Elmer Bernstein is to conduct the BBC Concert Orchestra in a concert of Golden Age film music at this years' BBC Proms in Londons' Royal Albert Hall. The Concert is on Tues 14th August, & features music by Korngold, Rozsa, Herrmann, Tiomkin, Copland, Waxman, Steiner, & others. A full list of detail is available here.
What's really great about the Proms concerts is that you don't have to book tickets in advance (unless you're some kind of namby pamby Mary sort who wants a seat), by standing in the Arena (or, if you prefer, right at the very top of the hall), right in front of the orchestra. You have to queue up beforehand, but queueing's really good fun (unless it rains), as you get to sit around with loads of likeminded people. Queueing starts usually at around 1-2pm for a 6:30 going in time, to get right at the front, but usually you can get in arriving just as the doors open. Of course, if it's really popular (like the Simon Rattle, Vienna Phil Mahler 2 a year or two back), the front of the queue arrives well early. For that concert I arrived at 9:30ish, & wasn't even on the front row of the arena! Also, it was completely full by about 3pm. But that is very much the exception!!
And also, by standing (or Promming, as we like to call it) tickets cost just £3! No, that's not a mistype! £3 to stand right at the front next to Mr Bernstein himself, & him him conduct all this terrific music!! Can you think of a better deal?
For more information about the standing tickets, go here.

Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll be able to make it, it depends if I get a job here in Edinburgh over the summer or not. But, by golly, I'd really love to be there!!!!

Oh, & I should also say that that promming picture is of them going in. We don't stand like that all day. There's a nice big wall we sit by & on & stuff. It's not disallowed to go for little walks around the hall to stretch your legs either (provided the people next to you know). It's not really very "formal" queueing. In case anyone was wondering.

    How excited most people are.

Anyway, I just thought that I'd add something significant that I had previously missed out. The concert is being broadcast live on Radio 3, so no matter where you are, you can easily tune in & listen to it here : http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3 !! Maybe when it's on, it might be possible to have a meeting in the chat room of the people listening on line. It'd be like that all listening to the same CD thing, although we'd know we were absoloutely in time & stuff!!

    Anyway, that's that for now.

    Toodlepip,

    Pete
