There was this REALLY hot chick hanging 'round here a while back. Her name was Dex. DAMNIT she was hot! She sent me all kinds of sexually explicit IMs "back in the day", but all of a sudden, she up and disappeared. Anybody know whatever happened to Dex?Shaun

Fishchips are known as "Trisex" gender. As far as females, well - we have the lovely Joan, Cine-sen, Jennie, Shiela, and Michel. My mom drops in every now and then, too... just to make sure I'm behaving myself.

OK, MovieMusicFans, here I am.....Jeron's Mom, Linda....and I am female, obviously. I'm sure you all know 'stuff' about Jeron that I don't, but you know what? Jeron is over 18, and I hope he's been taught values that stick with him. I know that he loves you guys and I've met quite a few of you....so far, I have no real complaints. If you ever feel the urge to say anything important to me at anytime, please email me at wirebender@home.com Thanks.

Linda, Jeron is a good kid. There are a lot of very good folks on this board. They are polite and have manners. Not like on some others. I appreciate their decency. JW.

Actually, I'll have to think about that one.... But I am thinking that no where near as many girls listen to film music as guys, that was the point of this thread.Clayton

So......let's explore the question. Why do guys listen to film music more than their illustrious counterparts? I know I enjoy it. Anyone have any answers?

oh goodness...
I think we discussed this topic way way long ago once upon a time and it STILL puzzles me. I'd think (not to be sexist or anything) that girls enjoy "softer" music compared to guys but 'course, there's always exceptions. Hmmm...but I don't know. Maybe we girls are just too obsessed with our nsync and backstreet boys! j/k But really, I'm not sure why there's such an inbalance of guys and girls with film music. Whadya guys think?

Jennie, you cant get much softer music surely than a theme by John Barry etc. Its not all testosterone inducing action-packed macho music you know!
Personally I only like LOUD film music if its got something to say or propels the emotion along and not just NOISE for the sake of NOISE.
I think the reason there are more fellas here than women is that men do tend to be a bit more "GEEKY", can spend hours deliberating over the minutae of things and we are more into gadgets and discussing them etc etc! Does that sound sexist? I myself have quite an obssessive nature and if I like something I REALLY like it and can spend hours getting more info, who did this, what year was that etc etc! I sometimes can bore my sister and mother to death trying to explain to them the pleasure I get from a particular piece of film music and how it works emotionally within the context of the narrative...the stock reply usually being "Oh yes?" in a forced interested tone
I dont think I've ever had a girlfriend who ever understood this obssessive behaviour..probably why I'm still single now
To prove this point about GEEKY behaviour, even though we have a few female members here, they never seem to post much stuff but usually disappear off the "face of the board" and only write when questioned directly..i.e.this post. Oh well, I've tried my best to say what I think on the subject!! Thats all I can come up with. Gae NP TTRL[Message edited by Gae on 05-06-2001]

We have discussed this before. I really have no idea why so few women listen to film music.(or compose or conduct)Thank goodness I took, "the road less traveled," and in my life, that has, "made all the difference."

Could it be, that most songs are fixed for female audiences? I have never really been able to tel, and I think this is one reason why I prefer instrumental music.I mean lets looks at N'Sync, now I think everyone will agree, thats a girls group? At least I think so. Guys tend to sing about relationships with females alot. And in turn females fall head over heels for stuff like that. Male listeners don't care!
But now look at Britney Spears, this time its a girl. But is her music really intended for guys? I don't know any honorable man who would say he listens to her! Females sing about relationships with guys or just about being a girl. Men still don't care.
Men prefers songs about lifestlyes, cars and sports. But compared to the number of relationship type songs there aren't many.
It is also a scientific fact that most Men pay more attention to mood and melody rather than lyrics when hearing a song for the first time. Women do the opposite.

Hey, save this looneyness for the chat! I can't have there be any competition between the message boards and chat, you know... bad karma. On topic, though, it appears that "discussing" movie scores and soundtracks is an extension of the "collector." If you look at the demographic of the "collector," you'll see that this is the group dominated by the male. Why is this? I don't particularly think soundtracks are enjoyed mostly by males, as there are more female buyers in the MovieMusic store than male buyers. I am led to believe this is a "collector" phenomenon rather than a movie score or movie soundtrack phenomenon, and the male is more likely to be a "collector" (in our terms) than the female.

Batman: Knit of the Phantasm was composed by a woman. The inestimbale and always under-published Shirley Walker, to be precise.American Knit X was also composed by a woman. That notable was the very talented Anne Dudley, also responsible far such favorites as The Knitting Game and The 10th Knit.
I only mention these two because I particularly enjoy their work. There are and have been other female film music composers. If you don't believe me, then just ask someone who you will believe and who agrees with me. They'll tell you. Yes.

Lordy...I don't even remember how the knits got started. But yes, I agree with Probable. There's a lot of very good female composers out there. Hmm...Rachael Portman (Cider House Rules, Legend of Bagger Vance, Chocolat, etc) comes to my mind first.
