Just thought I'd share my pleasure with you all at receiving this 4 CD compilation today. For anyone in the U.K. interested the album is incredibly priced at just £14.99 with over 4 hours of music! The music ranges from early works like Zulu, Born Free, through to Robin and Marian, Walkabout right up to his latest efforts such as Cry the Beloved Country, Mercury Rising, The Scarlet Letter etc. Of course there's also the expected James Bond music too. What I really like about this compilation (apart from the length...56 tracks!!) is that it has a nice variety in its presentation. As well as the obvious "Theme from" tracks which Barry's name is synonomous with, there are quite a few longer "suites" from many of his scores. The following tracks are all in suite or extended form:-

    ZULU (7:43)
    MISTER MOSES (7:52)
    BORN FREE (5:49)
    DEADFALL (10:54)
    THE LION IN WINTER (8:10)
    THE LAST VALLEY (8:37)
    MONTE WALSH (11:12)
    THE DOVE (6:32)
    ROBIN AND MARIAN (7:36)
    RAISE THE TITANIC (9:27)
    THE COTTON CLUB (6:33)
    HIGH ROAD TO CHINA (8:11)
    THE SPECIALIST (6:29)

Interspersed with these are another 43 of Barry's most popular and famous themes/music. The Bond music is also a nice selection...not just focusing on the themes but also adding tracks from the scores e.g.

YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE Main Theme/Capsule in Space
    OHMSS Ski Chase
    MOONRAKER Miss Goodhead meets Bond
    OCTOPUSSY Palace fight
A VIEW TO A KILL Wine with Stacey/Snow Job
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS Hercules Take off

All of this plus an incredible recording in Dolby Surround, conducted by Nic Raine and authorised by Barry himself..its a must-have for any Barry fan. Its a real privilege having this treasure in my collection as a lot of my Barry scores are on LP. I havent felt so good about a CD purchase in a long time! Gae NP Guess what?

Gae, I believe this release is a compilation of Silva's releases of Essential James Bond, The Classic John Barry, The Classic Film Music Of John Barry Volume Two and Zulu, in which case I won't be purchasing this!

As a starting point for anyone wanting to find out more of Barry's work, then this is a great way to find out just what a great melodist Barry is....without a doubt one of THE greatest, I believe only Morricone, Legrand, Poledouris and, of course John Williams are anywhere near close! (I purposely didn't mention any non living composers)

Also please check out Silva's brilliant release of the complete WALKABOUT!

NP : Silver Streak on t.v....not watching, just listening to Mancini's fine score

I agree Timmer. Obviously anyone who already has the other compilation albums need not invest in this. As I mentioned above though, most of my Barry collection is either on LP or cassette..the only exceptions being "The Beyondness of Things" and "Zulu and other themes" (whoops!!..almost forgot..You Only Live Twice, OHMSS,Man with the Golden Gun, Moonraker!!)which are recent purchases. The latter as you mentioned contains several of the same recordings as on the "Collection" e.g. The Deep, Cotton Club, The Specialist, Frances, etc. Why I am so happy about this "Collection" though is that I can now have all my favourite Barry music (as well as a few I dont have) on one compilation and also in superb Dolby Surround. Also, unlike some people, I DO enjoy hearing new recordings of pieces if they are well done, as they breath fresh life into established "Classic" music. I'm also a fan of Nic Raine's interpretations of Barry as you can tell he really has an affinity for the music, never rushing his tempo but holding on to every subtle nuance of each beautiful melody. This CD is also very important to me in joining my ever increasing collection of music CD's at my bedside, whose sole purpose in life is to assist me into effortlessly falling into a tranquil and deep slumber late at night Gae
