    New Today...

The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse - André Previn

I have yet to listen to it. But, I will say if anyone has yet to get a copy, you probably should do so quickly. My disc is numbered #4460/4500!

    Regards,
    Sean Robert Abbey

    TWO packages arrived today!

    First order:

    • Ultima IX: Ascension (George Oldziey, computer game score)
    • DVD: Hollow Man - Goldsmith iso score & commentary, plus I didn't find the movie so bad. Great sound as well.
    • DVD: Seven (Platinum Edition)

Second order, from the MM.com store:

    • Kings Row (Korngold, cond. Gerhardt) - Only know excerpts so far, but they were good, and it's Korngold, after all!
    • Sneakers (James Horner) - Always loved this one in the film (a favourite of mine); it has that special "space sound" I adore so much
    • On the Beach (Christopher Gordon) - If it's as good as Moby Dick, then it's a masterpiece
    • Sabrina (John Williams) - As far as I remember from watching the film some years ago, the score wasn't too special, but quite nice. Perhaps the "weakest" score in this list though - something that doesn't happen very often with a Williams score.
    • The Blue Max (Jerry Goldsmith) - Read countless raves on the boards, and liked the bits included in Silva's Goldsmith compilation
    • Oscar (Elmer Bernstein) - Only 4 tracks of score as it seems, but I loved the score in the film: Very witty variations on Rossini's Barber of Seville. The CD comes with one of those stupid seals on the RIGHT side of the jewel case that stick to the case when you open it, but will certainly ruin your CD player if ever a bit of them sticks to the disc

    Phew!

Kudos to Peter and the store staff: Perhaps it's just luck, but I had to pay customs duty for the first package, but NOT the one from the MM.com store!

NP: Sneakers (James Horner) - Starting with the score I know best

Yes! My MovieMusic order is here!

    • Ben Hur, Miklos Rozsa. (Yes, JJ) I haven't listened to it yet, but I can tell just by looking at the packaging that this may well be the very best 2CD set I will ever get.
    • Aliens The Deluxe Edition, James Horner. I haven't listened to this either, but it looks good (and will make a very nice replacement for that CDR of the boot).

Not from MovieMusic, but more new stuff nonetheless:

    • Plague And The Moonflower, Music By Richard Harvey. This CD is fantastic. I cannot descirbe it any other way. The music and vocals blend together so perfectly... Trust me, it's great.
    • Cowboy Bebop Session 1 DVD (Here I go with the Anime again...)

NP: Plague And The Moonflower, Music By Richard Harvey ***** (Track: Demon Dance)

Carlito's Way (Patrick Doyle). I've seen this in the local shop for years, but just took the plunge today. Great score. Some of the action highlights, like the oft-mentioned "Grand Central" have an almost Goldsmithian visceral feel in their ostinatos! And the bits which seem to bridge standard orchestral scoring with borderline big-band jazz (the first half of "Where's My Cheesecake?" for example, really made me sit up and take notice. Lovely string elegy too.

Patrick Doyle! I'm REALLY getting to like this man's work (about time too, no?).

Found a used MAGNOLIA (Jon Brion) the other day. Not as compelling on album as in the film, at least not to me and not yet; we'll see.

Decided I could finally afford to lay in all the Prometheus Goldsmith titles I'm missing, but thus far only THE CHALLENGE and BREAKOUT have arrived. CONTRACT ON CHERRY STREET was supposed to arrive in the same batch, but didn't. I wasn't charged for it, so that's something, but where the hell is it? I'll have to try again.

That was from Footlight Records, which wasn't carrying the Goldsmith/Prometheus POLICE STORY/MEDICAL STORY at all. That is pending, along with Joseph Harnell's promo of his INCREDIBLE HULK scores (a favorite of my youth), from Super Collector, from whom I've never bought before, and who sent me a very prompt pair of confirmation e-maisl, but have yet to actually deliver the discs as quickly as, thus far, Footlight and Tower and Intrada have managed to do.

I feel a bit guilty about never having bought from the K, but he doesn't accept American Express (and I do understand why), so that leaves me out entirely.

    NP: BREAKOUT (Jerry Goldsmith)

Graham, I am glad "Where's My Cheesecake?" was included on the score release. It's an unused bit of score I found surprisingly wasn't used. Time it up to the scene in the movie - it's really beautiful. In the end, a song won out.

Rocco, you aren't left out entirely. I am always able to work something out, if asked (I won't know otherwise, unless I catch a posting here). Money order? Everyone can do those. I'll even deduct the 75 cents it costs to send one.

Once the limited-edition and used CD store opens, there will be indicators in place that will make it clear there are other alternatives to V and MC.

FishChip, what you say about that bit in Carlito's Way is interesting. I haven't seen the film, so I didn't know that.

Marian, I've got Much Ado About Nothing on tape only (from a radio programme: they do whole scores quite a lot here on the radio), and I agree, it's splendid, so uplifting.

Other good Doyles: Frankenstein (for the love theme, and I KNOW what you're going to say now, Marian!) and Henry V.

I agree, and I got excited when I found a copy solely for the reason that I can gouge someone on Ebay down the road! I expected more from Shire, but the orchestral bits are nice. The synth stuff is pretty bad though, and I'm a big 'synth fan' anyway.
