Welcome back Elmer, after scoring only 4 pictures in the past 2 years, The legendary Bernstein has signed on to score the comedy Rat Race the It's A Mad, Mad World remake (instead of Jerry Goldsmith, sadly) and Martin Scorsese's epic crime drama, Gangs of New York starring Leonard DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. Sounds great to me doesn't it!

I'm definitely looking forward to hearing some new Bernstein, especially "Gangs of New York." However, I'm sick of hearing about remakes of classic films. But, I guess that's neither here nor there.

I agree. I'm fed up of hearing about remakes of classic films. They always ruin them!!Just look at "Psycho". Give me a bucket! I was insulted.

Okay, when and why did Goldsmith leave RAT RACE? This is getting to be a very disturbing trend with him.

I'm not sure what icon to use... I'm very distressed Goldsmith is off the project, but Bernstein has me excited. As to the remake, I never really considered IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD so much of a classic that it should remain untouched. Besides, RAT RACE sounds closer to a remake of THE GREAT RACE than IT'S A MAD...WORLD... in fact, it sounds even more like a film version of that old Hannah-Barbera cartoon series, "Wacky Races" (or was it "Crazy Races"?)

I hadn't really thought of EB as being gone. And while it's nice to see new Bernstein, I somehow doubt that Rat Race is worthy of either Goldsmith or Bernstein's talents. I'm no fan of the overly slapsticked MMW and a remake sounds like a complete waste of raw stock to me. Sad though that Scorsese seems the only one giving Elmer steady work these days. There are a fistful of films every year that could benefit from EB scores and he doesn't even get asked.NP: Ponette (Philippe Sarde)

I'm upset as you are, but since Goldsmith had to have an apendectomy it's understandable why wasn't scoring it. Lou you're right, Bernstein deserves to score a lot more films. But it's his choice to score films nowadays and as he said before, "the way the films today are, why should I be involved." You can't really blame him on that one. I loved his score for Keeping the Faith and I actually want more it if it's available. But I'm glad to see him scoring a Zucker film again.

What is Gans of New York about? Also, didn't Elmer compost for some baseball movie? Something like "Baseball in Black and White"? I think that was an alternate title. Great vocal piece at the end where it rains at the game.

Mustang, the only baseball movie Bernstein scored was The Babe..which was a bomb. The score wasn't all that great either and I wonder if Bernstein was really inspired to score it all. Ah well..at least we can say the score is better than the movie.

GANGS OF NEW YORK is Martin Scorsese's latest exploration of, well, what the title suggests. This time it takes place at turn-of-the-century (i.e. 19th to 20th) New York City, when the Irish gangs, the Italian gangs, the corrupt police forces and politicians et. alia., were all in combat.Feels like more of the same from Scorsese, to be honest, but I've no doubt it will LOOK spectacular.

I remember a movie called Fear Strikes Out (great pre-Psycho Anthony Perkins playing psycho), and I remember it was about baseball. AND it was scored by Elmer Bernstein. Nah, I must be remembering wrong. Only baseball movie he's ever scored was The Babe.Shaun

Hey, listen, I look at two new Elmer Bernstein scores coming up with great relish. While you may have mixed feelings about It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, you have to admit that Ernest Gold's score is wonderful, and that Bernstein excells at scoring this type of film.
...and Bernstein's music for The Gangs of New York I expect to be something of a new classic. I don't think that Hoodlum gets the respect it deserves...
...and The Grifters is genius...
