway, I have repeatedly noticed a small motif at one point in the Hollow Man score that reminded me of Gremlins 2 (perhaps it's in the first film, too, I'm not very familiar with that score yet). It's not the Gremlin Rag and not Gizmo's Song, either, but a little motif that features prominently in the second (I think) track of G2. I had always been wondering if this was a deliberated re-use of that motif or just coincidence.

Right now, I'm playing the Hollow Man DVD with Goldsmith's iso score/commentary, and this time, the Gremlins motif sounded particularly "determined" to me. I looked at the TV and didn't see any connection to Gremlins at first - but then I realized: at the point where the motif plays, Kevin Bacon puts on sunglasses so they can turn the lights back on (his eyes are too sensitive for normal light) - the motif IS a deliberate reference, to the Gremlins' aversion for light!

    I found this very funny.

I think its just a matter of style. A signiture that Goldsmith beleived works in the situatoin.

Did you see how the motif is used? I explained clearly why I think it's a deliberate reference in my post above. Also, I don't consider re-using a theme as "style", that's why I don't accept the argument "It's only his style" when talking about a certain composer. Using a theme from somewhere else may or may not be appropriate in a situation, but it doesn't have to do with style. Also, I never heard the motif in any other Goldsmith scores.

This is funny, Marian. Thanks for pointing it out. I never would have noticed this.

Goldsmith did say on the commentary that it's the more private inside things he does in his scoring that makes it worthwhile, even if nobody else gets it.

Or maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe it's just "a coincedince."

Perhaps I'll try to ask him at the London concert. Though I'm really pretty sure I'm right. It's just too obvious, once you got it.

Marian in London, slightly nervous at standing in the presence of greatness:

"Excuse me sir, why does Hollow Man suck? and can you sign this?"

"Sir, thanks from Shaun for dedicating Hollow Man to him, though I really do wonder why the score sucks so hard. And what the hell is that Gremlins stuff doing there? Oh, and could you please sign this?" (hands 3 obvious boots of mediocre "bottlecap-type" scores to Mr. Goldsmith)

Complete score boots of Angie, Alien Nation, and Leviathan would go with me if I were going to London. You betcha!

wonder if he'd say anything if you showed with an FSM CD like Rio Conchos and/ or a Thaxton-produced CD like Contract on Cherry Street.

My understanding is that Goldsmith is well aware of the FSM and Thaxton-produced releases, so it wouldn't be "surprising" to him....

Take it from someone who showed Goldsmith the FSM Rio Conchos. My guess is that he's well aware of it and the others. He must just like throwing two left jabs to people's faces. Sigh.

If I wanted to get something signed by Jerry, I'd have to find an Hour of the Gun (or some other western), Masada or QB VII LP.

Having him sign a CD booklet just wouldn't be the same...

Has anybody ever written him a fan letter? I'd like to, but at the same time I don't want to offend the guy. I guess "thanks for the new Total Recall," would be better than, "I love Take a Hard Ride and Police Story!"
