So, I am watching a certain ending of a show that America loves.....and what do I see? THE TV SPOT FOR JP3.

I am not even close to kidding, this movie looks great, its dark and scary with kick ass music!

The full trailer hits with Mummy Returns tomorrow as well as the offical site.

PS: When does the disc come out from Decca, I forgot.

Musicfromthemovies.com says JP3's score by Don Davis will be released by Decca on July 10, however, iclassics.com has no official listing yet. By mid-May, they might very well have info.

Decca gets my vote for best soundtrack releasing company this year. Look at their output, their releases- maybe not so much on their layout designs, and overall, you see a pretty good job done.

JP3 is probably my most anticipated score of the summer movie releases when I think about it. One the edge of my seat waiting for what Don Davis gives us... Hope it's a decent CD.

With JP3 advertising about to kick in, with the trailer being tacked onto prints of the mummy returns, the tv spots and the website going live, it should not be long before score info is announced.

What Don is doing is taking John Williams' score from the first film, and adapting it to fit this third film.

    Or so I've been told.

So I'm sure that the music will sounds very.... familiar...... but at least Don will (from what I hear) be contributing to bridging the Williams stuff with his own original music.

    We'll see....

The point is: Will he only use Williams themes for his own otherwise completely original score, or will he basically adapt the actual CUES from Williams' score(s) and only add a bit of bridging material himself. FSM's recent note suggested the latter, but it wasn't very clear if that is what they were trying to say.

I'd assume the former, or Williams would also be getting a credit on the JP3 posters/trailers...etc for themes, as he did on something like Superman II I'd think.

    Marian,

As I said, my understanding is that he's adapting Williams' score for the first film for this third film. That means he is NOT writing his own score using Williams' themes. Rather, he's molding Williams' score from the first film to FIT this third film - not an easy feat, mind you.

Certainly not easy, but also not as enjoyable on CD and probably not as functional in the film. As I said, FSM's original message seems to have expressed the same thought, i.e. that Davis will adapt large chunks of Williams' music. But the latest FSM Daily shows a couple of mails bitching about that, with the comment that there's nothing wrong with using Williams' THEMES. So, it seems to me that nobody knows for sure at the moment.

I am assuming John Williams wasn't interested in scoring the film? Otherwise, why not just ask Williams to score the film. As much as I like Don Davis' work, I am not feeling too enthusiastic about this score.

IMO, all such scores in the past have been nothing but rehashed and derivative of the originals. Let's just hope Davis proves me wrong.

New setpieces (water, flying) will be cool, and hopefully the movie will be better than the lackluster Lost World. Macy's mustache looks funny however.

And I thought it was because his buddy, Mr. Spielberg, wasn't directing it!

Seriously though, Williams might very well have recommended Davis to score the film. That said, he isn't necessarily the best at doing this. Didn't he himself say he did not like the score McNeely wrote for Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire? Another one he recommended from what I have heard.

In any case, this doesn't mean we will automatically get an good or bad score. I am hoping for the former though. Only time will tell.

Actually I believe Williams praised McNeely but felt Lucasfilm should have come to him or allowed him to have some input on how his music was used. I think Williams said it was a lack of tact on Lucasfilm's behalf.

Based on Robert Townson's wonderful liner notes for IN SESSION, it's pretty clear that Williams had NOTHING to do with McNeely's assignment to score "Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire".

Just saw a preview of Jurassic Park III on Film 2001 and its one of two sequels I'm personally looking forward to..the other being "The Mummy Returns" of course. I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed "Lost World"...any movie that follows in the footsteps of King Kong or Harryhausen's work etc I love..and I overlook any shortcomings that most people seem to revel in exposing. Films of this kind (also Dinosaur) are treasures when you think about how many teen movies, serial killer movies, gangster movies, drug movies etc there are around. Give me a great entertaining, visually enthralling movie in the genre of "fantasy" anytime. I want to be entertained at the cinema and not reminded how many depressing things are happening around in the real world..i.e. murder, drugs, war.
I noticed that Jurassic Park III is to be released in July in the U.K. Is the film being released around the world at the same time? We dont seem to be that far behind America with our releases these days...The Mummy Return's opens here next week. Are the releases of these blockbuster movies exceptions or is it because they're Summer films or are release dates between Europe and the USA getting closer together? I'm curious to know. Gae

    Dan,

Is it an alternate edit then? Because I thought Redrum is the track used in Mummy Returns teaser and the latest Final Fantasy trailer. They sound pretty different in comparison to what's heard in JP3. It's a neat bit of music.

But you have to keep in mind that he's just adapting Williams' score from the first film. So it WILL be a "verbatim" effort, more or less. Still, it's sounding like an interesting project - you can't just cut and paste the old score, so Davis does have a bit of work to do!

Okay folks. Just got back from the BMI Awards and talked with Don Davis about his score, and got the following HARD FINAL FACTS.

    1. They are recording the score already, and will be done by the end of the month.

    2. He is writing a completely ORIGINAL score, and uses Williams' themes throughout.

    3. The action scenes are reportedly going to "blow the Matrix away" in terms of music. (Don didn't say that - it was someone else at the session.)

    4. He already has recorded some "previs" music for THE MATRIX : RELOADED (aka THE MATRIX 2) and they will be shooting some scenes to his music.

Okie dokie? That should clear some things up.

You know, I liked the 30-second trailer that aired during the Survivor finale. I saw the full length trailer the other day in an excellent theater, and to be Frank (or Frank's troubled cousin Honest), nothing really interested me. Another Jurassic Park is a pretty dull prospect - the 30 second spot intrigued me a bit, but the full trailer? I feel like I've seen the movie now, and it was boring.

Maybe it's just me. It might turn out to be the biggest grossing movie of all time, but somehow I doubt it. No Steven Spielberg, no John Williams.....
