For those fans of John Ottman (INCOGNITO, CRUEL INTENTIONS, APT PUPIL) out there, you may have noticed his webpage (http://www.johnottman.com) has been updated lately, and he has scored the very, very low-budget movie PUMPKIN before really tackling the comedy BUBBLE BOY.Since I was interested in knowing whether or not there would be a CD release, considering PUMPKIN is a pretty small movie, I emailed Mister Ottman who was kind enough to answer me the following:
"Thanks for your interest already:) I'm just now mixing the little score for a prototype CD to give to Varese. i would assume they'd put it out. Most scores are not money makers - I've actualy never seen a dime! -- Its just good to get out there. I'll try to have a couple samples from it in a week or two. Te film is not out until fall, so it would be awhile before Varese would get it out there. Thanks again for listening:)
- John Ottman"
So, there you go. Samples should be up on the website in one to two weeks and there might be a CD release!!Kosh

Yes, I should be getting the advance CD from John this weekend, and then will get sound clips up ASAP. I will keep you all posted as to when I do.Interestingly enough, this is the first score since THE CABLE GUY that John recorded with a union orchestra, but the reuse fees would be very small - small enough so that a CD release (from Varese or whomever) wouldn't be prohibitively expensive. So we'll see!

Now isn't THAT a sad state of affairs? John Ottman states that he, as a film-music composer, hasn't seen a dime from his soundtrack sales, yet the orchestra itself will be paid if a CD is ever released.

Why is that? Is it that record labels, or movie studios don't pay the composers unless they reach a specific amount of sales?I am grateful that Ottman trys to get his music out there regardless.

That's the case with MANY composers, unfortunately.

Kosh - I run his website; hence if any sound clips are gonna go up, they've got to come to me first!
Yes, the whole thing about the union players making money of a soundtrack when the composer won't is very very silly. But, as they say, that's the way the cookie crumbles, and John just really really wants to get the music out there.

Dan, I know you run his website :) You're still a lucky bastard ;)And I think John's idea of getting most if not all of his music on CD and releasing it to the film music community is something every composer should think of doing. Anyway, I really enjoy John's music, so it's a good thing he always does everything in his power to get a CD release.

I can see John Ottman's website has been updated (the PUMPKIN page at least). Here's the new stuff (prepare to scream in utter joy):* The title is now "Francis Ford Coppola Presents PUMPKIN";
* The song that John adapted in his score has a name: "Sisters of Alpha Omega Pi";
* The music editor is Amanda Goodpaster;
* Vocals are by Tassa Hampton (don't you just love vocals in Ottman's scores? :);
* And... drum roll please...

Kosh,I should stress that we're expecting the score to be released this fall, when the movie comes out. But yes, as of now, it's Varese Sarabande.
No sound clips yet - I was supposed to get the CD yesterday from John but he put it on hold due to a mastering error. Don't want those RealAudio files to sound crappy! (he he)
Hope to have it later this week.

Well, it took a little longer than planned due to some technical CD issues, but I finally got the PUMPKIN score from John and now there are three juicy soundclips on the website for your listening pleasure.

At the director's of PUMPKIN's request, an additional "bonus" cue has been uploaded to the John Ottman website (link above).One quick note, though, is that the text saying that Varese will be releasing the soundtrack has been REMOVED. The reason for this should be apparent, without me getting into it further.
Also, information on the short film John wrote the music to last year, LONELY PLACE, is now up. (The score - believe it or not - is finally being recorded next week.)
Details, of course, are on the website.

Sean,How did things "change"? I DID say that "the text saying that Varese will be releasing the soundtrack has been REMOVED."
Hinting that Varese isn't releasing it.
And now, it's Citadel Records.

OK Peter, I've now seen this film. (He's been hounding us recently during the chat about it.) I can understand why people are buying the soundtrack...Besides the fact that it's priced right, the score is pretty enjoyable. There's plenty of pleasant music and a few memorable themes composed mostly for a small string ensemble. There was some music during and after the "fight" which was like a timewarp into the 1970s. When I say 1970s I mean ascending staccato brass blats sounding like some lame action TV music... I guess this music was just supposted pump up the 'humor' in the weirdness of the whole ordeal.
For the movie... I'm on the dislike side of the scale. If you ever need to watch this film, keep reminding yourself that it's supposedly a "comedy." It's the type of comedy that falls into the "that's not funny, you shouldn't have filmed this" category.
Christina Ricci and Brenda Blethyn (Pumpkin's Mother) both overact in a soap opera sort of way with the poor dialog that was handed to them. It could have been a good romance, drama, or comedy, but instead it tried all three in a half- (or third-) assed and painful way. If you want a good spoof/satire/comedy, go rent a Mel Brooks film instead.
Score good, movie bad.

o/~ never get online without it.... o/~
Do those things even look like a musical note anymore? In old old chat programs, them characters were musical notes. Eeeks. Exiting stage left....

Well, if the tilde was superscript and the o subscript, it just might have worked.I'll be waiting for Earthlink to advertise their new "Pop-up Blocking, Spam Eating, Hyperspeed-scrolling Super Service" soon on TV.

Just a heads up about music in Pumpkin: the "fight" music and the music for the tennis/sex montage was written by Sam Spence for NFL Films--you can find it on the fantastic CD "The Power and the Glory: Music for NFL Films."That said, I loved Ottman's score for this film and highly recommend the album--and even the movie! A nicely twisted effort with some truly hilarious moments.

Ah, I kinda figured that wasn't Ottman's stuff. Thanks for the info, Jeff.
